Learn About Varo Bank and How It Works

What Varo Bank Is and Its Basic Structure

Varo Bank is a financial institution that operates primarily online and through mobile apps rather than through physical branch locations. Founded in 2015, Varo received its national bank charter in 2020, making it one of the first fintech companies to achieve this status in the United States. This charter means that Varo operates under federal banking regulations and oversight from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), similar to traditional banks.

The bank's structure differs from conventional banks in several key ways. Rather than requiring customers to visit a physical location to open accounts or conduct business, Varo conducts all operations through digital channels. Customers can open accounts through the Varo mobile app or website, deposit checks using mobile deposit features, and manage their money from anywhere with an internet connection. This digital-first approach allows Varo to operate with lower overhead costs than traditional brick-and-mortar banks.

As a federally chartered bank, Varo maintains deposit insurance through the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). This means that deposits held in Varo accounts receive the same protection as deposits in traditional banks—up to $250,000 per depositor, per account type. This protection applies to checking and savings accounts held individually, meaning customers' money is protected in the event of bank failure.

Varo's business model centers on serving customers who may find traditional banking inconvenient or who prefer managing finances through their smartphones. The bank generates revenue through various services rather than through branch operations, allowing it to offer certain account features without monthly maintenance fees.

Practical Takeaway: Understanding that Varo is a federally chartered bank with FDIC insurance means your deposits receive the same legal protections as money in traditional banks, despite the entirely digital operation model.

How Varo Checking and Savings Accounts Function

Varo offers several account types designed to meet different banking needs. The primary account products include a checking account and a savings account, which customers can open and manage entirely through their mobile device or computer. Unlike some online banks that offer only basic checking, Varo provides features that many customers expect from their primary banking relationship.

The Varo checking account comes with features such as a debit card, the ability to write checks, and access to a network of ATMs. The debit card functions like cards from traditional banks, allowing customers to make purchases at stores and online, withdraw cash from ATMs, and receive cash back at retailers. The check-writing capability means customers can pay bills, contractors, or other payees who may not accept electronic payments. The bank provides customers with a routing number and account number for setting up direct deposit or making electronic transfers.

Varo's savings account operates with variable interest rates, meaning the rate of interest paid on savings balances may change over time. The bank advertises that savings accounts may earn interest, though the specific rate varies based on account type and current market conditions. Customers can transfer money between their Varo checking and savings accounts through the mobile app without fees or waiting periods. This flexibility allows customers to move money as needed while potentially earning interest on funds held in the savings account.

Both account types feature no monthly maintenance fees, no minimum balance requirements, and no overdraft fees. This fee structure differs from many traditional banks that charge monthly fees, require minimum balances, or charge substantial overdraft fees when accounts go negative. The absence of these fees means customers maintain lower costs for basic banking services.

The account opening process requires providing personal information, verifying identity, and funding the account with an initial deposit. Customers typically complete this process through the app in a matter of minutes, without needing to visit a location or speak with a representative.

Practical Takeaway: Varo checking and savings accounts combine basic banking features with fee structures that may reduce the total cost of managing a primary bank account, particularly for customers who would otherwise pay monthly maintenance fees elsewhere.

Mobile App Features and Daily Banking Operations

The Varo mobile app serves as the primary interface for all banking activities. Available for both iOS and Android devices, the app functions as a complete banking platform where customers can view account balances, transfer money, pay bills, deposit checks, and manage their debit card. The app's design emphasizes simplicity, with the main dashboard displaying current balance and recent transactions immediately upon opening.

Mobile check deposit represents one of the app's core features. Customers can photograph the front and back of a check using their phone's camera and submit the image through the app for deposit. The bank typically processes these deposits within one to two business days. This feature eliminates the need to visit an ATM or physical location to deposit checks, which represents a significant convenience factor for customers who receive paper checks.

The bill pay feature within the app allows customers to schedule payments to various payees directly from their Varo account. Customers can set up recurring payments for regular expenses such as rent, utilities, or loan payments. The app also supports one-time payments to individuals or businesses. Bill payments typically process within one to three business days, though the customer controls when the payment sends.

Person-to-person transfers through the app enable customers to send money to other Varo customers or, in many cases, to external bank accounts. These transfers may be instantaneous or may take one to three business days depending on the transfer type. The app tracks all transactions, providing a searchable history that customers can review at any time.

The card management features within the app allow customers to lock or unlock their debit card, set spending limits, receive notifications for transactions, and view detailed information about their card. Customers can also order replacement cards or request expedited card delivery through the app. Fraud monitoring features alert customers to suspicious activity, and the app provides tools to report unauthorized transactions.

Push notifications keep customers informed about account activity. They can customize notification settings to receive alerts for specific transaction types, balance changes, or security events. This real-time information helps customers monitor their accounts and detect problems quickly.

Practical Takeaway: The Varo mobile app consolidates banking functions into a single platform, allowing you to complete most banking tasks without visiting a physical location or calling customer service, though more complex issues may require contacting the bank's support team.

Varo's Fee Structure and Cost Considerations

Understanding Varo's fee structure helps you assess whether the bank's services align with your financial needs and spending patterns. Varo positions itself as a low-cost banking option by eliminating several fees that traditional banks commonly charge. However, certain fees do apply in specific circumstances.

The bank charges no monthly account maintenance fees for either checking or savings accounts. This contrasts with many traditional banks that impose monthly fees ranging from $5 to $15 or more. Varo also does not charge overdraft fees when accounts go negative, though the bank may decline transactions that would overdraft the account. Some accounts feature overdraft protection features that may prevent transactions from declining, but these operate through transfers rather than overdraft fees.

ATM access represents an area where costs depend on the specific ATM used. Varo provides fee-free access to a network of surcharge-free ATMs through the Allpoint network, which includes thousands of ATM locations across the country. However, using ATMs outside this network may result in surcharges charged by the ATM operator. Customers can locate fee-free ATMs through the Varo app or the Allpoint website to minimize these costs.

Certain services may carry fees in specific situations. For example, international wire transfers may involve fees, wire transfers to accounts outside the United States typically cost money, and certain expedited services may have associated costs. Returned check fees or fees for stop payments may apply, though these represent less common transactions for most customers. Customers should review the current fee schedule on Varo's website or within the app to understand fees that might apply to their specific banking needs.

The bank does not charge for basic bill pay, person-to-person transfers between Varo customers, or mobile check deposit. These core services operate without associated costs, which can represent significant savings for customers who regularly use these features at banks that charge for each transaction.

Debit card replacement fees may apply if you lose your card and request a replacement, though standard replacement cards typically ship at no charge while expedited delivery may cost money. This fee applies only if you specifically request faster service than the standard delivery timeframe.

Practical Takeaway: Varo's primary cost advantage comes from eliminating monthly maintenance fees and overdraft fees, but you should review the complete fee schedule to
