Learn About Renewing Your Expired Passport

Understanding Passport Expiration and Renewal Basics

A passport is an official government travel document that proves your citizenship and identity. Like many documents, passports have expiration dates. U.S. passports issued to adults (age 16 and older) are valid for 10 years, while passports issued to children under 16 are valid for 5 years. Once your passport expires, you cannot use it for international travel, even if you have just one day past the expiration date.

The expiration date appears on the front cover of your passport and is also printed inside on the biographical page. It's written in a month/year format. For example, if your passport says "01/2024," that means it expired in January 2024. Many people don't realize their passports are expired until they try to book a trip or check their documents a few weeks before traveling.

Passport renewal is the process of obtaining a new passport book to replace your expired one. The renewal process differs depending on whether your passport was lost, stolen, or simply expired. Most people with expired passports that were not lost or stolen may use a simpler renewal process than those getting their first passport or replacing a document they no longer have.

The U.S. State Department processes millions of passport renewals each year. According to the State Department, typical processing times vary by season and method. Regular processing can take 6 to 8 weeks, while expedited processing takes 2 to 3 weeks. During peak travel seasons (spring and summer), processing times may be longer because demand increases.

Practical Takeaway: Check your passport expiration date now by looking at the front cover or biographical page. If your passport has expired or will expire within six months and you plan to travel, you may want to begin the renewal process soon. Even if you don't have immediate travel plans, knowing your passport status helps you avoid surprises.

Types of Passport Renewal and Which One You Need

The State Department offers different renewal paths depending on your specific situation. Understanding which type applies to you is important because the wrong approach can delay your new passport or require you to start over.

Standard Renewal by Mail is an option if your passport is expired and you meet these conditions: you were at least 16 years old when it was issued, your passport is undamaged, your name hasn't changed since it was issued (or you can document the change), and you still have your passport book. This method allows you to renew without visiting a passport acceptance facility or agency. You mail your expired passport along with a renewal form, a new photo, and the required fee. This is typically the least expensive option, though it takes longer. Processing usually takes 6 to 8 weeks under normal conditions.

In-Person Renewal is required in certain situations. You must renew in person if your passport was lost or stolen, if your passport is damaged, if your name has changed and you cannot document the reason, if your appearance has significantly changed since the photo was taken, or if you were under 16 when your passport was issued. In-person renewal happens at passport acceptance facilities, which include many post offices, libraries, and county clerk offices, or at passport agencies located in major cities. Processing times for in-person renewal are typically 6 to 8 weeks for regular service or 2 to 3 weeks if you pay for expedited service.

Expedited Service is available for both mail and in-person renewal. This option costs more than standard processing but speeds up the timeline to 2 to 3 weeks. Expedited service does not include the time it takes to mail documents to the State Department and receive your passport back. If you need your passport even faster, some passport agencies offer same-day or next-day service for customers who visit in person, though this is only available at certain locations and typically only during specific hours.

Emergency Passport Service exists for people who need to travel within a very short timeframe due to death, serious illness, or other emergencies in a family. Emergency passports are temporary documents valid for one trip and are issued on the same day or the next business day.

Practical Takeaway: Identify your situation: Is your passport still in your possession and undamaged? Has your name changed? If you have your expired passport and your name hasn't changed, you may use mail renewal, which is the most affordable option. If your passport is damaged, lost, or you have other complications, plan to visit a passport acceptance facility in person.

Step-by-Step Process for Renewing Your Passport by Mail

If you are renewing an expired passport by mail, the process involves gathering documents, completing forms, and sending everything to the State Department. Following each step carefully helps prevent delays or rejection of your renewal request.

Step 1: Gather Required Documents — You will need your expired passport, a completed Form DS-11 or DS-82 (the form depends on your situation; DS-82 is for standard renewals by mail), a new passport photo, proof of citizenship or your expired passport (which serves this purpose), and valid identification. Your passport photo must meet specific requirements: it must be 2x2 inches, taken within the last six months, with a plain white or off-white background, and showing your full face with a neutral expression and eyes open facing the camera. Acceptable forms of identification include a valid driver's license, state ID, military ID, or federal employee ID.

Step 2: Complete the Application Form — Form DS-82 is used for most passport renewals by mail. You can download this form from the State Department website or obtain it at a passport acceptance facility. Fill out all sections completely, using black or blue pen. Print clearly and do not use markers or pencils. Your signature must match the signature in your expired passport. If your name has changed since your passport was issued, you cannot use the mail renewal process and must visit a facility in person.

Step 3: Obtain a New Passport Photo — Have a new photo taken at any location that provides passport photos, such as pharmacies, professional photography studios, or copy centers. Passport photos are typically available within hours and cost between $10 and $20. Keep the digital copy of your photo in case you need to reorder additional prints.

Step 4: Calculate and Prepare Payment — As of 2024, the renewal fee for an adult passport book is $130, plus a $35 service fee (total $165) for standard processing. Expedited processing adds an additional $60 fee. Do not send cash. Instead, pay by check or money order made out to "U.S. Department of State." Include your check or money order in the envelope with your other documents.

Step 5: Mail Your Renewal Package — Place all documents in an envelope and mail to the address provided in the Form DS-82 instructions (addresses vary by state and region). Consider using a tracking method such as certified mail or priority mail with tracking so you can confirm delivery. Keep copies of everything you send for your records. Mailing typically takes several business days, so factor this into your timeline if you have travel planned.

Step 6: Track Your Renewal — The State Department provides a passport status tracker on its website where you can enter your last name and date of birth to check the progress of your renewal. You can check the status starting one week after you mail your application.

Step 7: Receive Your New Passport — Once processed, your new passport will be mailed to you. Standard processing takes 6 to 8 weeks from receipt at the State Department, not including mailing time. Your expired passport will be returned to you along with your new passport, usually with a notch or hole punch to show it is no longer valid for travel.

Practical Takeaway: Create a checklist of all required documents and check them off as you gather them. Set a calendar reminder for one week after you mail your application so you can begin checking the status online. Plan your mailing for at least 8-10 weeks before any international travel to allow time for processing and unexpected delays.

In-Person Renewal: When You Need to Visit a Facility

In-person passport renewal is required when your passport is damaged, lost, stolen, or when other complications exist that prevent mail renewal. The process is different from mail renewal and involves visiting an official passport acceptance
