Learn How Heat Index Is Calculated

What Is Heat Index and Why It Matters

The heat index is a single number that tells you how hot it actually feels outside when you combine the air temperature with humidity. It's different from the regular temperature reading you see on a thermometer because humidity plays a major role in how your body experiences heat. When humidity is high, sweat—your body's natural cooling system—cannot evaporate as quickly from your skin. This makes the air feel hotter than what the thermometer shows.

The National Weather Service began using the heat index in 1979 as a way to better communicate heat danger to the public. Before this, people relied only on air temperature, which could be misleading. A temperature of 90°F on a dry day feels very different from 90°F with 70% humidity. In humid conditions, that same 90°F can feel like 106°F or higher, which significantly increases health risks.

Understanding heat index is important because extreme heat is one of the leading weather-related causes of death in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 1,200 people in the U.S. die from heat-related illness each year. The elderly, very young children, people with chronic illnesses, and those who work outdoors face the greatest risks during high heat index periods. Heat-related illnesses include heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke, which can develop quickly when the heat index reaches dangerous levels.

Different regions experience different heat index challenges. Southern states like Florida, Texas, and Louisiana regularly deal with high humidity combined with high temperatures, creating extreme heat index values. Even northern states can experience dangerous heat index conditions during summer months. Cities with lots of concrete and buildings—called urban heat islands—often have higher heat index values than surrounding rural areas because pavement and buildings absorb and radiate heat.

Practical Takeaway: Check the heat index forecast during summer months rather than relying on temperature alone, especially if you plan outdoor activities or work outside. A heat index of 103°F or higher indicates dangerous conditions where heat illness can develop quickly.

The Basic Formula Behind Heat Index Calculations

The heat index calculation uses a mathematical formula that combines air temperature and relative humidity into one number. The National Weather Service uses a complex regression equation that was developed by meteorologists to match how the human body actually feels in different temperature and humidity combinations. This formula is not a simple average; instead, it weights different factors based on how they affect human comfort and safety.

The primary formula used by the National Weather Service is: HI = c1 + c2*T + c3*RH + c4*T*RH + c5*T² + c6*RH² + c7*T²*RH + c8*T*RH² + c9*T²*RH². In this equation, HI represents the heat index, T is the air temperature in degrees Fahrenheit, RH is the relative humidity as a percentage, and c1 through c9 are mathematical constants that have been determined through research and observation.

For practical purposes, meteorologists and weather services use charts and computer programs to calculate heat index rather than doing this calculation by hand. However, understanding how the formula works helps explain why certain combinations of temperature and humidity create dangerous conditions. The formula shows that heat index is not linear—it doesn't increase at a constant rate. Instead, as both temperature and humidity increase, the heat index rises more dramatically at higher levels.

For example, when the temperature is 85°F with 40% humidity, the heat index is approximately 84°F—actually slightly lower than the actual temperature because low humidity allows sweat to evaporate efficiently. However, when the temperature is 95°F with 60% humidity, the heat index jumps to approximately 112°F. This 10-degree temperature increase resulted in an 28-degree heat index increase because of how humidity amplifies the effect. At even higher levels, such as 105°F with 80% humidity, the heat index can reach 142°F or higher.

Practical Takeaway: Heat index increases more rapidly at higher temperatures and humidity levels. A small change in either temperature or humidity when conditions are already hot and humid can create a significant jump in the heat index value, moving from caution to danger zones quickly.

How Temperature and Humidity Work Together

Temperature and humidity are the two inputs required for any heat index calculation. Temperature is straightforward—it's the measure of how fast air molecules are moving, reported in degrees Fahrenheit or Celsius. Humidity measures how much water vapor is present in the air compared to how much the air could hold at that temperature, expressed as relative humidity as a percentage. These two factors interact in ways that dramatically affect how hot the air feels to people and animals.

Relative humidity is a key part of understanding heat index because it directly affects how efficiently your body can cool itself. When air has low humidity, water evaporates quickly from skin and sweat, allowing your body to shed heat effectively. When humidity is high, the air is already saturated with water vapor, so evaporation slows dramatically. Your sweat remains on your skin longer without evaporating, and your body temperature rises as a result. This is why 85°F with 30% humidity feels quite comfortable, while 85°F with 90% humidity feels oppressive and potentially dangerous.

The relationship between these two factors is not balanced. Temperature changes have a larger effect on heat index than humidity changes in moderate conditions. However, as temperatures climb above 90°F, humidity becomes increasingly important. At very high temperatures, even a small increase in humidity can push the heat index into dangerous territory. This is why summer heat waves are most dangerous when they coincide with high humidity periods, which often occurs in continental climates during the warmest months.

Geographic location influences both temperature and humidity patterns. Coastal areas typically have higher humidity because of ocean water evaporation, while desert regions have very low humidity despite extremely high temperatures. The southeastern United States experiences both high temperatures and high humidity during summer, creating consistently high heat index values. The Great Plains experience high temperatures but lower humidity, resulting in lower heat index values despite similar air temperatures. Understanding these regional patterns helps predict when dangerous heat index conditions are likely to develop.

Practical Takeaway: When temperature exceeds 90°F, pay close attention to humidity forecasts. Even small changes in humidity can significantly alter the heat index. Plan outdoor activities for early morning or evening hours, drink water frequently, and watch for signs of heat exhaustion when heat index reaches 103°F or higher.

Reading Heat Index Charts and Tables

Heat index charts are visual tools created by the National Weather Service that show what the air feels like at different temperature and humidity combinations. These charts are arranged like a table with air temperature listed along one axis and relative humidity along the other axis. Where these two values meet in the chart shows the corresponding heat index. Most heat index charts show color coding to indicate different danger levels, making it easy to identify risky conditions at a glance.

The color coding typically follows these patterns: green indicates safe conditions where heat illness is unlikely; yellow indicates caution where prolonged exposure or heavy activity can cause heat exhaustion or cramps; orange indicates extreme caution where heat exhaustion and heat cramps are possible with prolonged exposure; red indicates danger where heat exhaustion and heat cramps are likely; and purple indicates extreme danger where heat stroke is possible. The National Weather Service issues heat advisories when heat index values are predicted to reach 103°F to 107°F, and excessive heat warnings when heat index values are expected to exceed 108°F.

To use a heat index chart, first locate the current or forecasted air temperature on the horizontal axis. Then find the relative humidity percentage on the vertical axis. Follow these lines across and down until they intersect, and read the number at that intersection point. That number is the heat index. For example, if the temperature is 95°F and relative humidity is 50%, you would find 95°F on the horizontal axis and 50% on the vertical axis. Where these meet, the heat index is approximately 109°F, which falls into the danger category.

Heat index charts are widely available from the National Weather Service website, weather.gov, and many local weather services. Some charts show heat index for a range of temperatures from 80°F to 130°F and humidity levels from 10% to 100%. Others display only the most common ranges. Smartphone weather apps often display the heat index directly, eliminating the need to consult a chart. However, understanding how to read a chart helps you verify information and understand the relationship between temperature and humidity in creating the
