Learn Anime Eye Drawing Techniques Step by Step

Understanding the Basic Structure of Anime Eyes

Anime eyes are one of the most recognizable features of the art style, and understanding their fundamental structure is the first step toward drawing them well. Unlike realistic human eyes, anime eyes are exaggerated and stylized, with larger irises, more defined shapes, and expressive qualities that communicate emotion instantly. The basic anatomy of an anime eye consists of several key components: the eye shape or outline, the iris, the pupil, the highlights or shine marks, and the surrounding eyelids and lashes.

The eye shape in anime typically appears larger and more almond-shaped compared to Western cartoon styles. The outer edge of the eye often slants upward or downward depending on the character's expression and personality. A character with eyes that slant upward at the outer corners often appears cheerful or mischievous, while downward-slanting eyes can suggest a more serious or melancholic personality. The vertical placement of eyes on the face matters significantly—anime characters typically have eyes positioned higher on the head than in realistic proportions, which contributes to their youthful appearance.

The iris in anime eyes occupies a much larger portion of the visible eye compared to real human eyes. Where a realistic eye might show an iris taking up about 30-40% of the visible eye area, anime irises frequently fill 50-70% or more. This exaggeration is one of the primary reasons anime characters appear so expressive and appealing. The iris is typically drawn as a perfect circle, though some styles elongate it slightly. The pupil sits at the center and is usually drawn as a solid black circle, though some artists leave a small white dot in the pupil to suggest light reflection.

The highlight marks, often called "shine" or "gloss," are crucial to making anime eyes feel alive and three-dimensional. Most anime eyes feature two or more white highlight shapes on the iris—typically one larger oval or teardrop shape and one or more smaller circular highlights. These marks follow the direction of light and help establish where the light source is coming from in your illustration. The highlights also serve to make the eyes appear wet and glossy, which contributes to the appeal of anime characters.

Practical takeaway: Start by lightly sketching the basic eye shape as an almond or oval, then draw a large circle for the iris. Add a smaller solid circle for the pupil, and practice placing highlight marks using simple shapes like ovals and circles. This foundation will help you understand how all the other details layer on top of basic forms.

Mastering Different Anime Eye Shapes and Styles

Anime eyes come in numerous variations, and different eye shapes convey different personality traits and emotions. Learning to draw multiple eye styles will expand your artistic range and allow you to create diverse characters. The most common anime eye shapes include the round eye, the upturned eye, the downturned eye, the hooded eye, and the large doe eye. Each style requires slightly different proportions and construction methods.

Round eyes are among the most fundamental anime eye styles and are frequently seen on characters meant to appear innocent, childlike, or endearing. These eyes are characterized by a nearly circular or slightly oval outline with a large iris that fills most of the visible eye area. The outer corners of round eyes are typically squared off or only slightly angled, giving them their characteristic appearance. This style works well for younger characters or characters with gentle personalities. To draw round eyes, begin with a circle for the overall eye shape, then draw the iris circle inside it, leaving small crescents of white (called sclera) on either side.

Upturned eyes slant upward at the outer corners, creating a cheerful, youthful, or sometimes mischievous appearance. This eye shape is popular for protagonist characters and characters meant to seem approachable. The inner corner of the eye sits lower than the outer corner, creating the distinctive upward tilt. When drawing upturned eyes, angle your eye shape so the outer corner is higher than the inner corner. The iris and pupil follow this same angled orientation. Many famous anime protagonists feature upturned eyes because this shape naturally conveys optimism and energy.

Downturned eyes angle downward at the outer corners, suggesting a more serious, mature, or sometimes sad expression. These eyes are frequently used for antagonists, serious characters, or older individuals. The outer corner sits lower than the inner corner, and the overall eye shape follows this downward slant. Downturned eyes can also appear cool or mysterious, making them popular for stoic or reserved characters. The iris and highlights should follow the same angled direction as the eye outline for consistency.

Hooded eyes feature an additional eyelid line or fold across the upper eyelid, partially covering the eye and creating a sleepy, seductive, or cool appearance. This style adds an extra line across the upper portion of the eye where the eyelid appears to fold. Hooded eyes are frequently used to suggest maturity, exhaustion, or a laid-back personality. To draw hooded eyes, sketch your basic eye shape, then add an upper eyelid line that curves across the top, partially obscuring the iris. This creates the illusion of a heavy or drooping eyelid.

Large doe eyes are exaggerated round eyes with particularly enormous irises that fill almost the entire eye space, leaving minimal white space. These eyes appear innocent, vulnerable, or childlike and are commonly used for young female characters. The iris in doe eyes often takes up 70-80% or more of the visible eye area. To achieve this style, draw your basic eye outline normally but make the iris circle significantly larger, reducing the visible white areas considerably.

Practical takeaway: Sketch the same character's face multiple times using different eye shapes—round, upturned, downturned, and hooded—to see how dramatically the eye shape affects the character's apparent personality and age. This practice helps you understand which eye style suits different character concepts.

Creating Expression Through Eyelids, Eyebrows, and Surrounding Features

While the iris and pupil form the core of the eye, the surrounding features—particularly the upper and lower eyelids, eyebrows, and lashes—are equally important for creating expression and emotion. In anime, these features are often exaggerated and stylized to make emotions immediately readable to the viewer. The upper eyelid line is one of the most important lines in the eye because it defines the eye's shape and contributes significantly to the character's expression.

The upper eyelid line in anime is typically drawn as a curved or angular line that forms the top edge of the eye. This line can be thin and delicate or thick and bold depending on the art style and character design. For characters with a softer appearance, the upper eyelid line curves smoothly; for more angular or dramatic characters, it may feature sharper angles or points. The thickness of this line also matters—thicker lines make eyes appear bolder and more dramatic, while thinner lines create a more delicate or feminine appearance. Importantly, the upper eyelid often covers a small portion of the iris, which is more realistic than showing the entire iris unobstructed.

The lower eyelid line is typically thinner than the upper lid and may be just a simple curved line or sometimes omitted entirely in simpler art styles. The lower lid generally follows the shape of the iris but sits lower, creating the eye's bottom boundary. In many anime styles, the lower eyelid is barely visible or only suggested with a thin line, creating a sense of openness that makes the eyes feel larger and more expressive. However, some styles do emphasize the lower lash line, which creates a different visual effect.

Eyelashes in anime are highly stylized and often exaggerated far beyond realistic proportions. Typical anime characters feature prominent upper lashes drawn as angular lines radiating outward from the upper eyelid. These lashes are usually drawn as individual lines rather than individual lashes, with perhaps three to seven lashes per eye depending on the style. Lower lashes are sometimes included but are typically much less prominent than upper lashes. The style and direction of lashes contribute to the character's expression—lashes pointing upward and outward create an open, innocent appearance, while lashes pointing in different directions can create a more wild or uncontrolled effect.

Eyebrows play a crucial role in anime character expression and should be considered as part of the overall eye design. The position, angle, and shape of eyebrows dramatically alter how an expression reads. Eyebrows positioned high on the forehead suggest surprise or intensity. Eyebrows angled downward toward the center create an angry or determined expression. Eyebrows angled upward toward the center suggest sadness or worry.
