Understanding Social Security Retirement Benefits

Social Security retirement benefits are monthly payments made to people who have worked and paid Social Security taxes during their working years. The program began in 1935 and has provided income to millions of Americans. To understand how retirement benefits work, it helps to know that Social Security is funded through payroll taxes—both employees and employers contribute 6.2% of wages, and self-employed individuals contribute 12.4%.

The amount of your retirement benefit depends on several factors. Your earnings history is the primary factor—the program looks at your 35 highest-earning years and calculates an average. If you have fewer than 35 years of earnings, zeros are added for missing years, which lowers your average. According to the Social Security Administration, the average monthly retirement benefit for someone who retired at age 66 in 2023 was approximately $1,827. However, this varies significantly based on individual work history and when you choose to start receiving benefits.

The age you begin receiving benefits matters greatly. You can begin receiving reduced benefits as early as age 62, but the amount will be permanently lower than if you wait. For people born in 1943 or later, the full retirement age is between 66 and 67, depending on your birth year. If you delay benefits until age 70, your monthly payment increases significantly—by about 8% for each year you wait after full retirement age. This means someone who waits from age 66 to age 70 receives about 32% more per month for life.

Social Security keeps detailed records of your earnings history. Your Social Security Statement shows your estimated retirement, disability, and survivor benefits based on your current work history. This statement can be viewed online through a personal My Social Security account. Reviewing this information periodically helps you understand what your future retirement benefit might be based on your work so far.

Practical Takeaway: Your retirement benefit amount depends on your earnings history and when you start receiving payments. Creating a My Social Security account allows you to see your estimated benefit amounts under different starting ages, helping you understand your options.

How Social Security Disability Benefits Work

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) provides monthly benefits to workers who have a medical condition that prevents them from working and is expected to last at least 12 months or result in death. This program is separate from retirement benefits, though both come from the same Social Security system. SSDI has helped millions of Americans maintain financial stability when unable to work due to serious health conditions.

To receive SSDI benefits, you must meet strict medical and work-related requirements. The medical requirement means your condition must be severe enough that it prevents substantial work activity. Social Security maintains a list of conditions that automatically meet the medical requirements if the specific criteria for that condition are documented. These include conditions like advanced cancer, complete blindness, severe heart disease, and severe intellectual disability. Even if your condition is not on the list, you may still receive benefits if your medical records show your condition is equally severe.

The work-related requirement involves "work credits." You earn work credits based on your annual earnings—up to four credits per year. Generally, you need 40 work credits total to receive retirement or disability benefits, though younger workers may need fewer credits. For example, a 25-year-old worker might need only 20 work credits to be insured for disability benefits. This means you don't need a lifetime of work history to receive SSDI.

In 2023, the average SSDI benefit was about $1,385 per month. Like retirement benefits, the actual amount depends on your earnings record. Your family members may also receive benefits based on your work record—this could include your spouse, ex-spouse, children under age 19 (or 19 if still in high school), and adult children who became disabled before age 22. However, there is a limit on the total amount a family can receive; typically, family members cannot receive more than 150% to 180% of your primary benefit amount.

Practical Takeaway: SSDI is for workers whose medical conditions prevent substantial work and is expected to last at least 12 months. Understanding the medical and work-credit requirements helps you know whether SSDI might be relevant to your situation.

Survivor Benefits: Protecting Your Family

Social Security survivor benefits provide monthly income to family members of a worker who has died. These benefits have paid nearly $270 billion to families annually in recent years. Many people don't realize that Social Security is not just a retirement program—it also functions as life insurance for workers and their families. If you have earned enough work credits, your family members may receive benefits after your death, regardless of your age.

Your family members who may receive survivor benefits include your widow or widower at age 60 or older (age 50 or older if disabled), your widow or widower at any age if caring for your child under age 16, your unmarried children under age 19 (or 19 if still in high school), your unmarried adult children who became disabled before age 22, and your parents at age 62 or older if they were dependent on you for support. In some cases, an ex-spouse may also receive benefits on your record.

The total amount paid to your family members is limited to between 150% and 180% of what your retirement benefit would have been. Benefits are divided among eligible family members. For example, if the family maximum is $3,000 and you have a widow, two children, and a parent all receiving benefits, that $3,000 would be divided among them. When one family member's benefit ends (such as when a child turns 19), the remaining family members' benefits typically increase.

It's important to understand that survivor benefits begin only after Social Security is notified of your death. Your family should contact Social Security as soon as possible after a death to report it and learn about available benefits. In 2023, about 7.5 million people were receiving Social Security survivor benefits. This protection exists automatically through your work credits—you don't need to purchase anything or complete additional paperwork to create this protection.

Practical Takeaway: Survivor benefits automatically protect your family members if you pass away and have earned sufficient work credits. Your family should contact Social Security after a death to report it and understand what benefits may be available to them.

Work Credits and Your Benefit Amount

Work credits are the foundation of Social Security benefits. To receive any Social Security benefit—whether retirement, disability, or survivor—you must have earned enough work credits through your employment. Understanding how work credits are earned and calculated is essential to knowing whether you may receive benefits.

In 2024, you earn one work credit for each $1,730 of wages or self-employment income, up to a maximum of four credits per year. This amount changes yearly based on increases in average wages. For example, if you earned $6,920 in a year, you would receive four credits for that year. If you earned $3,460, you would receive two credits. You can earn credits only in years when you have income; months don't matter, only your total income for the year.

Most people need 40 work credits to receive retirement or survivor benefits at their full retirement age. This typically requires about 10 years of work. However, if you become disabled or die younger, you may need fewer credits. A 24-year-old worker needs only 18 credits (about 4.5 years of work) to be insured for disability and survivor benefits. At age 31, you need 20 credits. By age 42, you need 20 credits. After age 42 and through retirement age, you need 40 credits.

Your Social Security record tracks your work history and credits. You can view how many credits you've earned by creating a My Social Security account online at ssa.gov. Your Social Security Statement shows your work history and the credits you've earned for each year. It's worthwhile to review this information to ensure your earnings have been recorded correctly. If there's an error, you can take steps to correct it, though this should be done reasonably soon after the error occurs.

Practical Takeaway: Work credits are earned through employment and wages. Checking your Social Security record through a My Social Security account helps you verify your credits have been recorded correctly and understand how close you are to having enough credits for benefits.
