Understanding Skin Tags: What They Are and Why They Develop

Skin tags are small, soft growths that hang from the skin. They are usually flesh-colored or slightly darker and range in size from a few millimeters to about half an inch across. These growths are medically known as acrochordons or fibroepithelial polyps. Skin tags are not dangerous or cancerous, and they do not turn into cancer. However, many people choose to have them removed for cosmetic reasons or because they become irritated by clothing or jewelry.

Skin tags form when skin cells bundle together in areas where the skin rubs against itself or against clothing. They commonly appear in skin folds such as the neck, underarms, groin area, eyelids, and under the breasts. Anyone can develop skin tags, but certain groups of people are more likely to have them. People with obesity, type 2 diabetes, or metabolic syndrome develop skin tags more frequently. Pregnant women often notice new skin tags appearing due to hormonal changes and weight gain. As people age, skin tags become increasingly common, particularly after age 50.

The exact cause of skin tags is not completely understood, but researchers believe they result from friction, hormonal changes, and genetics. If your parents had skin tags, you are more likely to develop them as well. Skin tags are extremely common—studies suggest that up to 46% of the general population may have at least one skin tag at some point in their lives. Despite their frequency, many people are unsure about treatment options or whether they even need treatment.

Practical Takeaway: Skin tags are benign growths that are extremely common and pose no health risk. Understanding what they are and where they typically form helps you recognize when you have one and decide whether removal is right for you. Keep in mind that not all skin growths are skin tags—if you notice any new or changing skin growth, a medical professional should examine it to confirm what it is.

Home-Based Removal Methods: Over-the-Counter Options

Many over-the-counter products claim to remove skin tags at home. These products typically come as creams, solutions, or kits containing various active ingredients. Common ingredients include tea tree oil, salicylic acid, and other plant extracts. These products work by attempting to dry out the skin tag or break down the tissue, causing the tag to fall off over time. However, the scientific evidence supporting these products is limited, and results vary considerably from person to person.

One popular home method involves ligation, which means tying off the skin tag with thread, dental floss, or a specialized band. The idea behind this method is that cutting off the blood supply to the skin tag causes it to die and fall off, usually within one to two weeks. Some people report success with this approach, but there are risks to consider. If the ligation is too tight, it can cause pain, infection, or scarring. If it is not tight enough, the skin tag simply will not fall off. Additionally, attempting to ligate a skin tag on sensitive areas like the eyelid or genitals can lead to complications.

Another home option involves applying apple cider vinegar or other acidic substances directly to the skin tag multiple times per day. Supporters of this method claim that the acidity breaks down the tag over several weeks. Again, scientific research does not strongly support this approach. Some people experience skin irritation or burns from these acidic applications, particularly if they have sensitive skin.

It is crucial to understand that home removal methods carry risks. Infection is a real concern when skin is broken or irritated. Scarring can occur, particularly if you scratch or pick at the area. If you accidentally damage the skin tag in a way that causes bleeding, applying pressure and keeping the area clean is important. Most importantly, before attempting any home removal, you should confirm with a healthcare provider that the growth is actually a skin tag and not something else that requires different treatment.

Practical Takeaway: Over-the-counter products and home methods may work for some people, but results are unpredictable and risks include infection and scarring. If you decide to try a home method, do so only after a healthcare provider has confirmed the growth is a skin tag, and monitor the area closely for signs of infection or excessive irritation.

Medical Office Procedures: Professional Removal Techniques

Healthcare providers offer several professional procedures for removing skin tags. These methods are performed in a medical office and typically take only a few minutes. The most common professional removal method is cryotherapy, also called freezing. In this procedure, the provider applies liquid nitrogen directly to the skin tag, which freezes the tissue. The tag typically falls off within one to two weeks. Cryotherapy is effective for most skin tags and causes minimal scarring. However, it may cause temporary discomfort, and there is a small risk of temporary lightening or darkening of the skin, particularly in people with darker skin tones.

Electrocautery is another popular professional method. This procedure uses electrical current to burn away the skin tag. The provider may use a tool that generates a small electrical pulse at the base of the tag. This method is quick and usually causes minimal bleeding. Because the electrical current cauterizes blood vessels, there is less risk of infection compared to some other methods. Electrocautery may leave a small scar, though it is usually minimal and fades over time.

Surgical excision involves cutting off the skin tag with a surgical blade or scissors, sometimes under local anesthesia. This method is particularly useful for larger skin tags or those in sensitive areas. The provider may use stitches to close the wound, depending on the size and location of the tag. Surgical excision provides immediate results and allows the provider to send tissue samples to a laboratory if there is any question about what the growth is. However, this method has a higher risk of scarring compared to some other options.

Ligation by a healthcare professional is also available in medical offices. The provider ties a special sterile thread or band tightly around the base of the skin tag, cutting off its blood supply. This method is non-invasive and usually painless. The skin tag falls off within one to three weeks. Professional ligation carries lower infection risk than home ligation because sterile materials and techniques are used. Some providers prefer this method because it requires no anesthesia or specialized equipment.

Insurance coverage for skin tag removal varies. Since skin tags are typically considered cosmetic growths rather than medical necessities, many insurance plans do not cover removal. However, if a skin tag is causing physical irritation, bleeding, or infection, or if there is any question about the diagnosis, some insurance plans may cover the procedure. It is worth contacting your insurance provider to ask about coverage before scheduling a procedure.

Practical Takeaway: Professional removal in a medical office is safer and more effective than home methods. Multiple techniques are available, each with different advantages regarding speed, scarring, and comfort. Discuss with your healthcare provider which method is most suitable for the size, location, and number of your skin tags.

Choosing the Right Removal Method for Your Situation

Deciding which removal method to pursue depends on several factors, including the size and location of the skin tag, your skin type, your budget, and your tolerance for potential scarring or discomfort. For a single, small skin tag that is not in a sensitive area, a home method or office cryotherapy may be reasonable options. If you have multiple skin tags, professional removal may be more practical since you can have several removed during one appointment. For skin tags on the eyelids, genitals, or other sensitive areas, professional medical removal is strongly recommended to avoid complications.

Your skin type matters when considering certain procedures. People with darker skin tones may experience temporary or permanent changes in skin color (hypopigmentation or hyperpigmentation) after cryotherapy or other procedures. However, this does not mean you cannot have these procedures—it simply means your healthcare provider needs to know your skin type to adjust the procedure accordingly and explain what to expect. If you have a history of keloid formation (thick, raised scars), discuss this with your provider before choosing a removal method, as some techniques carry higher scarring risk for people prone to keloids.

Cost considerations are also important. Home remedies and over-the-counter products are the least expensive option, typically costing five to thirty dollars. Professional office procedures without insurance coverage usually cost between fifty and three hundred dollars per skin tag, depending on the method and location. Dermatologists may charge more than other types of healthcare providers. If you have multiple skin tags, asking about package pricing for removing several tags at once may reduce the total cost. Some
