Understanding American Sign Language: What It Is and Why People Learn It

American Sign Language (ASL) is a natural language used primarily by Deaf and hard of hearing communities in the United States and parts of Canada. Unlike spoken English, ASL uses hand shapes, positions, movements, and facial expressions to communicate meaning. It is not a word-for-word translation of English—it has its own grammar, syntax, and cultural context. ASL has been recognized as a legitimate language since the 1960s, when linguist William Stokoe published groundbreaking research showing that sign language met all the criteria of a natural human language.

Approximately 250,000 to 500,000 people in the United States use ASL as their primary language. However, learning ASL is not limited to those who are Deaf or hard of hearing. Many hearing people learn ASL for various reasons: to communicate with family members, to work in education or healthcare settings, to participate in Deaf community events, or simply out of personal interest in linguistics and cultural exchange. Some employers actively recruit ASL users for interpreter positions, customer service roles, and educational positions, creating genuine career opportunities for fluent signers.

One important distinction to understand is that ASL is not universal. Other countries have their own sign languages—British Sign Language (BSL), French Sign Language (LSF), and Japanese Sign Language (JSL) are entirely different languages with different grammar and vocabulary. Even within the United States, regional variations and different signing styles exist, similar to regional accents in spoken English.

Learning ASL offers cognitive benefits as well. Research from the University of Texas at Austin found that bilingual individuals who use both ASL and English show enhanced cognitive flexibility and problem-solving abilities. The visual-spatial nature of sign language engages different parts of the brain than spoken language, potentially strengthening spatial reasoning and memory.

Practical Takeaway: Before starting your learning journey, consider your personal motivation. Understanding why you want to learn ASL—whether for communication, career, family connection, or cultural interest—will help you choose the right learning approach and stay motivated through the learning process.

Self-Paced Learning Options: Videos, Apps, and Online Courses

Self-paced learning gives you flexibility to study ASL on your own schedule, which works well for people with busy lives, varied work hours, or geographic limitations. Several platforms offer structured ASL instruction that you can follow at your own speed. Lifeprint.com, created by Dr. Bill Vicars, is a well-known free resource featuring hundreds of video lessons organized by topic and skill level. The site includes vocabulary, grammar explanations, and practice activities. Deaf instructors demonstrate signs clearly against neutral backgrounds, making it easy to follow along and practice.

Apps like ASL Play, Sign Language 101, and ASL Coach provide interactive learning experiences. Many of these apps use video demonstrations, interactive quizzes, and progress tracking. Prices vary—some offer free versions with limited content, while others charge one-time fees or subscriptions ranging from $5 to $15 per month. According to a 2023 survey by the National Association of the Deaf, app-based learning is increasingly popular among beginners, with 62% of respondents using at least one app during their first year of study.

YouTube has become a significant resource for ASL learners. Channels like "ASL That" and "Learn ASL with Asl That" feature Deaf instructors teaching vocabulary and grammar in lesson formats. The advantage of YouTube is that it's free and searchable—if you want to learn how to sign a specific word or concept, you can often find multiple videos demonstrating it. However, YouTube requires more self-direction since content is not organized into a structured curriculum.

Online platforms like Coursera and Udemy offer complete ASL courses ranging from beginner to intermediate levels. These typically cost between $10 and $50 and combine video instruction with quizzes and assignments. Some universities, including the University of Iowa and Washington State University, offer free or low-cost online ASL courses through their websites. These university courses often include grammar explanations written by academic linguists, providing deeper context about how ASL works as a language system.

One consideration with self-paced video learning is the lack of immediate feedback on your signing. When you practice alone, you cannot receive correction on hand shape, movement, or facial expression. Many learners address this by recording themselves and comparing their signing to the instructional videos, or by eventually supplementing video learning with in-person practice or tutoring.

Practical Takeaway: Start with free resources like Lifeprint or YouTube to explore whether ASL interests you before investing in paid courses. If you find yourself engaged and motivated after several weeks, consider investing in a structured app or online course that matches your learning style—whether you prefer video lessons, interactive quizzes, or downloadable materials.

Building Vocabulary Through Systematic Study and Regular Practice

ASL vocabulary includes single signs that represent words or concepts, but it also uses classifier constructions, directional verbs, and spatial grammar to convey more complex meaning. A single ASL sign might translate to a full English phrase. For example, the sign "HAVE-ENOUGH" communicates the full concept in one signed unit, whereas English requires multiple words. This means that building ASL vocabulary involves learning not just hand shapes and movements, but also understanding how signs function within the grammar of the language.

Beginning learners typically start with high-frequency, everyday vocabulary: numbers, colors, family members, common activities, and basic questions. The Gallaudet University Dictionary of American Sign Language includes over 5,000 signs, but fluent conversational ASL requires knowledge of roughly 1,000 to 3,000 signs, similar to vocabulary requirements for conversational fluency in spoken languages. Most self-paced learners focus on mastering the most common signs first, building progressively toward more specialized or technical vocabulary.

Effective self-paced vocabulary building involves several strategies. Spaced repetition—reviewing vocabulary at increasing intervals—is particularly effective for sign language. You might study a new set of 20 signs on day one, review them on day three, then again on day seven. Apps like Anki can be adapted for ASL by pairing written English words with video links to sign demonstrations. This method, based on cognitive science research, improves long-term retention compared to massed practice (studying the same material repeatedly in short bursts).

Many learners create flashcards or keep a vocabulary journal. Rather than writing translations, some learners describe the hand shape, location, and movement of each sign in writing—this forces them to observe and process signing more carefully. Others video record themselves signing each new word and review these recordings to track their progress and identify signs they forget easily.

Context-based learning is valuable as well. Rather than memorizing signs in isolation, learning vocabulary within conversations or scenarios helps you understand how signs are actually used. For instance, learning signs for family members alongside signs for "work," "visit," and "love" allows you to create simple sentences and understand how these concepts relate to each other in real communication.

A realistic expectation: most self-paced learners reach the ability to understand and produce basic signed conversations within 100-200 hours of study. According to research from Gallaudet University, this equates to approximately 3-4 months of consistent study at 1-2 hours per day. However, reaching conversational fluency—understanding rapid, natural signing and responding appropriately in varied contexts—typically requires 300-600 hours of study and regular practice with other signers.

Practical Takeaway: Create a vocabulary study schedule that includes learning new signs, reviewing old signs using spaced repetition, and practicing signs in realistic contexts. Recording yourself signing new vocabulary and reviewing these recordings helps identify weak areas and builds confidence in your own production.

Understanding ASL Grammar: The Foundation for Real Communication

ASL grammar differs fundamentally from English grammar. While English uses word order (subject-verb-object) to convey meaning, ASL uses space, body position, and movement. This is called "spatial grammar" or "classifier constructions." For example, in English you might say, "The cat jumped onto the table." In ASL, you would establish locations in space for the cat and table, then use a classifier handshape (representing the cat) to show the jumping action moving from one location to the other. The spatial relationship conveys the grammatical relationship.
