Learn About Unlocking Your Credit Freeze

Understanding What a Credit Freeze Is and How It Works

A credit freeze is a security tool that restricts access to your credit report. When you place a freeze on your credit file, credit bureaus will not release your report to potential creditors, lenders, or other businesses without your permission. This makes it much harder for identity thieves to open new accounts or take out loans in your name, because lenders typically cannot complete the lending process without reviewing your credit report.

The three major credit reporting bureaus in the United States—Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion—maintain credit reports and credit scores. These bureaus collect information about your borrowing and payment history. When you place a freeze with one bureau, that freeze only applies to that bureau's records. To protect yourself fully, you need to place freezes with all three bureaus separately.

Credit freezes have been available for many years, but the process became standardized and free for all consumers in 2018. Before that, many states charged fees for freezes, and the rules varied by location. Now, federal law requires all credit bureaus to offer free credit freezes to anyone who requests one, regardless of whether they have been victims of identity theft.

It is important to understand that a credit freeze does not affect your existing credit accounts. If you already have credit cards, loans, or other active credit lines, a freeze will not interfere with those accounts. You can still use your current credit cards, make payments, and access your existing credit. The freeze only prevents new credit from being opened without your permission.

A credit freeze is different from a credit lock, which is a similar service offered by some credit bureaus. While freezes are free and regulated by law, credit locks are often fee-based services. Both tools serve the same general purpose: preventing unauthorized access to your credit report.

Practical Takeaway: A credit freeze restricts access to your credit report at each of the three major bureaus, making it harder for identity thieves to open accounts in your name. You must place separate freezes with Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion to have complete protection. Freezes do not affect your existing accounts or your ability to use current credit.

When and Why You Might Want to Freeze Your Credit

There are several situations in which placing a credit freeze may be a reasonable decision. The most common reason is if you suspect or know that your personal information has been compromised. If you receive a notice that your data was part of a data breach, or if you notice unauthorized charges on your accounts, a credit freeze can prevent criminals from using your information to open new credit accounts.

Identity theft is a serious problem in the United States. According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), there were over 2.6 million reported cases of identity theft in 2022. The most common form was credit card fraud, followed by loan or lease fraud. If your Social Security number, address, or other personal identifying information falls into the wrong hands, a credit freeze provides a layer of protection by making it harder for someone to open accounts using your identity.

You might also consider a freeze if you are generally concerned about identity theft risk, even if you have not experienced a breach. People who have experienced identity theft in the past often choose to maintain ongoing freezes as a precaution. Similarly, if you rarely apply for new credit and do not need lenders to access your report, a freeze poses no disadvantage to you.

Children and elderly people are sometimes targeted by identity thieves because they may not monitor their credit reports closely. Some families place freezes on children's credit files to protect them before they reach adulthood. Elderly individuals may also benefit from freezes if they are at higher risk of fraud.

It is worth noting that a freeze is not necessary for everyone. If you are actively shopping for a mortgage, auto loan, or other credit product, a freeze would prevent lenders from accessing your report and could slow down the lending process. In these cases, you would need to temporarily lift the freeze during your credit shopping period.

Practical Takeaway: Consider placing a credit freeze if you have experienced a data breach, suspect identity theft, have had your personal information compromised, or simply want extra protection against potential fraud. If you are actively applying for new credit, wait until after your applications are processed before freezing your credit.

How to Place a Credit Freeze with Each Bureau

Placing a credit freeze is a straightforward process that you can complete online, by phone, or by mail with each of the three major credit bureaus. The process is the same regardless of whether you have been a victim of identity theft—all consumers have the right to place a free freeze.

Equifax Freeze Process: You can place a freeze with Equifax online at freeze.equifax.com. You will need to provide your name, date of birth, Social Security number, current address, and an email address or phone number for contact. Equifax will provide you with a confirmation number and a PIN (personal identification number) that you will need if you want to lift or modify the freeze later. Online requests are typically processed within one business day. You can also place a freeze by phone at 1-800-349-9960 or by mail by sending a request to Equifax Security Freeze, P.O. Box 105788, Atlanta, GA 30348.

Experian Freeze Process: You can place a freeze with Experian online at experian.com/freeze. Similar to Equifax, you will provide personal information including your name, date of birth, Social Security number, and address. Experian will provide a confirmation number and PIN for future reference. Online requests typically take about one business day to process. Experian also offers phone placement at 1-888-397-3742 and accepts mail requests sent to Experian Security Freeze, P.O. Box 9554, Allen, TX 75013.

TransUnion Freeze Process: You can place a freeze with TransUnion at transunion.com/credit-freeze. The process is similar: you provide personal information and receive a confirmation number and PIN. Online requests typically take one business day. TransUnion also accepts phone requests at 1-888-909-8872 and mail requests to TransUnion Security Freeze, P.O. Box 2000, Chester, PA 19022.

When you place a freeze, write down your confirmation numbers and PINs in a secure location. These numbers are important if you need to temporarily lift the freeze or remove it entirely. Keep records of which freeze PINs belong to which bureau, as they are not interchangeable.

You do not need to place freezes on the same day or in the same way. Some people prefer to place all three online on the same day, while others space them out. What matters is that you eventually place freezes with all three bureaus.

Practical Takeaway: Place a free credit freeze with Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion by visiting their websites or calling their toll-free numbers. Save your confirmation numbers and PINs in a secure location, as you will need them to modify or remove your freeze later. Online placement typically takes one business day.

How to Temporarily Lift or Remove Your Credit Freeze

One concern people have about credit freezes is whether they will interfere with legitimate credit applications. If you decide to apply for a credit card, loan, or other credit product, you will need to temporarily lift your freeze so the lender can access your credit report. Fortunately, this process is designed to be quick and simple.

To temporarily lift a freeze, you typically contact the credit bureau and provide your PIN or answer security questions to verify your identity. You can specify a time period for the lift—for example, 30 days or 90 days. During this time, the freeze is suspended and lenders can access your report. After the specified period ends, the freeze automatically returns to place. This allows you to protect your credit most of the time while still being able to apply for credit when you need to.

Many credit bureaus now allow you to lift a freeze online, though the exact process varies by bureau. Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion all offer online portals where you can manage your freeze. You log in using your PIN and can request a temporary lift without making a phone call. Some bureaus also allow you to specify which companies are allowed to access your report during the lift period, giving you more targeted control.
