Learn About U.S. Passport Fees and Spending

Understanding U.S. Passport Types and Associated Costs

The U.S. Department of State issues several types of passports, each serving different travel purposes and carrying different fees. The most common type is the passport book, a traditional booklet used for international travel by air, sea, or land. Adults typically receive a standard passport book valid for 10 years, while children under 16 receive passports valid for 5 years. As of 2024, the execution fee for a passport book is $130 for adults and $100 for children, with an additional $35 application fee for first-time applicants or those renewing by mail.

Another option is the passport card, a wallet-sized document valid for land and sea travel to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda, but not for air travel. The passport card costs less than a book—$50 for adults and $35 for children, with the same $35 application fee for first-time applicants. Some people carry both documents because they can be used together to extend the validity of a renewal application under certain circumstances.

The U.S. also issues official passports for government employees traveling on official business and diplomatic passports for diplomats and their families. These are not available to the general public. For most U.S. citizens, the choice comes down to the traditional passport book or the card, depending on travel plans and budget.

Practical takeaway: Before starting the passport process, determine whether you need a book or card based on your travel destination. If you travel by air internationally, you must have a passport book. If your travel is limited to land and sea borders with nearby countries, a card might cost less overall.

Breaking Down First-Time Passport Expenses

Obtaining your first U.S. passport involves multiple costs beyond the base execution fee. Understanding each component helps you budget accurately. The application fee of $35 applies only to first-time applicants and those renewing passports in person. This fee is separate from the execution fee and cannot be avoided if you're obtaining a passport for the first time.

For a first-time adult passport book, you'll pay $130 (execution) plus $35 (application) for a total of $165. If you choose a passport card instead, the cost is $50 (execution) plus $35 (application) for a total of $85. Some people apply for both at the same time, which costs $180 total—$130 for the book execution, $50 for the card execution, and $35 for the application fee (charged only once).

Additional costs may arise depending on how you apply. If you apply in person at a passport acceptance facility, such as a post office or library, there may be an acceptance agent fee of $0 to $35 depending on the location. If you use an expedited service, which reduces processing time from the standard 6-9 weeks to 2-3 weeks, you'll pay an extra $60. For a rush service that takes 1-2 weeks, you'll pay an extra $60 plus the cost of overnight shipping for delivery.

You'll also need supporting documents. A certified birth certificate costs $5 to $25 depending on your state. A state identification card or driver's license is free if you already have one. A passport photo, required for all applications, costs $10 to $20 at most pharmacies and photo shops, though some people use passport photo apps and print at home for less.

Practical takeaway: For a first-time adult passport book with standard processing, budget approximately $165 for fees, plus $15-$25 for certified documents, plus $10-$20 for photos. This brings a basic first-time passport to roughly $190-$210 total.

Renewal Fees and How They Differ From First-Time Costs

Renewing a passport costs less than obtaining one for the first time because you don't pay the application fee again. If you renew by mail, which is the most affordable option for eligible passports, you pay only the execution fee with no application fee. For a passport book renewal, the execution fee is $130, bringing the total to $130 for a 10-year renewal. For a passport card renewal, the execution fee is $50, making it $50 total.

However, not all passports qualify for mail renewal. Your passport must be undamaged, unexpired or expired no more than 5 years, issued when you were 16 or older, and issued in your current name (or you can show legal documentation of a name change). If your passport was issued before you turned 16, or if it's damaged or lost, you must apply in person. In-person renewals cost the same as first-time applications: $130 plus $35 for a book, or $50 plus $35 for a card.

Expedited renewal adds $60 to the execution fee. For example, an expedited passport book renewal by mail costs $130 plus $60, totaling $190. Rush service, available only for in-person applications, costs $60 plus overnight shipping fees. The standard processing time for mail renewal is 6-9 weeks. With expediting, expect 2-3 weeks. With rush service, expect 1-2 weeks.

Some people renew early to extend their passport's validity without losing travel time. While this doesn't change the fee structure, it does mean paying renewal fees before the 10-year validity period ends. This strategy is sometimes used when planning extended international travel or when passport validity is required for visa applications.

Practical takeaway: If your passport qualifies for mail renewal, plan for approximately $130 for a book or $50 for a card. If you need faster processing, add $60 for expediting. If you must apply in person, add the $35 application fee to your execution fee.

Additional Fees and Hidden Costs to Consider

Beyond the standard execution and application fees, several other costs can add to your passport expenses. Expedited service is one of the most common add-ons, costing $60 for both mail and in-person applications. This is an optional fee that reduces standard processing time from 6-9 weeks to 2-3 weeks. Many travelers choose expediting when applying close to their travel date, even though it increases overall cost.

Overnight shipping fees apply when you request rush service or when expedited passports are returned to you. These fees vary by location and shipping method but typically range from $18 to $40. Some passport service centers offer overnight delivery options, while others require you to use a specific carrier like FedEx or UPS. If you're using rush service, overnight shipping both ways means paying twice.

Acceptance agent fees charged at passport acceptance facilities vary widely. Most post offices and libraries charge between $0 and $35 to accept your application, though the federal government does not require this fee. Some locations include it as part of a service package, while others charge it separately. Before applying in person, contact your local acceptance facility to ask about their specific fees.

Document-related costs extend beyond birth certificates. If you need to change your name on your passport following marriage, divorce, or legal name change, you must provide court documentation or marriage/divorce certificates. If you don't have a certified copy, you'll need to order one from the appropriate government office, typically costing $5 to $25. If your current name appears differently on various documents, you may need multiple certified copies to prove your identity during the application.

Replacement passports for lost or stolen documents cost the same as new passports plus any expediting fees. The loss of a passport doesn't reduce the fee—you pay the full amount again. Travel insurance that covers passport replacement is available from some travel agencies and costs $10 to $50 depending on coverage limits and trip duration.

Practical takeaway: Review all potential fees before applying. Contact your local acceptance facility about their specific charges, clarify whether you need expedited service based on your travel timeline, and confirm what documents you already have to avoid paying for duplicates.

Payment Methods and Where to Pay Passport Fees

The U.S. Department of State accepts several payment methods for passport fees, but the methods available depend on where and how you apply. For in-person applications at passport acceptance facilities like post offices and libraries, you can typically pay by check, money order, or credit card. Some locations accept debit cards and digital payment methods like Apple Pay or Google Pay, though this varies. The facility provides a
