Learn How Autism May Affect Your SNAP Benefits

Understanding SNAP and Autism Diagnosis

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a federal benefit that helps low-income individuals and families purchase food. It works by providing monthly funds loaded onto an electronic benefit transfer (EBT) card that can be used at grocery stores and farmers' markets. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, approximately 42 million Americans receive SNAP benefits each month.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental condition that affects communication, social interaction, and behavior. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that about 1 in 36 children and 1 in 45 adults have autism. Autism exists on a spectrum, meaning people experience different support needs and challenges. Some autistic individuals work full-time jobs with no support, while others require substantial assistance with daily activities.

The connection between autism and SNAP involves understanding how an autism diagnosis might affect a household's income level, work capacity, or family structure—all factors that can influence SNAP eligibility. Someone newly diagnosed with autism might experience changes in employment, or a family member's diagnosis might change household circumstances. Additionally, families supporting autistic members may have increased expenses for specialized services, though SNAP itself does not account for these costs when determining benefit amounts.

SNAP has no diagnosis requirements. You do not need an autism diagnosis to receive SNAP, nor does having an autism diagnosis automatically provide SNAP benefits. Instead, SNAP looks primarily at household income and household size. However, understanding how autism might change your financial situation or work capacity helps explain why your household circumstances might shift.

Practical takeaway: Keep records of any diagnoses in your household and how they affect employment or household income, as these factors directly impact SNAP considerations.

How Autism Affects Employment and Income Qualification

One of the most common ways autism affects SNAP is through its impact on employment. According to research from the American Autism Association, only about 32% of autistic adults are employed, compared to 87% of the general adult population. Even autistic individuals who do work may earn less than peers without autism, work part-time when they need full-time income, or experience job loss related to autism-related challenges.

SNAP eligibility is based partly on gross household income. For example, in 2024, a household of three can earn up to approximately $2,871 per month and still qualify for SNAP in most states. When a household member receives an autism diagnosis and that person is currently employed, the diagnosis itself does not change income. However, the person might leave employment to seek diagnosis, pursue different work, or take time off for therapy and evaluation appointments. This temporary income reduction could move a household into SNAP qualification range.

Conversely, some autistic people receive support or accommodations that increase earning potential. For instance, job coaching services or workplace accommodations might help someone maintain or secure employment. This could increase household income above SNAP thresholds. Additionally, some autistic adults begin working after receiving services and support, which also increases household income.

Self-employment presents another income consideration. Some autistic individuals pursue self-employment or freelance work because it offers greater control over environment and schedule. Self-employment income is counted differently than wage income, and self-employed individuals must report business expenses. This can affect how income is calculated for SNAP purposes.

It is important to note that experiencing autism does not automatically reduce work capacity. Many autistic individuals work successfully and earn adequate incomes. The relationship between autism and employment is individual and depends on the specific person's support needs, available accommodations, and the nature of available work.

Practical takeaway: If your household's income changes due to employment adjustments related to an autism diagnosis—whether someone stops working, starts working, or changes jobs—document these changes, as they directly affect SNAP qualification.

Disability Benefits and SNAP Interaction

Some autistic individuals receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). These are separate programs from SNAP, but they can interact with SNAP in important ways. SSI is for individuals with disabilities who have limited income and resources. SSDI is for people who have worked and paid into Social Security but can no longer work due to disability. Not all autistic people receive these benefits—many do not meet the requirements or do not pursue them.

If someone in your household receives SSI or SSDI, their benefit amount is counted as income for SNAP purposes. However, SSI and SNAP have different resource limits. SSI recipients can have up to $2,000 in countable resources; SNAP resource limits vary by state but typically allow significantly more. Some households receive both SSI and SNAP simultaneously because even combined, their income falls below SNAP thresholds.

The Social Security Administration states that approximately 200,000 autistic adults receive SSI benefits, though exact numbers are not separated from the broader disability population. Many autistic children receive SSI if their families have limited income, and this continues into adulthood if requirements are met.

A household member receiving disability benefits—whether related to autism or another condition—may also have work incentives available. These are programs that allow benefit recipients to work and earn money without losing all their benefits immediately. Work incentives include plans to achieve self-support (PASS), impairment-related work expenses (IRWE), and continuation of Medicare coverage. These programs can affect both disability benefits and SNAP, so understanding how they work is important if someone in your household receives disability benefits.

Families supporting disabled autistic adults sometimes make difficult decisions about whether to pursue disability benefits or encourage work. There is no single right answer—it depends on the person's preferences, capabilities, and available resources. From an SNAP perspective, what matters is the actual household income, regardless of its source.

Practical takeaway: If anyone in your household receives SSI, SSDI, or other disability benefits, report all sources of income accurately when reviewing SNAP, as benefit amounts count toward household income.

Medical Expenses and SNAP Benefits

Families of autistic individuals often face significant medical and support costs. These can include therapy (speech therapy, occupational therapy, behavioral therapy), medical appointments, medications, specialized educational services, and equipment. According to research published in JAMA Pediatrics, the lifetime cost of supporting an autistic person ranges from approximately $1.4 million to $2.4 million per person, depending on support needs and local resources.

It is important to understand that SNAP does not account for medical expenses when determining benefit amounts. SNAP eligibility and benefit size are based on gross income and household size, not on expenses. Even if a family spends $3,000 per month on autism-related therapy and medical care, this does not increase SNAP benefits or change eligibility thresholds. The expenses do not reduce "countable income" for SNAP purposes.

However, some medical costs may affect household finances in ways that do impact SNAP. For example, if someone leaves employment to attend medical appointments or pursue diagnosis, that employment loss reduces household income, which could improve SNAP qualification. Additionally, if an autistic person attends a day program or specialized school, the household may save money on childcare that would have been needed otherwise, potentially affecting overall family finances.

Some states have programs that help pay for autism-related services. These might include state autism insurance mandates, Medicaid-covered therapies, or state-funded programs. The availability and scope of these vary considerably by state. Understanding what services your state covers can help families manage costs, but these programs are separate from SNAP.

Families sometimes wonder whether medical debt or high medical expenses make them "more eligible" for SNAP. This is a misunderstanding of how SNAP works. Debt and expenses do not affect SNAP calculation. What matters is current income versus household size and some specific deductions that SNAP allows (such as child support payments or some elderly/disabled household member expenses).

Practical takeaway: Do not assume that having high medical bills helps with SNAP qualification. Focus instead on accurate reporting of actual household income, which is what SNAP uses to make decisions.

Household Composition Changes Related to Autism Support

When someone in a household receives an autism diagnosis, household composition sometimes changes in ways that affect SNAP. These changes might include moving in with family members for support, having a caregiver move into the home, or an adult child with autism remaining in a parent's household longer than typical. Each of these changes affects
