What Is the Credit One X5 Card and How Does It Work

The Credit One X5 Card is a secured credit card designed for people who are building or rebuilding their credit history. Unlike traditional credit cards that require an extensive credit history, this card works by requiring a cash deposit that serves as collateral. The deposit amount typically ranges from $300 to $2,500, and this becomes your credit limit. For example, if you deposit $500, you receive a $500 credit limit to use for purchases.

The card functions like a standard credit card in most ways. You receive a physical card that you can use at merchants both online and in physical locations. You get monthly billing statements showing your purchases, and you make monthly payments just like with any other credit card. The key difference is that your deposit sits in a separate account held by the bank, giving them security while you build a track record of responsible credit use.

Credit One Bank, the issuer of this card, reports your payment activity to all three major credit bureaus—Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. This reporting is what helps build your credit history. Each on-time payment gets recorded, and over time, these positive records can improve your credit score. The card also comes with fraud protection and zero liability for unauthorized charges, similar to other major credit cards.

One important detail: the cash deposit is separate from any annual fees. Many secured cards charge annual fees ranging from $0 to $75 or more. You should understand all fees associated with the card before deciding whether it meets your needs. The deposit itself is not a fee—it remains your money and can be returned to you under certain conditions, though this typically happens only after you've demonstrated responsible credit behavior or the card issuer upgrades you to an unsecured card.

Practical Takeaway: View the Credit One X5 Card as a tool for demonstrating creditworthiness through monthly on-time payments. The deposit requirement means there's less risk for the bank, which is why they're willing to work with people who have limited or damaged credit histories. Understanding this relationship helps you see why responsible use matters—you're essentially building evidence that you're a reliable borrower.

Understanding Fees, Interest Rates, and Costs

The costs associated with the Credit One X5 Card include several components you should understand before using it. The annual percentage rate (APR) for purchases typically ranges from 19.9% to 24.9%, depending on your creditworthiness at the time of review. This is higher than many unsecured credit cards, but this is standard for secured cards designed for people with credit challenges. If you carry a balance—meaning you don't pay off your full statement balance each month—you'll owe interest charges based on this APR applied to your outstanding balance.

Annual fees for the Credit One X5 Card vary. The card may have an annual fee ranging from $35 to $99 depending on the specific version and current product offerings. Some versions may have lower annual fees, while others might be higher. These fees are charged to your account yearly and may be charged to your credit limit, effectively reducing the amount available to spend. For instance, if you have a $500 limit and a $75 annual fee is charged, you'd have $425 available to use.

Additional fees you might encounter include late payment fees (typically $25-$35 if you miss a due date), cash advance fees (usually 3% of the amount withdrawn, with a minimum fee), and foreign transaction fees (typically 1-3% if you use the card internationally). There may also be a fee if you request an increase to your credit limit. Understanding these potential charges helps you budget and avoid unnecessary expenses.

One way to minimize costs is to never carry a balance. If you use the card for small purchases and pay the full statement balance before the due date each month, you avoid interest charges entirely. This strategy lets you focus the benefits of the card—credit building—without the expense of interest. However, you still pay the annual fee whether you carry a balance or not, so factor that into whether the card makes sense for your situation.

Practical Takeaway: Calculate the true cost of using this card over a year. If the annual fee is $75 and you might pay $10-20 in other potential fees, that's roughly $85-95 per year in costs. Weigh this against the value of building credit history, which could save you thousands in lower interest rates when you later borrow for a car, home, or other major purchase. For many people building credit, this cost is a worthwhile investment.

How the Credit One X5 Card Affects Your Credit Score

Using the Credit One X5 Card can positively impact your credit score when you use it responsibly. Your credit score is built from information reported to credit bureaus about your borrowing and payment history. The card issuer reports five key pieces of information: whether you make payments on time, how much of your available credit you use, the age of your accounts, the types of credit you have, and whether you've had recent credit inquiries or negative marks.

Payment history is the most important factor, accounting for about 35% of your credit score calculation. When you make your monthly payment by the due date, this positive information gets reported to the credit bureaus. Over several months of on-time payments—say, six to twelve months—you establish a pattern that credit bureaus recognize. This is particularly powerful if you're rebuilding after missed payments or other negative marks, because it shows recent responsible behavior that can gradually offset older problems.

Credit utilization ratio is the second most important factor, accounting for about 30% of your score. This is the percentage of your available credit that you're using at any given time. For example, if your credit limit is $500 and your balance is $150, your utilization ratio is 30%. Credit scoring models generally favor lower utilization ratios. Experts often recommend keeping utilization below 30% for the best impact on your score. With a secured card, this means if you have a $500 limit, try to keep your balance below $150. Making regular payments that reduce your balance helps maintain a healthy utilization ratio.

The age of your credit accounts matters too, accounting for about 15% of your score. The longer you keep an account open in good standing, the better this looks to credit bureaus. This means even after your credit improves, keeping the Credit One X5 Card open—assuming you're satisfied with it—can help your credit score by maintaining the history you've built. Some people close secured cards too early, which can actually hurt their score by shortening their average account age.

Practical Takeaway: Think of the Credit One X5 Card as a 12-24 month credit-building project. Set a goal to make every single payment on time and keep your balance low. After demonstrating this behavior, you may receive offers for unsecured cards with better terms. The investment in using this card responsibly can translate into meaningfully better credit scores, which affects rates on future loans and financial products.

Comparing the Credit One X5 Card to Other Secured Credit Cards

The Credit One X5 Card exists within a competitive market of secured credit cards, each with different features and costs. The Capital One Secured Mastercard typically charges an annual fee of $29-$39 and reports to all three credit bureaus. Deposits range from $200 to $2,500, similar to the Credit One X5 Card. One advantage is that Capital One may offer a path to product upgrades, though the timeline and conditions vary. The Discover it Secured Credit Card stands out because it offers 2% cash back on dining and gas, and 1% cash back on other purchases—meaning you earn money back on spending. However, Discover it typically requires a deposit of at least $200 and has an annual fee of $0 if you maintain the card in good standing, which is generally lower than many competitors.

Many credit unions offer secured cards as well, sometimes with lower fees for members. For example, some credit unions charge $0 annual fees on secured cards and may offer lower APRs. If you're a credit union member, investigating your institution's offerings is worthwhile. The trade-off is that credit union cards may have smaller deposit minimums and maximums, and they're less widely recognized than major
