Learn About Redeeming Gift Cards and Store Credits

Understanding Gift Cards and Store Credits

Gift cards and store credits are payment methods that allow you to make purchases at specific retailers or groups of retailers. A gift card is typically a prepaid card issued by a store or company that holds a specific dollar amount. Store credit, sometimes called in-store credit or a gift certificate, works similarly but may come in physical or digital form. Both represent money deposited with the retailer that you can use toward future purchases.

The key difference between gift cards and store credits often relates to how they're issued and regulated. Gift cards are usually plastic cards that function like debit cards, while store credits might be issued as vouchers, digital codes, or account credits. Some retailers use the terms interchangeably. Gift cards purchased from major retailers are generally subject to state consumer protection laws that outline expiration dates, fees, and usage rules. Store credits issued by retailers—such as those given as refunds or promotional offers—may follow different rules depending on state law and the retailer's policies.

Understanding the distinction matters because redemption processes can differ. A gift card might be swiped at a register like a regular card, while store credit could require entering a code, showing a digital voucher on a phone, or presenting a physical certificate. Some retailers allow customers to check balances online, while others require visiting a store or calling customer service.

Practical takeaway: Before redeeming a gift card or store credit, locate the retailer's information about how their specific cards or credits work. This might be printed on the card itself, available on the retailer's website, or obtainable by calling their customer service line.

Checking Your Gift Card or Store Credit Balance

Knowing how much money remains on a gift card or store credit is essential before making a purchase. Retailers offer several methods to check balances, and the process varies by company. Most major retailers now provide online balance checking through their websites or mobile apps. To use this method, you'll need to locate the card number, which is typically printed on the front or back of a physical gift card. For digital gift cards, the number may be provided in a confirmation email or stored in your retailer account.

Many retailers allow balance checking through their customer service phone lines. When you call, have your gift card number ready. A representative can tell you the current balance and provide information about any restrictions or expiration dates associated with the card. Some retailers also display balance information at the point of sale—meaning you can ask a cashier to check it when you're shopping in person.

For store credits issued as part of a refund or promotion, the process might differ. If the credit was applied to your online account, you may see it in your account dashboard or in an email confirmation. If you received a physical voucher or certificate, check for instructions printed on it. Some retailers tie store credits to your phone number or email address rather than a card number, so you may need to provide that information to check your balance.

Digital gift cards sent via email sometimes include a link to check the balance directly. Before attempting to redeem a digital gift card, verify that the email is from the legitimate retailer's domain—not a suspicious sender—to protect yourself from scams.

Practical takeaway: Use your retailer's official website or phone number to check balances. Never share your gift card or credit information with third-party websites that claim to check balances, as these sites may be fraudulent.

Steps for Redeeming Gift Cards in Store and Online

Redeeming a physical gift card in a store is typically straightforward. When you're ready to make a purchase, bring the gift card to the checkout counter along with the items you want to buy. Inform the cashier that you're paying with a gift card. The cashier will swipe or insert the card into the payment terminal, similar to how a debit or credit card works. The purchase amount will be deducted from your gift card balance. If your purchase exceeds the card's remaining balance, you'll need to pay the difference using another payment method, such as cash, a credit card, or another gift card.

For online purchases, the redemption process varies by retailer. Some online stores allow you to enter the gift card number during checkout, in the same field where you'd normally enter a credit card number. Others may require you to add the gift card to an online account first or apply it as a promotional code. Check the retailer's website for specific instructions—many have a "gift cards" or "payment methods" section that explains how to use them online.

Digital gift cards purchased online may be sent immediately to your email address with a code or link for redemption. These codes can usually be entered during online checkout or, at some retailers, used to make in-store purchases by showing the code on your phone to the cashier. Save the email containing your gift card information and take screenshots as backup in case you lose access to the email.

Partial redemptions are common. If your gift card balance is $50 and you purchase $30 worth of items, the remaining $20 stays on the card for future use. However, if you attempt to use a gift card that's expired or has been deactivated, the retailer's payment system will reject it. In this case, contact the retailer's customer service to determine whether the card can be reactivated or replaced.

Practical takeaway: Before completing a purchase, confirm that the retailer accepts the gift card or credit you want to use. Some retailers accept only their own branded gift cards, while others accept multiple brands. Multi-brand gift cards (such as Visa or Mastercard gift cards) work at many retailers but may carry different rules than store-specific cards.

Expiration Dates, Fees, and Terms You Should Know

Gift card expiration dates and associated fees vary significantly depending on the retailer and your state's laws. Federal law requires that gift cards issued by retailers have an expiration date of at least five years from the date of issuance or purchase. However, state laws may provide stronger protections. Some states prohibit expiration dates entirely, while others allow shorter periods under specific circumstances. Check your state's consumer protection laws or the retailer's terms to learn the expiration policy for cards you own.

Inactivity fees—charges applied when a gift card hasn't been used for a certain period—are regulated in many states. Federal law allows inactivity fees only if the card has been inactive for more than 12 months and the retailer clearly discloses the fee. Some states prohibit inactivity fees altogether or require longer inactive periods before fees apply. If you notice unauthorized fees on a gift card, contact the retailer immediately to dispute them.

Other fees to be aware of include replacement fees if you lose a gift card, balance inquiry fees (though these are less common), and fees associated with transferring a gift card balance. Some retailers charge for these services, while others waive them. The retailer's website or the gift card terms should outline what fees, if any, apply.

Store credit often has different rules than gift cards. Credit issued as a refund typically doesn't expire as quickly as purchased gift cards, though the retailer may set limitations. Promotional store credit may expire sooner than purchased credit. Read the terms provided with any store credit you receive to understand when it must be used.

Practical takeaway: Save receipts or documentation showing when you received a gift card or store credit. This helps you track expiration dates and dispute any fees if necessary. If you receive a gift card as a gift, ask the giver when they purchased it so you know your expiration timeline.

Troubleshooting Issues With Gift Cards and Store Credits

Problems with gift cards and store credits can occur for several reasons. A card might be declined at checkout due to insufficient balance, an expired card, a technical error, or a security lock placed by the retailer. If your gift card is declined, ask the cashier or check online to verify the remaining balance. If the balance appears sufficient, the issue may be technical. Request that the cashier try the card again or use a different payment method and contact the retailer's customer service later to investigate.

If you believe your gift card was lost or stolen, contact the retailer immediately. Many retailers can freeze a card to prevent unauthorized use and may issue a replacement if you can provide proof of purchase or the original card number. Keep receipts from gift card purchases for this reason. For digital gift cards, save confirmation emails in a secure location.

Disputes about expiration dates or unauthorized fees should be directed to the retailer's customer service department. Explain your situation clearly and provide documentation such as purchase receipts or emails
