Learn About U-Haul Military Rental Discounts and Options

Understanding U-Haul's Military Discount Program

U-Haul offers rental discounts specifically for active-duty military members, veterans, and military families. This program recognizes military service by reducing the cost of equipment rentals, including trucks, trailers, and moving supplies. The discount structure varies depending on your military status and the type of rental you need.

The military discount program has been in place for many years as part of U-Haul's commitment to serving the military community. Unlike some promotions that change frequently, this discount remains a standing offer. However, the specific discount percentage and terms can vary based on current company policies and regional availability.

Active-duty service members typically receive discounts on truck rentals, which can range from 10% to 30% off standard rates depending on the rental type and location. Veterans and military family members may receive different discount levels. Reserve and National Guard members often participate in the program as well, though verification requirements may differ from active-duty personnel.

The discount covers various U-Haul rental categories, including pickup trucks, cargo vans, moving trucks of different sizes, and trailers. Accessories and moving supplies may or may not be included in the discount, depending on what you're purchasing. It's important to understand what falls under the discount when you're planning your rental.

U-Haul processes military discounts through their standard rental system. When you reserve online or call to book a rental, you'll typically provide military verification information. This might include your military ID number, service dates, or other identifying information. The discount is then applied to your quote before you complete the reservation.

Practical takeaway: Before booking any U-Haul rental if you have military service, inquire about military discounts at the time of reservation. Mention your military status early in the booking process so the discount can be reflected in your initial quote.

Who Can Access Military Rental Discounts

U-Haul's military discount program extends to several categories of military-connected individuals. Understanding which category applies to you helps you know what information to prepare when booking a rental and what discount structure may apply.

Active-duty service members from all branches of the United States Armed Forces can access military discounts. This includes the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Space Force. Current active-duty status is typically verified through military ID or service verification systems. Active-duty personnel generally receive the highest discount percentages offered through the military program.

Veterans who have been honorably discharged or separated from service may also receive military discounts on U-Haul rentals. The time since separation doesn't typically affect your status as a veteran for purposes of this discount. Veterans will need to provide proof of military service, which can include DD Form 214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty), Veterans Health Identification Card, VA disability rating letter, or other official military documentation.

Military family members may receive discounts when renting on behalf of an active-duty service member or veteran. Some U-Haul locations offer discounts to spouses of active-duty personnel or to dependents renting under specific circumstances. Requirements for family member discounts can vary by location, so confirming this with U-Haul directly before booking is important.

Reserve and National Guard members typically participate in the military discount program, though they may need to provide different documentation than active-duty personnel. Members of the Air Force Reserve, Army Reserve, Naval Reserve, and state National Guard units can generally access these discounts with proper military verification.

Retired military personnel who have completed a full career of service are generally considered veterans and can access veteran discount rates. Military retirement status can be verified through retirement ID cards or discharge documentation.

Practical takeaway: Gather your military verification documents before booking. Having your military ID, DD Form 214, or VA documentation ready will speed up the rental process and ensure you receive the appropriate discount for your military status.

How to Access Military Discounts When Booking

Accessing U-Haul military discounts involves a straightforward process, though the exact steps may differ depending on whether you book online or through other channels. Understanding your booking options helps you choose the method that works best for your situation.

Online booking through U-Haul's website allows you to enter military information during the reservation process. When creating your rental quote, look for a field or option related to military status or discounts. Some websites have a specific "Military" or "Discount Code" section where you can input your military branch and service status. The discount typically calculates automatically once you provide this information. Review the quote carefully to confirm the discount has been applied before finalizing your reservation.

Phone booking with U-Haul representatives offers another path to access military discounts. When calling U-Haul's reservation line, tell the representative you're an active-duty member or veteran at the beginning of the conversation. They can ask for military verification information and apply the appropriate discount to your quote. Phone booking may be helpful if you have questions about which discount applies to your situation or if online booking seems unclear.

In-person rental at a U-Haul location gives you the opportunity to mention your military status to the rental agent when you arrive. Bring your military ID or discharge documentation with you. The agent can verify your status and ensure the military discount is reflected in your final rental agreement. Sometimes walk-in customers discover discounts they weren't aware of when discussing their rental with the agent.

U-Haul partner locations and franchises may have varying processes for applying military discounts. Some independent U-Haul dealers might process discounts differently than corporate U-Haul locations. When booking through a partner location, specifically mention that you're looking to use a military discount so the agent can walk you through their verification process.

The verification process typically happens at the time of booking or at pickup. Have your military credentials readily available, whether that's your military ID card, VA ID, discharge paperwork, or other official documents that confirm your service. The faster you can provide verification, the faster your rental can be processed.

Practical takeaway: Choose your booking method based on what works for your schedule. If booking online, look for military discount fields before entering payment information. If booking by phone or in person, mention your military status early so the discount can be incorporated into your initial quote.

Military Discount Rates and What They Cover

Understanding what discount rates U-Haul offers and what items the discounts actually cover helps you accurately calculate your rental costs. Discount percentages and coverage can vary based on location, equipment type, and current promotions.

Military discount percentages typically range from 10% to 30% off standard rental rates, though specific percentages vary. Truck rentals frequently receive the higher end of this range, as these are larger equipment items with higher base costs. The discount is usually applied to the rental rate itself rather than the total bill, which means ancillary fees or insurance costs might not be included in the discount calculation.

One-way rentals and local rentals may have different discount structures. A one-way rental, where you pick up the truck in one city and return it to another location, might have a different percentage discount than a local rental where you return the equipment to the same location. Long-distance moves sometimes qualify for additional military discounts beyond the standard percentage.

Equipment types covered by military discounts typically include pickup trucks, cargo vans, moving vans of all sizes, and trailers. Smaller equipment like dollies, hand trucks, and furniture pads may or may not be included in the discount percentage. When calculating your total costs, confirm with U-Haul which items are covered by the military discount on your specific rental.

Mileage charges represent a significant portion of many U-Haul rentals. Military discounts sometimes apply to mileage costs, but not always. Some locations offer unlimited mileage options that may have separate military pricing. Understanding whether your military discount covers mileage charges or applies only to the base rental rate helps you budget accurately.

Insurance and protection plans sold by U-Haul often are not included in the military discount calculation. Damage waiver coverage, roadside assistance, and other add-on protections are frequently charged at standard rates. If you're considering purchasing insurance, ask whether military discounts apply to these products at checkout.

Seasonal rates and peak-time pricing can affect your final costs. Military discounts typically apply to whatever rate structure is in effect for your rental dates. During
