Learn How Fizz Credit Card Works Today

What the Fizz Credit Card Is and How It Works

The Fizz Credit Card is a credit product offered by Fizz, a financial technology company that focuses on building credit for people who may have limited credit history or damaged credit scores. Unlike traditional credit cards from major banks, Fizz operates with a different model designed to help users establish or rebuild their credit profile over time.

The card functions as a standard credit card in many ways—you receive a card number, can make purchases, and receive a monthly statement showing your balance and payment due date. However, the structure differs because Fizz uses a secured credit card model for most customers. This means you provide a cash deposit that serves as collateral, and your credit limit is typically equal to or a percentage of that deposit amount.

The way Fizz reports to credit bureaus sets it apart from many other cards. Fizz reports your account activity to all three major credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. This reporting is crucial because it means your payment history, credit utilization, and account age all contribute to building your credit score. When you make on-time payments, keep your balance low relative to your limit, and maintain the account over time, these positive actions get reflected in your credit profile.

Fizz also offers a mobile app where you can monitor your account, make payments, and track your credit score progress. The app provides real-time notifications about purchases, payment due dates, and credit score changes. This transparency helps users understand the direct connection between their credit card behavior and their credit score movement.

Practical Takeaway: Understand that Fizz operates as a secured credit card requiring a cash deposit, with the primary purpose of reporting your payment behavior to credit bureaus to help build or rebuild your credit history.

Understanding the Deposit and Credit Limit Structure

When you open a Fizz account, you'll need to provide a security deposit. This deposit is held in a separate account and serves as collateral for your credit card. The deposit amount typically ranges from $200 to $2,500, though this can vary based on individual circumstances and company policies at any given time. Your initial credit limit is usually set at 100% of your deposit amount, meaning if you deposit $500, your credit limit will be $500.

The security deposit is not a fee—it's your money being held in reserve. It remains yours and earns a small amount of interest while being held. This structure exists because it reduces risk for the credit card company; if you don't pay your bill, they can use your deposit to cover the unpaid balance. This is why people with poor credit or no credit history can receive a credit card from Fizz when traditional banks might decline them.

Over time, as you demonstrate responsible credit behavior, Fizz may increase your credit limit. These increases can happen without requiring an additional deposit. For example, you might start with a $500 limit based on a $500 deposit, but after several months of on-time payments, Fizz might increase your limit to $600 or $700 without asking for more money. The company typically reviews accounts every few months for potential credit limit increases.

Some users may eventually graduate to an unsecured card through Fizz or another lender. An unsecured card doesn't require a security deposit, meaning your cash isn't tied up as collateral. However, graduating to an unsecured card depends on demonstrating consistent, responsible credit behavior over time—typically several months to over a year of perfect or near-perfect payment history.

The deposit does come with one important consideration: your money is not immediately available for spending or withdrawal. It's held separately from your credit line and can only be accessed after you close your account or graduate to an unsecured card. This means if you deposit $500, you have $500 in credit to use, but you don't have $500 in cash available to withdraw.

Practical Takeaway: Your security deposit determines your credit limit, remains your money earning interest, and stays separate from your spendable credit—plan your deposit amount based on realistic spending needs and what you can afford to have held as collateral.

Fees, Interest Rates, and Costs Associated with Fizz

Understanding the costs of the Fizz Credit Card is essential for making informed decisions about whether it fits your financial situation. Like most credit cards, Fizz charges an Annual Percentage Rate (APR) on any balance you carry from month to month. The APR for Fizz typically ranges from 16% to 28%, depending on various factors and current company rates. This is higher than what people with excellent credit might receive, but it's within the range for credit-building cards designed for people with limited or damaged credit history.

If you carry a $500 balance at 22% APR and make no payments, you would accrue approximately $91.67 in interest charges over the course of a year. This demonstrates why paying your full balance each month is important—it avoids interest charges entirely. When you pay your statement balance in full by the due date, no interest is charged. This is true for most credit cards and applies to Fizz as well.

Fizz may charge an annual fee, though this varies by card version and current offerings. If an annual fee applies, it typically ranges from $20 to $40 per year. Some versions of the card have no annual fee. It's important to check the specific terms for the card version you're considering, as this can affect the overall cost of maintaining the account.

Late payment fees apply if you miss your due date. A typical late fee ranges from $25 to $35 for the first late payment, and may increase for subsequent late payments. Beyond the fee itself, a late payment can significantly damage your credit score and makes it harder to achieve your goal of building credit. Even a payment that is 30 days late gets reported to credit bureaus and can remain on your credit report for seven years.

There are no foreign transaction fees, no cash advance fees mentioned in standard disclosures, and no fees for making payments or checking your account. Balance transfer fees typically don't apply because the primary purpose is credit building, not transferring existing balances. Overdraft fees don't apply since this is a credit card, not a checking account.

Practical Takeaway: Budget for potential APR (16%-28%), a possible annual fee ($20-$40), and late payment fees ($25-$35), while recognizing that paying your full statement balance monthly eliminates interest charges entirely.

How Fizz Reports to Credit Bureaus and Impacts Your Score

The primary value of the Fizz Credit Card lies in how it reports your account activity to credit reporting agencies. Fizz reports to all three major bureaus—Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion—on a monthly basis. This reporting creates a record of your credit behavior that factors into your credit score calculation. Understanding what gets reported helps explain why using Fizz correctly can help build your credit.

Your payment history makes up approximately 35% of your credit score calculation. When you make payments on time each month, Fizz reports this positive information to the bureaus. Over months and years, a consistent pattern of on-time payments significantly improves your credit profile. Conversely, late payments get reported and damage your score. A payment 30 days late, 60 days late, or 90+ days late all get reported and have increasingly negative impacts on your score.

Credit utilization—the percentage of your available credit that you're actually using—accounts for about 30% of your credit score. If your credit limit is $500 and you carry a $200 balance, your utilization is 40%. Credit scoring models generally favor utilization below 30%. With a Fizz card, keeping your balance well below your limit helps your credit score. For example, if you maintain a $150 balance on a $500 limit (30% utilization) rather than a $450 balance (90% utilization), your score will benefit.

Account age and mix of credit types also matter. Keeping your Fizz account open for an extended period demonstrates credit stability. Additionally, if you only have credit cards, adding other types of credit (like a car loan or installment plan) can help your score. However, the credit-building benefits of Fizz work best when combined with responsible financial behavior across all accounts.

Real-world example: Someone might start with a credit score in the 500-600 range due to limited history or past problems. After six months of using
