What Uber Health Medical Rides Are and How They Work

Uber Health is a program operated by Uber that provides transportation services specifically designed for people who need to get to medical appointments. Unlike regular Uber rides, Uber Health rides are paid for by healthcare organizations, insurance companies, or social service agencies rather than by the person riding. This means individuals don't pay out of pocket for these rides.

The service operates through a separate platform from the regular Uber app. Healthcare providers, clinics, hospitals, and insurance plans partner with Uber Health to offer this service to their patients or members. When a medical provider prescribes a ride through Uber Health, the appointment is scheduled and tracked through a dedicated system that connects the patient, the driver, and the healthcare organization.

Uber Health launched in 2017 and has expanded to cover hundreds of cities across the United States. The service addresses what researchers call "medical transportation barriers" — situations where people miss doctor's appointments because they can't afford a ride or don't have reliable transportation. According to data from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, transportation issues account for about 3.6 million missed medical appointments each year in the United States.

The rides themselves work similarly to regular Uber services. A driver picks up the patient at their location and transports them to their medical appointment. Drivers receive training on working with patients who may have mobility challenges or special needs. The service operates 24/7 in most markets, meaning people can schedule rides for early morning appointments or evening visits.

One key feature of Uber Health is appointment tracking. The healthcare provider or social service organization can see when a ride is scheduled, confirm that the patient was picked up, and verify that they arrived at their appointment. This data helps medical providers understand whether transportation barriers are preventing patients from receiving care.

Practical takeaway: Uber Health is a no-cost transportation service for medical appointments that is organized through healthcare providers or insurance plans, not through a personal app download.

Which Healthcare Organizations and Insurance Plans Offer Uber Health

Uber Health is used by a wide range of healthcare organizations across the United States. These include large hospital systems, community health centers, Medicaid managed care plans, Medicare Advantage plans, and nonprofit health organizations. The service is available through more than 800 health plans and healthcare provider organizations as of 2024.

Major insurance companies that have incorporated Uber Health into their programs include Medicaid plans in numerous states. Medicaid, the federal-state program that provides health coverage to low-income individuals, has been a major adopter of Uber Health services. Many state Medicaid programs cover transportation to medical appointments as part of their benefits, and Uber Health provides a modern way to deliver that transportation.

Large hospital systems in major cities use Uber Health for various purposes. Some use it to help patients get to follow-up appointments after hospital discharge. Others use it to ensure patients can reach specialty care appointments at medical centers. For example, if a patient needs to visit a cancer treatment center across town or a specialized surgery center, their healthcare provider may arrange an Uber Health ride.

Community health centers, which serve uninsured and underinsured populations, have also adopted Uber Health. According to the National Association of Community Health Centers, transportation is one of the top barriers to healthcare access for their patient populations. By offering Uber Health rides, these centers help more patients show up for preventive care, chronic disease management, and mental health services.

Nursing homes and assisted living facilities in some areas use Uber Health to transport residents to medical appointments. This is especially useful for residents who don't have family available to drive them or whose facility doesn't operate its own transportation service.

To find out whether a specific healthcare provider or insurance plan offers Uber Health, patients can ask their doctor's office, call their insurance company, or contact their community health center directly. Healthcare providers have information about what transportation services are available to their patients.

Practical takeaway: Many Medicaid plans, Medicare Advantage plans, hospitals, and community health centers now offer Uber Health rides, but availability varies by location and organization.

Types of Medical Appointments Covered by Uber Health

Uber Health covers rides to a broad range of medical appointments. The specific appointments covered depend on the healthcare organization or insurance plan offering the service, but generally, transportation is provided for visits that are medically necessary and prescribed by a healthcare provider.

Preventive care appointments are commonly covered. This includes annual physical exams, routine checkups, and screening tests. When a patient's doctor schedules a mammogram, colonoscopy, or blood pressure screening, Uber Health may cover the ride to that appointment. Preventive care is important because it helps catch health problems early, but transportation barriers can prevent people from completing these routine visits.

Treatment appointments for chronic diseases are frequently covered. People with diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, arthritis, and other ongoing health conditions need regular medical visits to manage their conditions. Uber Health helps ensure that patients can get to appointments with their primary care doctor, cardiologist, endocrinologist, or other specialists who manage their diseases.

Mental health and behavioral health appointments are covered through many Uber Health programs. This includes therapy sessions, psychiatric appointments, and counseling. Mental health services require consistent, regular appointments, and transportation barriers can prevent people from receiving the mental health care they need. Uber Health has helped increase treatment adherence for patients with depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions.

Dialysis appointments are covered in many programs. Patients with kidney failure require dialysis treatments typically three times per week, and missing appointments can be dangerous. Uber Health helps ensure reliable transportation for these critical treatments.

Post-operative and follow-up appointments are covered. After surgery or hospitalization, patients need follow-up visits to monitor their recovery. Uber Health helps patients reach these important appointments when they may be temporarily unable to drive.

Vaccine appointments, including routine immunizations and specialized vaccines, may be covered. During the COVID-19 pandemic, some Uber Health programs were specifically used to help people get to vaccination appointments.

Dental appointments, vision appointments, and pharmacy visits are covered through some programs, depending on what the healthcare organization has arranged.

Practical takeaway: Uber Health covers rides to preventive care, chronic disease management, mental health appointments, dialysis, surgery follow-ups, and many other medically necessary visits, though specific coverage depends on the offering organization.

How Uber Health Rides Are Scheduled and Managed

The process for scheduling an Uber Health ride differs from ordering a regular Uber because the ride is arranged through a healthcare provider rather than through the patient's own request. When a patient is at a medical appointment or has called a clinic to schedule a visit, the healthcare provider's staff can arrange an Uber Health ride as part of the appointment process.

A healthcare provider or social service worker enters the patient's information into the Uber Health portal or system. This includes the pickup location (usually the patient's home or current location), the destination (the medical facility where the appointment is scheduled), and the appointment time. The system then schedules an Uber driver to arrive at an appropriate time before the appointment.

The patient receives communication about their scheduled ride. Depending on the program, this communication may come via text message, phone call, or email. The patient learns what time the driver will arrive and receives the driver's name and vehicle information, similar to a regular Uber ride.

On the day of the appointment, the Uber Health system sends a reminder to the patient. This helps reduce missed appointments caused by the patient simply forgetting about their ride or medical visit.

The driver picks up the patient at the scheduled time and location. Uber Health drivers receive training on working with patients who may have mobility issues, cognitive impairments, or other health conditions that require special attention. Drivers are trained to be patient, allow extra time for patients who move slowly, and provide supportive service.

After dropping the patient at the medical facility, the healthcare provider's system records that the patient was transported. If the patient does not show up for their appointment, the healthcare provider may be alerted through the system. This allows the provider to follow up with the patient to reschedule if needed.

For patients who need a return ride from their appointment back home, this can also be arranged through Uber Health. Some programs automatically schedule return rides when the appointment is booked, while others require the healthcare provider to schedule them separately.
