Learn How Avis Preferred Membership Works

Understanding Avis Preferred Membership Basics

Avis Preferred Membership is a loyalty program offered by Avis Budget Group that rewards frequent car renters with various perks and conveniences. This membership program operates as a free enrollment option for customers who rent vehicles regularly from Avis locations. The program tracks rental activity and provides members with benefits that accumulate based on their rental history and frequency.

The membership structure works through a point-based system where renters earn rewards with each rental transaction. Members receive a membership number upon enrollment, which they provide at the time of rental to ensure their activity is tracked toward rewards. The program operates at both airport and off-airport Avis locations throughout North America, as well as at select international locations through Avis partner companies.

The core concept behind Preferred Membership involves recognizing customer loyalty through tangible benefits rather than simply offering discounts on individual rentals. Avis tracks membership metrics including the number of rentals completed, total rental days accumulated, and membership tenure. These factors influence the level of benefits a member receives as they progress through different membership tiers within the program.

Membership can be managed through multiple channels, including the Avis website, mobile application, and by contacting Avis directly. Members can monitor their account status, view accumulated points or rewards, and update personal information through these platforms. The program integrates with Avis's broader business model, which also includes partnerships with credit card companies and other travel-related services.

Practical Takeaway: Understanding that Avis Preferred Membership is a free, points-based program helps renters recognize the potential value of enrolling before their first rental. Knowing how to access and manage membership accounts through multiple channels ensures members can track their progress and take full advantage of available benefits.

How Enrollment and Membership Tiers Work

Joining Avis Preferred Membership involves a straightforward enrollment process with no membership fees. Prospective members can enroll through the Avis website, via the mobile app, or in person at an Avis rental location. The enrollment process requires basic information including name, contact details, driver's license information, and email address. Once enrolled, members receive a membership number that they use for all future rentals to track their activity and accumulate rewards.

Avis Preferred Membership operates on a tiered system that recognizes increasing levels of rental frequency. The tier structure typically includes several levels, with members progressing based on the number of completed rentals or total rental days accumulated during a membership year. As members move through tiers, the benefits available to them increase, providing stronger incentives for continued loyalty to the Avis brand.

The entry-level tier represents the base membership status available to all enrolled members. Even at this level, members receive certain benefits such as expedited rental processes, the option to skip the rental counter and proceed directly to their vehicle, and access to member-only rates. The progression to higher tiers requires meeting specific rental thresholds, which vary depending on Avis's current program structure. As of recent program information, members typically need to complete multiple rentals annually to reach higher tiers.

Each tier increase brings additional perks that enhance the rental experience. Higher-tier members may receive priority vehicle selection, late return allowances, and additional rewards toward future rentals. The program structure incentivizes members to continue renting through Avis rather than competing companies, as the accumulating benefits become increasingly valuable at higher membership levels. Members can monitor their progress toward the next tier through their online account dashboard or by contacting Avis directly.

Practical Takeaway: Enrollment in Avis Preferred Membership is free and available to anyone with a valid driver's license. Understanding the tier structure helps renters anticipate what benefits they may receive as they accumulate rental activity with Avis. Tracking tier progress through account management tools allows members to see how close they are to earning higher-level benefits.

Earning and Redeeming Rewards Points

Members accumulate rewards through every rental transaction completed with Avis while enrolled in Preferred Membership. The rewards system typically awards points based on rental transaction value, with members earning a set number of points per dollar spent on eligible rentals. Additional promotional opportunities periodically offer bonus points for specific types of rentals, such as bookings made during promotional periods or rentals of particular vehicle classes.

The earning structure varies based on membership tier level. Higher-tier members typically earn points at a faster rate than entry-level members, meaning more frequent renters gain accelerated rewards accumulation. For example, a member at a higher tier might earn one point per dollar spent, while an entry-level member earns a lower point value per rental dollar. This structure directly correlates rental frequency with reward value, creating a mathematical incentive for continued use of Avis services.

Reward points can be redeemed toward various benefits, with the primary option typically involving points redemption for free or discounted rental days. Members accumulate points until reaching a specific threshold, at which point they can convert those points into a voucher or discount code. The redemption process occurs through the member's online account or by contacting Avis directly. Some members report that the point threshold for redemption ranges, requiring accumulation of several hundred to over a thousand points depending on the redemption target.

Beyond rental discounts, some promotional periods offer alternative redemption options such as upgrades to higher vehicle classes, rental day extensions, or partnership benefits through affiliated companies. Avis occasionally announces limited-time bonus point opportunities where members can earn double or triple points on specific rental transactions. These promotional periods typically align with travel seasons or special occasions, encouraging members to book rentals during those timeframes to maximize point accumulation.

Points within the Avis Preferred program do not expire for inactive members in most circumstances, though Avis reserves the right to modify program terms. Members should regularly review their account statements to track point accumulation and monitor redemption opportunities. Understanding the relationship between membership tier and point-earning rates helps members calculate anticipated rewards value based on their expected rental frequency.

Practical Takeaway: Every dollar spent on Avis rentals generates rewards points that accumulate toward redemption benefits. Members who understand their earning rate at their current tier can estimate how many rentals are needed to reach redemption thresholds. Monitoring promotional periods allows strategic booking to maximize point accumulation more rapidly.

Membership Benefits and Convenience Features

Avis Preferred Members receive several convenience features designed to streamline the rental experience and reduce time spent at rental counters. One of the most notable benefits involves the ability to skip the traditional rental counter process entirely at participating locations. Known as the "Express" service at many locations, this feature allows members to proceed directly to their assigned vehicle using a mobile app or printed documentation, significantly reducing rental time.

Members gain access to preferred rates on rental transactions, which typically represent savings compared to standard walk-up rates. These member-only rates are often lower than prices quoted to non-members for the same rental period and vehicle class. The rate advantage encourages consistent use of Avis for all rental needs, as the cumulative savings across multiple rentals can be substantial. Some members report annual savings of hundreds of dollars through member-exclusive pricing alone.

The rental flexibility benefits available to higher-tier members include extended late return windows, allowing members to return vehicles beyond the standard return time without additional charges. This benefit proves particularly valuable for business travelers or those with unpredictable schedules. Some tier levels also include one complimentary vehicle upgrade per year, allowing members to rent a higher vehicle class at the price of their original reservation.

Avis Preferred Members receive priority vehicle selection at many locations, meaning they can choose from available inventory before non-member customers. This benefit is particularly valuable during peak travel seasons when specific vehicle types may be in limited supply. Members can often request specific vehicle features or colors during the reservation process, with priority given to fulfilling member requests when available.

Communication benefits include dedicated customer service channels for members, allowing them to reach Avis support through preferred contact methods. Members can update rental preferences in their online profiles, specifying preferences such as smoking or non-smoking vehicles, preferred pick-up locations, and vehicle type preferences. These preferences are noted in the rental system and used when available to customize each member's rental experience.

Practical Takeaway: Beyond point accumulation, Avis Preferred Members receive immediate practical benefits including faster rental processes and member-exclusive rates. Understanding these convenience features helps members recognize the value of membership even before accumulating enough points for redemption. Higher-tier members should familiarize themselves with tier-specific benefits
