Learn How DMV Message Scams Work and Stay Safe

What Are DMV Message Scams and How They Target People

DMV message scams are fraudulent text messages, emails, or phone calls that pretend to come from your state's Department of Motor Vehicles. The scammers claim there is a problem with your driver's license, vehicle registration, or driving record that requires your immediate action. These messages often say things like "Your registration has expired" or "There's a violation on your license" or "Your payment failed — update your information now." The goal is to trick you into clicking a link, calling a number, or providing personal information.

According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), scam complaints related to government impersonation increased by over 40% between 2020 and 2023. DMV scams represent a significant portion of these reports. The reason scammers target DMV communications is that most people interact with the DMV at some point, making the messages seem believable. People receive thousands of these fraudulent messages every day across the United States.

The scammers behind these messages are often located outside the country, operating in organized rings. They use technology that allows them to send thousands of messages at low cost, and they only need a small percentage of people to fall for the scam to make money. Each person who responds gives them access to valuable information or direct payment.

DMV scams work because they create concern. When someone receives a message saying their registration is suspended or their license is at risk, they feel worried and want to fix the problem right away. This emotional response causes people to act without thinking carefully about whether the message is real. Scammers count on this panic to override your common sense.

Practical Takeaway: Real DMV communications come through official channels — your state's DMV website, official mail, or by phone when you call the DMV directly. Any unsolicited text or email claiming to be from the DMV should be treated with suspicion.

Common Tactics and Red Flags in DMV Scam Messages

DMV scammers use several predictable tactics to make their messages seem real. Understanding these patterns helps you recognize a scam when you see one. The most common tactic is creating false urgency by claiming your license or registration will be suspended, revoked, or that you will face fines or legal consequences. Messages often include phrases like "Act now to avoid penalties" or "Your license will be suspended in 24 hours."

Another common tactic is asking you to verify personal information. The message might say "Click here to verify your information" or "Confirm your Social Security number to update your account." Real government agencies never ask you to provide Social Security numbers, credit card information, or bank details through text, email, or a link in a message. This is a major red flag.

Scammers often include links in messages that look official but actually lead to fake websites designed to look exactly like the real DMV site. Once you land on these fake sites, anything you type in — including passwords, Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers, and credit card information — goes directly to the scammers. The fake sites are so well designed that many people don't realize they're not on the real DMV website until after they've already entered their information.

Here are other common red flags to watch for in DMV scam messages:

• Poor grammar or spelling mistakes (real government messages are carefully written)
• Generic greetings like "Dear Customer" instead of using your name
• Shortened URLs or links that don't match the official DMV website address
• Requests to pay fees through unusual methods like gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency
• Phone numbers that don't match your state's official DMV contact numbers
• Messages sent from email addresses that don't end in the state's official domain
• Claims that you won a refund or have unclaimed money from the DMV
• Threats of arrest, jail time, or license suspension without proper legal process

Some scammers use a tactic called "spoofing," where they make their message appear to come from your state's official DMV phone number or email address. This makes the message seem more trustworthy, but it's still fake. The technology exists to make scammers' communications appear to come from any number or address they want.

Practical Takeaway: Before responding to any DMV message, stop and verify it using an official source. Look up your state's DMV phone number on a government website, call them directly, and ask if the message you received is real. Real DMV staff can tell you within seconds whether the communication is legitimate.

What Information Scammers Are Trying to Steal

DMV scammers have clear targets in mind when they send out messages. Understanding what they want helps explain why these scams are so widespread and dangerous. The primary goal is to steal personally identifiable information — data that can be used to commit identity theft, open fraudulent accounts, or make unauthorized charges.

The most valuable pieces of information scammers seek from DMV scam victims include driver's license numbers, which contain your name, address, date of birth, and physical description. They also want Social Security numbers, which are the key to accessing credit, opening new accounts, and filing false tax returns. Credit card numbers and bank account information allow scammers to make immediate charges or drain accounts. Personal information like your full legal name, date of birth, address, and mother's maiden name are used to answer security questions and create new accounts or take over existing ones.

According to identity theft monitoring services, a single person's stolen identity information can be sold on the dark web for between $15 and $200, depending on how much information is included. A collection of complete personal data — including Social Security number, driver's license number, and financial account information — can sell for $500 or more. This means scammers can profit significantly from even a small number of successful victims.

Once scammers have your information, they may use it in several ways. They can open credit card accounts in your name and make charges. They can apply for loans or lines of credit without your knowledge. They can file fraudulent tax returns to steal refunds. They can create fake government benefit accounts. They can sell your information to other criminals. In some cases, they use the stolen identity information to create a synthetic identity — a combination of real and fake information used to commit further fraud.

Some DMV scammers are also looking for direct payment. They may claim you owe fines or registration fees and direct you to pay through the link in the message. People who fall for this lose money directly while also potentially giving up credit card or banking information.

The danger of this information theft extends far beyond the initial scam. Identity theft can affect your credit for years. You may be denied loans, credit cards, or housing because fraudulent accounts show up on your credit report. You may receive bills for accounts you never opened. You may have trouble getting employment because of background check issues. Fixing identity theft requires significant time and effort, often involving contacting credit agencies, banks, and government offices.

Practical Takeaway: Never share personal information like your Social Security number, driver's license number, financial account details, or passwords through text messages, email links, or calls you didn't initiate — especially when responding to unsolicited DMV messages.

Steps to Verify Whether a DMV Message Is Real

When you receive a message that claims to be from the DMV, you can take specific steps to determine if it's real before doing anything else. The most important rule is never to click links or call phone numbers in the message itself. Instead, use official sources to verify the communication.

The first step is to go directly to your state's official DMV website by typing the web address into your browser yourself. Look for a section that explains how the DMV communicates with residents. Most state DMV websites have information about scams and what genuine DMV communications look like. Some states publish lists of current scam messages that residents have reported. Reading these lists can help you immediately recognize if you've received a known scam.

The second step is to find your state's official DMV phone number on the website (not from the message you received) and call it directly. Tell the DMV staff member that you received a suspicious message and read it to them. They can tell you right away whether it's real. If there is actually a problem with your account, the staff member
