Learn How Chewy's Pet Subscription Program Works

Understanding Chewy's Autoship Subscription Program

Chewy's Autoship program is a subscription service that delivers pet supplies to your home on a schedule you choose. Rather than visiting a store or placing individual orders each time, you can set up recurring deliveries of items your pets need regularly. This guide explains how the program works and what you should know about using it.

The Autoship program covers a wide range of pet products including food, treats, litter, toys, medications, and accessories. You can subscribe to almost any item available on Chewy's website. The program works by allowing you to select a delivery frequency that matches your pet's needs—whether that's every two weeks, monthly, or another interval. Once you set up an Autoship order, Chewy processes and ships it automatically according to your chosen schedule.

Many pet owners use Autoship for items their pets consume regularly. For example, if your dog eats a 30-pound bag of kibble every month, you can set up monthly deliveries so you never run out. Similarly, cat owners might subscribe to litter deliveries, and owners of multiple pets might have several different Autoship orders running at once.

One important aspect of the program is that you maintain control over your orders. You can modify, pause, or cancel Autoship subscriptions at any time without penalties or additional fees. This flexibility means you can adjust your deliveries based on changes in your pet's needs, dietary preferences, or your household situation.

Practical Takeaway: Autoship works best for products you know your pets use consistently. Think about which items you buy most frequently and whether setting them on a regular delivery schedule would reduce shopping trips and ensure you have supplies on hand.

How Autoship Discounts and Pricing Work

Chewy offers discounts on many items when you subscribe through their Autoship program. The discount percentage varies by product, typically ranging from 5% to 20% off the regular price. Some products have higher discount rates, while others may have smaller reductions or no discount at all. The discount applies automatically when you place an Autoship order, and you see the reduced price before completing your purchase.

The way pricing works on Autoship differs slightly from one-time purchases. When you select a product and choose an Autoship frequency, the website displays both the regular price and the Autoship price side by side. This allows you to compare costs directly. The discount you receive stays the same every time your order ships, so you'll pay consistent pricing for that item across multiple deliveries.

It's worth noting that prices on individual products can change over time. While your Autoship discount percentage typically remains stable, the base price of items may increase or decrease based on market conditions, manufacturer pricing, or sales. Chewy notifies customers when upcoming Autoship orders will have price changes. You receive this notification before the order ships, giving you the chance to modify or cancel that specific shipment if you prefer.

Some items on Chewy qualify for what they call "Subscribe and Save" pricing, which is separate from regular Autoship pricing. Additionally, Chewy frequently runs promotions where certain products receive temporary additional discounts or special offers. These promotional discounts may apply on top of your standard Autoship discount, making these periods particularly cost-effective for stocking up on certain items.

Different delivery frequencies can sometimes affect your discount level. For example, scheduling more frequent deliveries might qualify for a slightly higher discount in some cases. When setting up your Autoship order, you can experiment with different frequency options to see how it impacts your total savings.

Practical Takeaway: Compare the Autoship price against the regular price for products you use regularly. If the savings are 10% or more and you use the item consistently, Autoship can reduce your overall pet supply expenses significantly over a year.

Setting Up and Managing Your Autoship Orders

Creating an Autoship order on Chewy's website or mobile app follows a straightforward process. After you find a product you want to subscribe to, you look for the Autoship option on the product page. This usually appears as a button or checkbox that says "Subscribe and Save" or "Autoship." Clicking this option changes the pricing to reflect the Autoship discount and allows you to select your preferred delivery frequency.

When setting up your delivery schedule, you choose from various intervals depending on the product. Common options include every 2 weeks, every 4 weeks (monthly), every 6 weeks, every 8 weeks, and every 12 weeks. Some products may have additional frequency options. The frequency you select should align with how quickly your pet consumes that item. If your cat goes through one bag of litter every three weeks, you might choose a 4-week delivery to allow for slight variations in usage.

Once you establish an Autoship order, it appears in a dedicated section of your Chewy account called "My Autoships" or similar. This dashboard shows all your active subscriptions, upcoming delivery dates, and product details. From this section, you can view when each order will ship next, make changes to quantities or products, adjust delivery frequencies, skip upcoming shipments, or cancel subscriptions entirely.

Making changes to Autoship orders is straightforward. If you need more or less of a product, you can modify the quantity for that order. If your pet's needs change or you want to try a different formula or brand, you can substitute one product for another on an existing Autoship schedule. You can also temporarily pause individual Autoship orders if you have a surplus of a product, then resume them when you're ready for more deliveries.

Skipping a delivery is useful when you have extra supplies on hand. When you skip a shipment, that Autoship order simply doesn't process on its scheduled date. The next scheduled delivery after your skip date will proceed as normal. You can skip orders through your account dashboard, and you can manage this even after an order has been placed but before it ships.

Practical Takeaway: Review your Autoship orders monthly to ensure they still match your pet's consumption rate. As pets age or their dietary needs change, adjust your frequencies and quantities so deliveries remain helpful rather than creating excess inventory.

Shipping, Delivery, and Timing Considerations

Chewy offers various shipping options for Autoship orders, similar to their regular orders. Standard shipping is included at no additional cost for orders above a minimum amount, typically $35 or $49 depending on your location and membership status. For faster delivery, customers can pay for expedited shipping options, though many customers find the standard shipping timeframe works well for regularly scheduled items.

Delivery timeframes depend on your location and the shipping method selected. Standard shipping typically delivers within 5-7 business days for most areas, though some remote locations may take longer. Chewy's website shows estimated delivery dates when you set up or review your Autoship orders. Understanding the typical shipping time for your area helps you choose a delivery frequency that prevents running out of supplies between shipments.

You can adjust your Autoship schedule to align with when you typically want to receive shipments. For example, if you prefer products to arrive early in the week or on a specific date range, you can modify the frequency or timing of your orders to attempt this. Chewy allows you to change your next delivery date within certain parameters, giving you some control over when shipments arrive.

It's useful to consider your storage space when setting up frequencies. If you live in an apartment with limited storage, you might prefer more frequent smaller shipments rather than large bulk orders. Conversely, if you have plenty of storage and want fewer deliveries, you can choose longer intervals between shipments. This flexibility means Autoship can work for various living situations and storage constraints.

Tracking information is provided for all Autoship shipments, allowing you to monitor when your order ships and when it will arrive. You receive notifications when orders process and when they're out for delivery. If you'll be away from home, you can manage your Autoship schedule to avoid having packages sit outside, or you can arrange for them to be held at a delivery location.

Practical Takeaway: Map out your consumption rates and choose Autoship frequencies that result in deliveries arriving just as you're running low on supplies. This timing prevents accumulating excess inventory while ensuring you never face unexpected shortages of essential pet items.
