When your car stops running unexpectedly, roadside assistance can send a professional to help. The most common services include towing to a repair facility, lockout services when you're locked out of your vehicle, fuel delivery if you run out of gas, battery jump-starts, and tire changes. Some programs also cover winching services if your car is stuck, fuel system issues, and minor mechanical repairs performed on the spot.

Different programs offer different coverage levels. A basic plan might cover only towing to the nearest repair shop within a certain distance, such as 7 miles. A more extensive plan could include towing up to 100 miles or more, multiple service calls per year, and coverage for passengers in your vehicle. Some programs also cover rental vehicle reimbursement while your car is being repaired.

The cost of roadside assistance varies widely depending on what's included. Annual memberships through organizations might range from $50 to $200 per year. Some programs charge per incident, while others charge a monthly fee. Car insurance policies often include roadside assistance as an add-on for a small additional premium.

Practical takeaway: Before choosing a roadside assistance option, list the services that matter most to you—whether that's long-distance towing, fuel delivery, lockout services, or something else. Different programs emphasize different services, so knowing your priorities helps you understand which option might work for your situation.

Types of Roadside Assistance Programs Available

Several different organizations and services offer roadside assistance, each with distinct features and coverage areas. Understanding the differences between them helps you explore what may be available to you.

Motor clubs are organizations dedicated specifically to roadside assistance and travel-related services. The American Automobile Association (AAA) is the largest motor club in the United States, with millions of members. AAA offers different membership tiers—Classic, Plus, and Premier—with varying towing distances and service limits. AAA coverage typically includes towing, lockout services, fuel delivery, battery service, and trip planning resources. Regional motor clubs also operate in specific areas and may offer comparable services.

Insurance companies frequently include roadside assistance as part of their auto insurance policies or as an optional add-on. When roadside assistance is included with your insurance, you typically call your insurance company's claims line to request help. Some insurance companies partner with third-party providers to deliver the actual services. Insurance-based programs are often more affordable than standalone memberships since they're bundled with existing coverage.

Credit card companies sometimes provide roadside assistance as a cardholder benefit. Some premium credit cards include this service at no additional cost to qualifying cardholders. The coverage details vary by card issuer, so checking your card's benefits guide provides specific information about what's covered and how to request services.

Manufacturer roadside assistance comes built into new car warranties. Many car manufacturers provide roadside assistance for a set period after purchase, typically 3-8 years depending on the manufacturer. This coverage is included in the new vehicle purchase and may cover towing, lockout services, fuel delivery, and battery service.

Membership retailers and fuel programs sometimes offer roadside assistance. For example, some warehouse clubs or fuel reward programs include basic roadside assistance as a member benefit, though these programs typically offer more limited coverage than dedicated motor clubs.

Practical takeaway: Check what you already have before purchasing additional coverage. Your car insurance, new car warranty, or credit card may already include roadside assistance. Reading your policy documents or contacting your provider takes just a few minutes and could save you money.

Comparing Coverage Levels and Service Limits

Roadside assistance programs differ significantly in how far they'll tow your vehicle, how many service calls you get per year, and what specific services are included. These differences affect how useful a program will be for your needs.

Towing distance is one of the most important differences between programs. A basic plan might cover towing only 7 miles, which typically gets your car to the nearest repair facility in urban and suburban areas. Mid-level plans usually cover 50-100 miles, which matters if you break down on a highway far from the nearest city. Premium plans may cover 200 miles or more, useful if you travel frequently between distant cities or live in a rural area. Understanding your typical driving patterns helps you determine what towing distance is realistic for you.

Service call limits affect how often you can use the program in a year. Some plans include unlimited service calls, meaning you can request help as many times as needed during the coverage period. Other plans limit you to 4 or 6 calls per year. If your car is older or unreliable, unlimited calls may be worth the extra cost. If you rarely break down, a limited number of calls should be sufficient.

Specific service coverage also varies. All programs cover basic towing, but not all include labor-free lockout services or fuel delivery. Some programs charge extra for certain services or cap the dollar amount they'll reimburse for parts. For example, a battery jump-start might be free at one program but cost $25-50 at another, even with membership.

Geographic coverage matters too. National programs like AAA operate nationwide, so you're covered whether you break down at home or while traveling across the country. Smaller regional programs may only operate within certain states or regions, limiting their usefulness if you travel frequently.

Additional benefits sometimes included are rental car reimbursement, trip interruption reimbursement if you're stranded far from home, locksmith services for home or business locks, and discounts on hotel accommodations or restaurants at participating locations.

Practical takeaway: Create a chart comparing 2-3 programs you're considering. List the towing distance, service call limits, specific services covered, annual cost, and geographic area covered. This side-by-side view makes it easier to spot which program offers the most value for your situation.

When your car breaks down, the first step is to find a safe location. Pull to the side of the road away from traffic if possible, turn on your hazard lights, and stay inside your vehicle with seatbelt fastened. If you're on a highway, staying inside the vehicle is safer than standing outside near traffic. Once you're in a safe spot, locate your membership card, policy documents, or the contact information for your roadside assistance provider.

Call the roadside assistance provider using the phone number on your membership card or insurance documents. Have the following information ready: your name, membership or policy number, location, vehicle details (make, model, year, and color), description of what's wrong with your vehicle, and whether anyone needs medical attention. The more specific you can be about your vehicle's problem, the better the dispatcher can direct the appropriate service to you.

Wait at your vehicle and watch for the service provider to arrive. The dispatcher will typically give you an estimated arrival time. If you feel unsafe waiting outside or the wait is very long, you can sit inside your locked vehicle. Emergency responders and service providers understand that drivers may need to stay in their vehicles for safety. If weather conditions are severe, many providers prioritize getting to you more quickly.

When the service technician arrives, they'll identify themselves and may ask to see your membership card or ID. They'll assess your vehicle's problem and explain what services they can provide on-site and what requires towing to a repair facility. Be clear about where you'd like to be towed if you have a preferred repair shop.

After the service is complete, get documentation of the service call. This becomes important for your records and for any follow-up issues. Take note of the technician's name, what work was done, and the time and date of service. Some programs issue a receipt or confirmation number immediately.

Practical takeaway: Write down your roadside assistance provider's phone number and keep it in your vehicle—in your glove compartment, on a magnet on your dashboard, or as a contact in
