Learn About TSA PreCheck and Known Traveler Numbers

Understanding TSA PreCheck: What It Is and How It Works

TSA PreCheck is a trusted traveler program run by the Transportation Security Administration that offers a faster security screening experience at U.S. airports. When you enroll in this program, you receive a Known Traveler Number (KTN), which is a unique identifier that tells TSA screeners you've completed background checks and vetting. This number gets attached to your airline ticket, signaling to airport security that you've gone through an additional screening process.

The program was created to reduce wait times at security checkpoints by allowing vetted travelers to move through a streamlined screening lane. Instead of removing shoes, belts, and light jackets, removing laptops from bags, or taking out liquids, PreCheck members can keep these items on or in their bags during the x-ray screening process. The screening itself still happens—TSA officers still scan your belongings and use metal detectors—but the process moves faster because fewer steps are required.

As of 2024, TSA PreCheck has more than 13 million active members according to TSA data. The program operates at over 200 U.S. airports, including major hubs like Atlanta, Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York, as well as many smaller regional airports. The cost is $78 to $85 for a five-year membership, depending on your location and enrollment method.

The program works by matching your Known Traveler Number to your airline reservation. When you book a flight, you enter your KTN in the same place you enter your frequent flyer numbers. The airline then communicates this information to TSA before your flight. At the airport, TSA officers check your boarding pass and identify you as a PreCheck member, directing you to the dedicated PreCheck security lane.

Practical Takeaway: Learn what your Known Traveler Number does: it's the key that unlocks faster security screening. Understanding how this nine-digit code connects your enrollment to your airline ticket helps you use the program correctly every time you fly.

Who Can Enroll in TSA PreCheck and Basic Requirements

TSA PreCheck is available to U.S. citizens and certain lawful permanent residents and foreign nationals. To enroll, you must be at least 18 years old and hold a valid U.S. passport, passport card, or other approved travel document. The program requires that you have no disqualifying criminal convictions, security-related violations, or immigration issues in your background.

The vetting process for TSA PreCheck includes an extensive background check. TSA reviews your criminal history, immigration records, and security concerns. If you have a felony conviction, certain drug-related offenses, or immigration violations, you may face barriers to enrollment. However, each case is reviewed individually, and TSA considers the circumstances and timing of any issues in your background.

Lawful permanent residents—people with green cards—can enroll in TSA PreCheck. Some visa holders, such as those on H-1B work visas or L-1 visas, may also be able to enroll, though the rules can be complex. Foreign nationals with a U.S. visa status should contact TSA or visit an enrollment center to confirm whether they meet the requirements.

You'll need to provide documentation during the enrollment process. This typically includes your passport or passport card, a Real ID-compliant driver's license, proof of your address, and payment information. Some enrollment centers request additional documents, so it's useful to check your local center's website before your appointment. The background check can take several weeks to process after you've completed your in-person enrollment.

Age exceptions exist for certain groups. For example, members of the U.S. military and certain federal employees may have different pathways to PreCheck benefits. Children under 18 don't need their own PreCheck membership—they can travel with a parent or guardian who has an active membership.

Practical Takeaway: Before scheduling an enrollment appointment, verify your citizenship or immigration status and check whether you have any disqualifying background issues that might affect your enrollment. Knowing your status in advance prevents wasted time and appointments.

The Enrollment Process: Steps and What to Expect

The TSA PreCheck enrollment process involves two main stages: an online application and an in-person appointment at an enrollment center. The online portion takes about 10 to 15 minutes and asks for personal information, including your name, date of birth, citizenship status, address, and passport information. You'll create an account on the TSA PreCheck website where you can track your application status.

After you complete the online form, you'll receive a notification to schedule your in-person appointment. You have a window of time to book this appointment—typically 90 days from when you submit your online application. During this appointment, a TSA officer will review your documents, take your fingerprints for a background check, and take a digital photo. This appointment usually lasts 10 to 15 minutes.

Enrollment centers are located in many cities across the United States. Some are run by TSA directly, while others are operated by TSA-approved vendors like Clear, travel agencies, or passport acceptance facilities. Over 400 enrollment locations exist nationwide. You can find the nearest center and book an appointment online through the official TSA PreCheck website. Many locations offer both weekday and weekend appointment slots.

During your appointment, bring original copies of the documents you listed in your online application. This typically includes your passport or passport card, a state-issued ID (like a driver's license), proof of your address (such as a utility bill or lease), and your Social Security number (you can write it on a form rather than providing a card). Payment of the enrollment fee is also collected during this visit—cash, check, credit card, or debit card are usually accepted.

After your appointment, TSA begins the background check process. This can take anywhere from several days to several weeks. You'll receive notification by email once your background check is complete and your membership is active. At that point, you'll receive your Known Traveler Number, which you can begin using when you book flights.

Practical Takeaway: Gather all required documents before scheduling your appointment, including your passport, state ID, and proof of address. Having everything ready means your appointment runs smoothly and you won't need to reschedule.

Your Known Traveler Number and How to Use It

Your Known Traveler Number is a nine-digit code that serves as your identifier within the TSA PreCheck system. This number is unique to you and remains the same for the duration of your five-year membership. It appears in your PreCheck membership materials and is also available in your TSA PreCheck account online.

The most important step in using your KTN is entering it when you book your airline ticket. Most major U.S. carriers—including American, Delta, Southwest, United, and others—have a field in their booking system specifically for your Known Traveler Number. This field is usually near where you enter frequent flyer numbers. Some airlines call it "Known Traveler Number," while others may label it "TSA PreCheck Number" or "TSA Identifier." If you don't see this field during online booking, you can contact the airline to add your KTN after you've booked your ticket.

If you already have frequent flyer accounts with airlines, many carriers allow you to save your KTN in your frequent flyer profile. Once it's saved, the number automatically populates each time you book. This saves time on future bookings. To set this up, log into your frequent flyer account and look for "TSA PreCheck" or "Known Traveler Number" in your profile or preferences section.

At the airport, your boarding pass will indicate your PreCheck status. Look for the letters "TSA PRE" printed on your boarding pass—this confirms that your KTN was successfully linked to your reservation. Without this indicator on your boarding pass, you won't be directed to the PreCheck lane, even though you're an active member. If you don't see it, speak with a gate agent, who can sometimes add it to your boarding pass if there was an error during booking.

When traveling internationally on a foreign airline, your PreCheck benefits may not transfer. Most international carriers don't have the same TSA PreCheck integration as U.S.-based airlines. However, when you return to the U.S. and clear customs, you can use PreCheck at the security checkpoint for your connecting or departing flight if you're on a U.S. airline.
