Learn About Uber's Pet Policy and Requirements

Understanding Uber's Pet Policy Basics

Uber offers a service called Uber Pet that allows passengers to travel with their pets in select cities across the United States and Canada. This service operates similarly to standard Uber rides, but the vehicles are driven by drivers who have volunteered to accept animal passengers. The policy represents Uber's response to customer demand for pet-friendly transportation options, addressing a gap in the rideshare market where many drivers declined trips with animals.

The Uber Pet service became available in major metropolitan areas starting in 2021, with expansion continuing into 2024. As of the latest data, Uber Pet operates in over 70 cities, including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Boston, and Washington D.C. However, availability varies by location, and the service may not be available in all neighborhoods within participating cities. The pricing for Uber Pet typically ranges from $2 to $15 above standard Uber fares, depending on location and demand, though exact pricing fluctuates based on surge pricing and local factors.

One important distinction to understand is that Uber Pet is different from requesting a standard Uber and bringing a pet anyway. When you book an Uber Pet ride, you are specifically matching with a driver who has confirmed they are willing to transport animals. This protects both passengers and drivers by setting clear expectations upfront. Standard Uber drivers are not required to accept pets, and doing so without using the Uber Pet service option could result in cancellation fees or other complications.

Practical takeaway: Before booking, check whether Uber Pet operates in your area by opening the Uber app and looking for the pet icon option when requesting a ride. If you don't see this option, the service is not currently available in your location, and you should make alternative transportation arrangements for your pet.

Specific Pet Requirements and Size Restrictions

Uber Pet has clear requirements about what animals are permitted and under what conditions. The policy states that passengers may bring one pet per trip, though this rule applies to individual animals rather than strict species limitations. For example, one passenger could bring one cat, one dog, or one rabbit, but not multiple dogs. If you need to travel with multiple pets, you would need to book separate rides for each animal or contact Uber support to discuss your specific situation.

The service is designed primarily for domesticated pets, with dogs and cats being the most common animals transported. However, the policy also permits other common household pets such as guinea pigs, hamsters, rabbits, birds in carriers, and small reptiles. Animals must be contained in a carrier, cage, or crate appropriate to their size, or held securely by the passenger throughout the ride. This requirement exists for safety reasons—to protect the animal, the driver, and other passengers from injury or distraction during transit.

While Uber Pet does not officially list strict weight limits, practical considerations apply. Drivers must be able to accommodate the pet safely in their vehicle. Large dogs or animals requiring extensive space may face challenges, though many drivers with spacious vehicles successfully transport larger animals. Some animals may be denied service based on driver discretion if the driver feels unsafe or concerned about vehicle cleanliness. Aggressive animals, animals showing signs of illness, or animals that are not properly contained will typically result in trip cancellation.

Service animals, including guide dogs and other certified assistance animals, are treated differently from pets. These animals are legally required to be accommodated under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), regardless of whether you book through Uber Pet or request a standard Uber ride. Drivers cannot refuse service animals, and no additional pet fee applies when transporting a certified service animal.

Practical takeaway: Prepare a suitable carrier or container for your pet before booking your Uber Pet ride. Know your pet's behavior in vehicles and with strangers—if your pet has a history of anxiety, aggression, or motion sickness, discuss alternatives with Uber support or consider other transportation methods. Having these details confirmed before the driver arrives prevents cancellations and delays.

Health, Safety, and Vaccination Considerations

Uber Pet rides require that animals be in good health and free from visible signs of illness. The policy prohibits transporting animals that are vomiting, have diarrhea, are bleeding, or are otherwise displaying symptoms of sickness. This requirement protects the driver from exposure to contagious diseases and ensures the vehicle remains sanitary for subsequent passengers. If your pet is ill or injured, contact a veterinary clinic instead of using Uber Pet, as your animal needs medical attention rather than standard transportation.

While Uber does not explicitly require proof of current vaccinations for pets, this is a critical consideration from a practical and legal standpoint. Most veterinarians recommend that dogs have current vaccinations for rabies, distemper, and parvovirus. Cats should have current rabies and feline distemper vaccinations. If an unvaccinated pet bites or scratches a driver, the driver may face health risks and expenses. Additionally, your pet could be at risk if exposed to diseases from other animals or environments during the ride. Maintaining current vaccinations protects both your pet and others in the Uber vehicle.

Some cities have specific legal requirements for pet vaccination, particularly regarding rabies. In many jurisdictions, rabies vaccination is required by law for dogs and cats over a certain age. Before traveling with your pet via Uber, check your local health department's requirements. This information is typically available online or by contacting your city or county health office. Having vaccination records on hand provides documentation if questions arise about your pet's health status.

Cleanliness and grooming matter for Uber Pet rides. Your pet should be clean and free of excessive dirt, mud, or debris. Drivers have the right to decline a trip if an animal is visibly dirty or appears to pose a risk of damaging the vehicle. Similarly, pets should not have active fleas, ticks, or other parasites. Regular grooming and parasite prevention products keep your pet comfortable and reduce the likelihood of a driver canceling your ride.

Practical takeaway: Before booking an Uber Pet ride, verify that your pet's vaccinations are current with your veterinarian. If your pet is sick or injured, schedule a vet appointment instead of attempting transportation via rideshare. Groom your pet and ensure they are clean before the ride to maintain a positive experience with your driver.

Booking an Uber Pet Ride: Step-by-Step Process

Booking an Uber Pet ride differs slightly from requesting a standard Uber. First, open the Uber app on your smartphone and ensure you are logged into your account. At the bottom of the screen, you'll typically see ride options displayed as cards or buttons. Look for the option labeled "Uber Pet" or an icon featuring a paw print. In some app versions, you may need to scroll through available ride options to find the Pet option. If Uber Pet does not appear as an option, the service is not currently available in your location or is temporarily unavailable.

Once you tap on the Uber Pet option, the app will show you the current price estimate and expected pickup time. This estimate includes the base Uber fare plus the pet surcharge for your area. You'll then enter your pickup and destination locations, just as you would for a standard Uber ride. Some riders add notes in the "Driver Notes" section, such as "I have a friendly golden retriever in a carrier" to provide additional context, though this is optional.

After confirming your ride request, the app begins matching you with available Uber Pet drivers in your area. These are drivers who have specifically indicated in their driver app that they are willing to accept pet passengers. You'll see the driver's information, including their name, vehicle type, and rating. The app will display their location and provide an estimated arrival time. Once the driver accepts your request and is en route, you can track their progress on the map.

When the driver arrives, have your pet ready and contained in an appropriate carrier or crate. Meet the driver at your pickup location promptly to avoid cancellation fees. Load your pet into the vehicle if the driver has not already done so. During the ride, keep your pet secured and calm. Avoid distracting the driver by keeping your pet quiet if possible. If your pet becomes anxious or agitated, politely inform the driver so they can help address the situation if needed.

Practical takeaway: Before your scheduled pickup, ensure your pet has used the bathroom, is calm, and has access to water if the ride is longer than 10 minutes. Have your address information correct in the app to avoid navigation issues. Be ready at your pickup location when the driver arrives to ensure a smooth, quick transaction.
