Learn About TSA PreCheck Status and Requirements

Understanding TSA PreCheck: What It Is and How It Works

TSA PreCheck is a trusted traveler program run by the Transportation Security Administration, a division of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The program allows participating travelers to move through airport security checkpoints faster at participating U.S. airports. Instead of going through the standard security screening process, TSA PreCheck members use dedicated security lanes where the screening procedures are less time-intensive.

When you enroll in TSA PreCheck, you receive a Known Traveler Number (KTN). This unique identifier stays with you and can be used when booking flights. Once your airline has your KTN, the TSA can identify you as a trusted traveler before you arrive at the airport. At security checkpoints, TSA PreCheck members typically keep their shoes, belts, and light jackets on during screening. Laptops and liquids may remain in bags, and passengers can keep their hands-free orthopedic or metal-containing religious items on.

As of 2024, TSA PreCheck is available at more than 200 U.S. airports, covering most major travel hubs and many regional facilities. The program serves millions of travelers annually. TSA PreCheck is different from Global Entry, which covers international travel, though Global Entry members also receive TSA PreCheck benefits when traveling domestically.

The program costs $78 to $85 for a five-year membership, depending on where and how you complete your enrollment. Some travelers obtain this benefit through their employer or credit card rewards programs. The annual cost breaks down to roughly $15 to $17 per year, which many frequent travelers find worthwhile given the time saved at security.

Practical takeaway: TSA PreCheck is a fee-based program that streamlines security screening at U.S. airports. Understanding the basics—including what it covers, how long it lasts, and where it's available—helps you determine whether it fits your travel patterns.

Age and Citizenship Requirements for TSA PreCheck

TSA PreCheck enrollment has straightforward age and citizenship requirements. You must be at least 18 years old to enroll in TSA PreCheck. Children under 18 do not need their own membership to receive expedited screening; they can travel with an adult family member who holds TSA PreCheck status. When a TSA PreCheck member travels with children, those children can proceed through the dedicated PreCheck security lane without individual memberships.

U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent resident status is required to obtain TSA PreCheck. U.S. citizens include people born in the United States, those who have gone through naturalization, and U.S. nationals. Lawful permanent residents—also called green card holders—may also enroll. You'll need to provide proof of citizenship or permanent residency during the enrollment process, typically in the form of a valid passport, birth certificate, or green card.

Non-U.S. citizens and non-permanent residents cannot obtain TSA PreCheck status through the standard program. However, citizens of certain countries may participate in reciprocal trusted traveler programs. For example, citizens of Canada, the United Kingdom, and several other nations have their own trusted traveler programs that receive similar benefits in U.S. airports.

The age requirement exists because the TSA vetting process requires adult consent and responsibility. The citizenship requirement reflects the security clearance nature of the program—the TSA performs background checks on all enrollees, which requires verification through U.S. government databases and records.

Practical takeaway: You must be 18 or older and hold U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status to enroll in TSA PreCheck. Children traveling with PreCheck members can use the expedited lanes without their own membership, and travelers from allied nations may explore their own trusted traveler programs.

Background Check and Criminal Record Considerations

TSA PreCheck involves a thorough background investigation conducted by the TSA and other federal agencies. This process includes checks of your criminal history, immigration records, and other relevant databases to ensure you do not pose a security risk. The TSA reviews both felony and misdemeanor convictions, as well as pending charges, to make determinations about your participation in the program.

Having a criminal record does not automatically disqualify you from TSA PreCheck, but certain crimes will result in denial of membership. The TSA maintains a list of crimes that bar individuals from participation, which includes violent felonies, drug trafficking offenses, and crimes related to terrorism or security breaches. Misdemeanors involving theft, fraud, or dishonesty may also result in denial or revocation of benefits. Additionally, individuals with pending criminal charges or open warrants cannot obtain or maintain TSA PreCheck status.

The TSA also reviews immigration violations, including overstaying visas, entering the country illegally, or providing false information to immigration authorities. If you have a history of such violations, your application may be denied. The agency looks at your overall conduct and determines whether you represent a potential security risk to the aviation system.

It is important to understand that the TSA review is confidential, and results are not shared with other agencies or employers. If your membership is denied or revoked, you receive written notification explaining the reason. You have the right to appeal the decision through a formal review process, where you can present additional information or challenge the TSA's findings.

Practical takeaway: TSA PreCheck requires passing a background investigation that includes criminal history, immigration status, and security risk assessment. Serious crimes and pending charges disqualify applicants, but minor infractions may not. Understanding what triggers denial helps you assess whether you can proceed with enrollment.

The Enrollment Process and Required Documentation

Enrolling in TSA PreCheck involves multiple steps and requires gathering specific documents before you begin. The process typically takes four to six weeks from start to finish, though you may receive your Known Traveler Number within days of completing your in-person appointment. The enrollment process consists of an online portion followed by an in-person appointment at an approved enrollment center.

To start the online portion, you create an account on the TSA PreCheck enrollment website and complete an application form. You'll provide personal information including your name, date of birth, contact details, and passport information. You'll answer detailed questions about your background, criminal history, immigration status, and any previous visa denials. This portion takes roughly 10 to 15 minutes to complete and can be done from any computer or mobile device with internet access.

Required documentation for your in-person appointment includes:

• A valid government-issued photo identification (such as a driver's license or passport)
• Proof of citizenship or permanent residency (passport, birth certificate, naturalization certificate, or green card)
• Proof of Social Security number (Social Security card, tax return, or W-2 form)
• Proof of current address (utility bill, lease agreement, or bank statement from the past two months)

Your in-person appointment takes approximately 10 minutes. During this visit, a TSA officer will verify your documents, take your fingerprints for the background check, and take a digital photo. Appointments are available at enrollment centers located in airports, office locations, and some retail partners across the country. You can schedule your appointment online at your convenience.

Practical takeaway: TSA PreCheck enrollment requires completing an online application, gathering four categories of documentation, and attending a brief in-person appointment. Organizing your documents in advance and knowing what's required can streamline the process and prevent delays.

Cost, Payment Options, and Fee Waivers

TSA PreCheck membership costs between $78 and $85 for a five-year period, depending on the enrollment location and payment method. The exact fee is set by the TSA but may vary slightly between enrollment centers operated by different service providers. This breaks down to approximately $15 to $17 per year, or roughly $3 per trip for frequent travelers who fly four times per year.
