Learn About Texas Driver's License Costs and Payment Options

Understanding Texas Driver's License Fees and Types

Texas offers several types of driver's licenses, and each one comes with different costs. The most common type is the standard Class C driver's license, which allows you to operate passenger vehicles. This license costs $16 for a six-year term if you renew in person at a Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) office. If you're under 18, the cost is the same, but the license has some restrictions on when and where you can drive.

Commercial driver's licenses (CDLs) in Texas cost more than standard licenses because they permit you to operate larger vehicles like trucks and buses. A CDL runs about $100 for a six-year period. Texas also offers motorcycle endorsements, which add $25 to your standard license fee. If you want to carry a handgun, the Texas License to Carry costs $40 for a five-year term, though this is separate from your driver's license.

The state also issues Enhanced Driver's Licenses (EDLs) that cost $32 for a six-year term. These licenses meet federal Real ID requirements and can be used for travel across North America. Real ID-compliant standard licenses cost $16 and are now required for federal building access and air travel within the United States.

Texas also has special licenses for people over 85 years old, which cost only $8 for a three-year term. Veteran driver's licenses are available at no cost to honorably discharged military members. Understanding which type of license you need helps you plan for the correct fee.

Takeaway: Identify which license type fits your driving needs, as this determines your total cost. Check the Texas DPS website to confirm current fees, as they may change annually.

Renewal Costs and How Often You Need to Pay

In Texas, standard driver's licenses expire based on your age. If you're between 18 and 84 years old, your license lasts six years. This means you pay the $16 renewal fee once every six years for a standard license. If you're under 18, your license also lasts six years, but you may need to renew it sooner if you turn 18 before the expiration date. In that case, you'd get a new license with an updated age classification, and you'd pay another $16 fee.

Drivers over 85 must renew every three years, paying $8 each time. Drivers aged 85 and older can renew by mail, which provides convenience but doesn't change the renewal cost. Military members and veterans can renew at reduced rates or for free, depending on their status. Active-duty military members stationed in Texas can renew for free, while honorably discharged veterans receive the free veteran license option.

If your license expires while you're out of state or overseas, you may have a grace period to renew without penalty. However, driving with an expired license is illegal in Texas, and you can face fines starting at $100. The Texas DPS sends renewal notices to the address on file, usually 60 days before expiration.

You can renew your license up to one year before it expires, so you can plan your payment ahead of time. This allows you to budget for the fee without rushing. Some people renew early to avoid the stress of doing it right before expiration.

Takeaway: Mark your expiration date on your calendar and plan to renew within the timeline that works for your schedule. Most renewals happen every six years, giving you predictable costs to budget for.

Replacement License Fees and When You Need Them

If your driver's license is lost, stolen, or damaged, you'll need to pay for a replacement. In Texas, getting a duplicate or replacement license costs $11. This fee applies whether your license was damaged in an accident, faded after years of use, or lost in other ways. The replacement license has the same expiration date as your original, so you're not extending your license term—you're just getting a new card with the same validity period.

If your license was stolen, you should report the theft to local police and get a report number. While this doesn't reduce the $11 replacement fee, it creates a record in case someone tries to use your information fraudulently. You can also place a fraud alert with the Texas DPS when you report the theft.

Name changes due to marriage, divorce, or legal petition also require a replacement license. The fee is $11, the same as for lost or damaged licenses. You'll need to bring documentation of your name change, such as a marriage certificate or court order, along with your application.

Address changes don't require paying a replacement fee. You can update your address online through the Texas DPS website, by mail, or in person at a DPS office at no cost. If you want your new address printed on a physical license card, that's when the $11 replacement fee applies.

Some people choose to get a replacement if their current license photo is very old or unflattering, but this is optional and costs $11. The Texas DPS doesn't charge extra for a new photo during a regular renewal, so you can wait until your scheduled renewal date to get an updated picture without extra cost.

Takeaway: Keep your license in a safe place to avoid the $11 replacement cost. If you lose it, report the loss promptly and budget for the replacement fee as part of your unexpected expenses.

Payment Methods and Where to Pay

Texas offers multiple ways to pay for driver's license services, making it convenient to choose the method that works best for you. At Texas DPS offices, you can pay in cash, credit card, debit card, or check. Most offices accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover. This gives you flexibility if you prefer not to carry cash or want to track the expense with a card statement.

Online renewal through the Texas DPS website allows payment by credit or debit card only. You cannot pay by check or cash for online services. Online renewal is available if your license is not suspended or revoked and you meet other eligibility requirements. The online system is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so you can renew at times that suit your schedule without waiting for an office to open.

By-mail renewal also requires payment by check or money order. You mail your application, payment, and any required documents to the address provided on the renewal notice. The Texas DPS recommends using certified mail to track your documents. Processing by mail takes longer than in-person or online renewal, typically four to six weeks.

Third-party vendors and kiosks in some locations accept payment methods similar to DPS offices. Some grocery stores and pharmacies in Texas have license renewal services. These convenient locations often accept the same payment methods as DPS offices, but you should check beforehand since payment options may vary by location.

Military members stationed overseas can renew by mail and pay by check or money order. Active-duty military stationed in Texas can renew at military bases, where payment methods are the same as other locations.

Takeaway: Choose your payment method based on your convenience and preferences. Online and in-person payments are processed faster than by-mail payments, but all methods are available to you.

Additional Fees and Hidden Costs to Know About

Beyond the basic license fee, several additional charges may apply depending on your situation. If you need to take the written driving test, there's no separate fee—it's included in your license cost. However, if you need to retake the test because you failed, you pay the full license fee again. This fee covers one test attempt; additional attempts require paying the full fee each time.

The road test for a new driver also has no separate charge. It's included in the fee for getting your first driver's license. In Texas, teens under 18 applying for their first license must take both a written and road test, but there's no extra charge beyond the standard $16 license fee.

If you need certified copies of your driving record, the Texas DPS charges $5 for each copy. This is separate from license costs and is useful if you need proof of your driving history for insurance, employment, or court purposes. You can order these online, by mail, or in person.

Document services may have additional costs if you lose required paperwork. For example, if you need a new birth certificate to support your license application, you must pay the vital records office
