Learn How Costco Auto Buying Program Works

What Is the Costco Auto Buying Program and How It Works

The Costco Auto Buying Program is a service that connects Costco members with participating car dealerships to purchase new vehicles at negotiated prices. Unlike traditional car shopping where you negotiate individually with a dealer, this program involves Costco working with a network of dealerships across the country. Costco members can access this service through the Costco website or by contacting the program directly.

The program operates through a partnership between Costco and TrueCar, a third-party automotive marketplace. When you use the program, you're accessing pre-negotiated pricing that Costco has arranged with dealerships in your area. This means the prices you see through the program reflect discounts that Costco has already negotiated on behalf of its members. The dealership contact information and vehicle pricing information are provided directly to you as the shopper.

Members can browse available inventory, check pricing, and get information about vehicles from dealerships that participate in the program. The process involves creating a profile, searching for vehicles based on make and model, and reviewing pricing information. After finding a vehicle of interest, members can contact the dealership directly to arrange viewing and purchase details. The dealership handles the sales transaction, financing, and paperwork directly with the customer.

One important aspect of how the program works is transparency in pricing. Instead of relying on negotiations where dealers may quote different prices to different customers, members see pricing that reflects the dealer's pre-agreed rates with Costco. This can reduce the back-and-forth negotiation process that typically occurs in car buying. However, final pricing may still vary based on factors like trade-in value, current promotions, or specific vehicle configurations.

Practical Takeaway: The Costco Auto Buying Program functions as a connection tool between members and dealerships, not as a financing or direct sales service. Understanding that you'll ultimately work with the dealership for the actual purchase transaction helps set realistic expectations for how the process unfolds.

Membership Requirements and Program Access

To access the Costco Auto Buying Program, you must hold a valid Costco membership. Costco offers several membership tiers, including Gold Star (standard), Executive, and Business memberships. Each membership type provides access to the auto buying program. You do not need a specific membership level—any active Costco membership will grant you access to this service.

A standard Costco Gold Star membership costs $65 annually as of 2024, while an Executive membership costs $130 annually. Business memberships start at $55 annually. These membership fees cover access to all Costco services, including the Auto Buying Program, warehouse shopping, and other member benefits. If you already maintain a Costco membership for warehouse shopping, you automatically have access to the auto program without additional fees or special enrollment.

To use the program, visit the Costco website and navigate to the auto buying section. You'll log in with your membership account credentials. Some members access the program through the Costco mobile app as well. You can browse vehicle inventory and pricing information right away after logging in. Unlike some programs, there are no additional forms to fill out or separate approval processes—your Costco membership is your sole requirement.

The program is currently available in most states across the United States. However, availability may vary by region due to dealership participation differences and state regulations. If you're unsure whether the program operates in your area, you can contact Costco member services or check the program's website directly. Members can also call a dedicated phone line associated with the auto program to speak with a representative who can confirm availability in your location.

Practical Takeaway: Simply maintaining an active Costco membership gives you access to the Auto Buying Program. No special procedures, separate memberships, or additional payments are required beyond your regular Costco dues.

How to Find Vehicles and Review Pricing Information

Once you log into the Costco Auto Buying Program with your membership account, you can begin searching for vehicles. The search interface allows you to filter by several criteria including make, model, year, and body type (sedan, SUV, truck, etc.). You can also narrow results by price range or specific features. This search functionality helps you focus on vehicles that match your preferences and budget parameters.

After selecting your vehicle criteria, the program displays available inventory from participating dealerships in your area. Each vehicle listing includes information such as the model year, trim level, color, mileage (for used vehicles), and other relevant specifications. The pricing displayed represents the negotiated price that Costco members receive through the program. This price typically includes the dealer's markup and any manufacturer incentives that apply.

Pricing in the program may include different components worth understanding. The base price reflects the vehicle cost without add-ons. Some listings show additional information about warranties, extended coverage options, or dealer packages. Destination charges (the cost to transport the vehicle from the manufacturer to the dealership) are usually included in the quoted price. Taxes and registration fees are handled separately and vary by your state and location.

You can compare pricing across different dealerships for the same vehicle model. The program shows you which nearby dealerships have a particular vehicle and what each dealership's price is. This comparison feature helps you understand pricing variations. However, keep in mind that prices can change, and the actual price when you contact the dealership may differ slightly based on current inventory and promotions. Most dealerships ask that you confirm pricing by contacting them directly.

The program also provides information about vehicle availability. You can see whether a vehicle is in stock at a dealership or if it's available for order. In-stock vehicles may have photos and detailed specifications, while order vehicles show what the vehicle will be configured with. This distinction matters because in-stock vehicles can often be driven home sooner than ordered vehicles, which may take weeks or months to arrive.

Practical Takeaway: Use the search filters to narrow down to vehicles matching your needs, compare prices across dealerships, and note whether vehicles are in stock or available for order. Always confirm final pricing directly with the dealership before making a purchase commitment.

The Dealership Contact and Negotiation Process

After you've identified a vehicle through the Costco Auto Buying Program, the next step is contacting the dealership. Each vehicle listing includes contact information for the specific dealership where that vehicle is located. You can call, email, or visit the dealership in person to express your interest. When you contact the dealership, mention that you're a Costco member using the Auto Buying Program—this alerts them that you're coming through the negotiated pricing arrangement.

The dealership representative will confirm the vehicle's availability and the pricing you saw in the program. They may ask questions about your preferences, such as whether you want to finance or pay cash, if you have a trade-in vehicle, and what features matter most to you. This conversation helps the dealership understand your needs and prepare for your visit. It's worth noting that dealership staff are typically trained to recognize Costco Auto Program customers and understand the program's framework.

One advantage of the Costco program is that much of the price negotiation has already occurred. The price you saw in the program represents the dealership's pre-agreed discount with Costco. This means you typically have less back-and-forth negotiation than in traditional car buying. However, some discussion may still occur around specific factors like trade-in valuation, financing terms, or add-on packages. The dealership may also mention current manufacturer promotions or incentives that could apply to your purchase.

Many dealerships participating in the program have dedicated staff or departments handling Costco member sales. These representatives often have streamlined processes for completing the paperwork and finalizing transactions for program members. This can result in a faster purchase process compared to traditional dealership negotiations. Some Costco members report that the program reduces the typical several-hour negotiation process to a shorter, more straightforward transaction.

If you're unsure about pricing or terms the dealership presents, you're not obligated to purchase. You can visit multiple dealerships through the program to compare their vehicles, staff, facilities, and customer service approaches. Shopping around helps you make an informed decision about which dealership and vehicle combination best meets your needs.

Practical Takeaway: When contacting a dealership, mention you're using the Costco Auto Buying Program so they understand the pricing arrangement. Use the pre-negotiated prices as your starting point, and feel free to compare options across multiple dealerships before committing to a purchase.
