Learn About Visiting Inmates at LA County Facilities

Understanding LA County Jail Facilities and Their Visitation Programs

Los Angeles County operates one of the largest jail systems in the United States, housing approximately 15,000 to 17,000 inmates across multiple facilities. The main facilities include Men's Central Jail, Inmate Reception Center, Century Regional Detention Facility for women, Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic, and several other locations throughout the county. Each facility operates under specific visitation policies and procedures designed to maintain security while allowing inmates to maintain family and community connections.

The LA County Sheriff's Department oversees all visitation programs and establishes rules that visitors must follow. These rules exist to protect the safety of inmates, staff, and visitors. Understanding which facility houses a specific inmate is the first step in planning a visit. The county provides a searchable inmate locator system online where you can find out where someone is housed, their booking number, and other basic information about their case status.

Visitation serves an important role in the criminal justice system. Research shows that inmates who maintain family connections while detained experience better behavior and lower recidivism rates after release. Regular visits can help inmates stay connected to their support systems and provide family members with important updates about case progress and the inmate's wellbeing.

Different facilities may have slightly different visitation schedules and procedures, so it's important to verify information for the specific location where your inmate is housed. Some facilities offer video visitation, in-person visits, or phone calls depending on the inmate's housing unit and custody level. Housing unit assignments can change, which may affect visitation options available to you.

Practical takeaway: Before making any plans, locate the inmate using the LA County Sheriff's Department online inmate locator system at lasd.org. Write down their booking number, housing location, and custody classification, as you'll need this information for all subsequent steps.

Video Visitation as an Alternative to In-Person Visits

LA County jail facilities have increasingly adopted video visitation technology in recent years. Video visitation allows visitors to connect with inmates through secure video calls from designated locations or, in some cases, from their own homes. This option has become especially common since many facilities face space constraints for traditional visiting areas, and video visitation reduces the security risks associated with in-person contact.

To use video visitation services, you typically need to create an account with the video visitation provider that contracts with LA County. The main video visitation vendors serving LA County facilities include platforms like CorrLinks and similar services. These platforms charge fees for video calls, typically ranging from three to fifteen dollars per fifteen-minute session, depending on the vendor and facility. Some facilities offer limited free video visitation time to low-income visitors, though this varies by location.

The process generally works as follows: you create an account using your name, address, and email; you add the inmate to your contact list using their booking number; you fund your account through credit card, debit card, or bank account transfer; you schedule a video call during available times; the inmate must also accept you as an approved visitor; and then you can connect for your scheduled visit. Video calls typically occur in a designated visitation room at the facility where the inmate is housed, and a staff member monitors the call.

Video visitation offers several practical advantages. It eliminates travel time and expenses associated with visiting a facility. It provides consistency since many video visitation services operate twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. It removes geographic barriers for family members who live far from LA County. However, video visitation cannot replace the importance of in-person contact for many inmates and families, and the ongoing costs can become significant for families with limited means.

Practical takeaway: Research the specific video visitation vendor used by the facility where your inmate is housed. Set up an account ahead of time, fund it with a small amount to test the system, and schedule your first call during a time when the inmate is likely to be available and not involved in work duties or programs.

In-Person Visitation: Hours, Rules, and What to Expect

In-person visitation at LA County facilities typically occurs during specific times that vary by facility and housing unit. Most facilities offer visitation ranging from one to four times per week, with weekend hours being more common than weekday hours. Men's Central Jail, for example, may have visitation on certain weekday afternoons and weekend mornings, while Century Regional Detention Facility for women may have different schedules. You must verify the specific hours for the facility and housing unit where your inmate is located, as these can change.

Before arriving for an in-person visit, you must generally be on the inmate's approved visitor list. To get on this list, the inmate must submit a visitation request form from within the facility, requesting you as a visitor. This process takes time, sometimes one to two weeks depending on facility workload. Once approved, you should receive notification. You can also call the facility's visitor information line to confirm your visitor status before traveling.

On the day of your visit, you should plan to arrive early. Facilities typically have a check-in process that may take thirty minutes or more. Bring valid government-issued photo identification. You will pass through a security screening similar to airport security. Metal detectors, pat-downs, and bag searches are standard. Facilities maintain strict rules about what visitors can bring into the facility:

• No weapons of any kind, including firearms, knives, or pepper spray
• No drugs or alcohol
• No recording devices, cameras, or phones (in visitation areas)
• No large bags or backpacks
• No clothing with offensive language or gang-related images
• No excessive jewelry or cash
• Typically only a clear plastic bag with permitted items like a small amount of money and a photo ID

During the visit itself, physical contact varies by facility and inmate custody level. Some facilities permit a brief embrace at the beginning and end of a visit, while others prohibit all physical contact. Conversations may be monitored. Visits typically last between thirty minutes and two hours depending on the facility. When your time is up, facility staff will notify you, and you'll need to exit promptly.

Practical takeaway: Call the facility's visitor information line at least one week before your planned visit to confirm: visitation hours for that specific housing unit, your visitor status, what items you can bring, and any dress code restrictions. Arrive at least one hour early to allow time for security screening.

Phone Calls and Mail Communication with Inmates

For many families, phone calls provide the most frequent contact with incarcerated loved ones. LA County jail inmates can typically make collect calls to outside numbers, and they can receive calls during designated phone times. The inmate initiates collect calls from phones located in their housing unit, usually during evening or weekend hours. The person receiving the call will hear an automated message asking them to accept charges, and will be charged for the call duration.

Phone call rates for inmate calls can be expensive. Collect calls from county jails typically cost between four and fifteen dollars for the first minute and two to three dollars for each additional minute, though rates vary. This means a fifteen-minute call could cost twenty to thirty dollars. Some facilities offer calling plans where you can prepay for phone services at slightly reduced rates. Additionally, some advocacy organizations work to reduce phone call costs, so rates may change over time.

Mail is another important communication method. Inmates can send and receive letters, and this is generally free for the inmate sending mail. Letters to inmates are typically screened by staff for contraband or security concerns, which can add a delay of several days to delivery. Some items like photographs or legal documents may have restrictions. Mail sent to an inmate should include their full name, booking number, facility name, and address. Incorrect addressing can result in returned or delayed mail.

Some facilities have implemented email-like systems where visitors can send messages that are printed and delivered to inmates. These services may charge a small fee per message. These systems can be faster than traditional mail, sometimes delivering messages within one or two days rather than a week or more. Video messages and photos can sometimes be sent through these systems, providing more connection than text alone.

Communication serves important purposes beyond emotional connection. Regular contact helps inmates stay aware of court dates, case progress, and family matters. It can reduce behavioral problems and provide stability during an unstable time. For families, communication provides reassurance about the inmate's
