Learn About Real ID Requirements and Options

What Real ID Is and Why It Matters

Real ID is a federal security standard that sets requirements for state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards. The Department of Homeland Security created this standard after the September 11 attacks to improve security and prevent fraud. States began phasing in Real ID compliance starting in 2010, and the federal government has been gradually requiring Real ID documents for certain purposes.

As of May 7, 2025, all travelers ages 18 and older must present a Real ID-compliant driver's license or identification card to board commercial domestic flights in the United States. This includes flights within the country, but not international flights (which have different requirements). The requirement applies to all passengers, regardless of whether they're traveling to a state they live in or visiting another state.

Real ID compliance means the driver's license or ID card includes specific security features and data that meet federal standards. These features help prevent counterfeiting and identity theft. States must verify certain information before issuing these documents, which creates an additional layer of security compared to older licenses.

Not all states issued Real ID-compliant licenses immediately. Some states took longer to update their systems and printing equipment. However, all 50 states, U.S. territories, and the District of Columbia now issue Real ID-compliant documents. Some states also issue enhanced driver's licenses or identification cards that meet Real ID requirements and provide additional benefits.

Practical takeaway: Check your current driver's license or ID card to see if it displays a gold or black star in the upper right corner. This star indicates Real ID compliance. If your license doesn't have this star, you'll need to obtain a Real ID-compliant document before traveling on commercial flights.

Documents You'll Need to Obtain Real ID Compliance

When you visit your state's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to get a Real ID-compliant license or identification card, you'll need to bring specific documents to verify your identity, citizenship, and residency. The exact documents required vary slightly by state, but federal guidelines establish core categories that all states must follow.

For proving your identity, you'll typically need an original or certified copy of your birth certificate, a valid passport, a passport card, or a permanent resident card (green card). Some states also accept other documents like naturalization certificates or consular reports of birth abroad. You'll need to bring the actual document, not a photocopy, unless the state specifically allows copies.

To prove your Social Security number, most states accept your Social Security card, a tax return, a W-2 form, or a 1099 form. A paystub with your full Social Security number also works in many states. You don't always need to bring the original—states may accept photocopies for this category of documents.

Proof of residency requires documentation showing your current address. Acceptable documents typically include utility bills, lease agreements, mortgage statements, homeowner's insurance policies, or bank statements. These documents must be dated within a certain timeframe (usually 30 to 90 days) and show your current address. Rental agreements, property tax statements, and vehicle registration documents also work in many states.

Additionally, you'll bring your current driver's license or identification card if you have one. Some states may require you to present your documents in person without allowing photocopies for all categories, while other states are more flexible. A few states allow you to mail in your documents for verification, though most require an in-person visit.

Practical takeaway: Before visiting the DMV, check your specific state's website to see the exact list of documents it accepts. States have different rules about which documents qualify in each category, so confirming the requirements beforehand will save you a trip or multiple trips to the office.

How to Get Your Real ID-Compliant License or Card

The process for obtaining a Real ID-compliant driver's license or identification card begins with visiting your state's motor vehicle agency. Most states call this the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), though some states use different names like "Division of Driver Licenses" or "Secretary of State's office." You can find your state's agency by searching online for "[your state name] DMV" or visiting your state government's official website.

Many states now offer the option to schedule an appointment online before visiting in person. Scheduling an appointment typically reduces waiting time and ensures staff are ready to process your application. Some states allow you to start the process online by filling out preliminary paperwork, which you can then bring to your appointment or continue at the office. Check your state's website to see what options are available.

During your visit, you'll present your documents for verification. DMV staff will review each document to confirm you've met the requirements. They may scan or photograph your documents as part of their record-keeping process. You'll answer questions about your address and other personal information to complete the application.

After verification, you'll pay a fee for your new license or identification card. Fees vary by state and typically range from $10 to $75. Some states charge more for enhanced licenses that include additional features beyond Real ID compliance. You may pay with cash, debit card, credit card, or check, depending on your state's payment options.

Once your application is processed, you'll receive your new license or ID card in the mail within a specific timeframe set by your state. Most states deliver the card within 7 to 14 business days, though times vary. Your old license remains valid for personal use (like entering a bank) until your new one arrives, but you won't be able to use it for domestic air travel after the May 7, 2025 deadline.

Practical takeaway: Visit your state DMV's website at least a few weeks before you need to travel by air. Review the document requirements, schedule an appointment if available, and gather your documents in advance so the process moves smoothly.

Real ID Alternatives for Travel and Federal Buildings

Even if you don't obtain a Real ID-compliant driver's license, you have other options for meeting federal requirements for air travel and federal building access. Understanding these alternatives helps you plan according to your situation and preferences.

A valid U.S. passport or passport card serves as one of the most widely accepted alternatives to Real ID. If you already have a passport, you can bring it to the airport instead of a Real ID license. Passports are issued by the U.S. Department of State and meet the same security standards as Real ID. If you don't have a passport but want to obtain one, you can apply through your state's passport acceptance facility or a passport agency office. Processing times vary: regular service typically takes 6 to 8 weeks, while expedited service takes 2 to 3 weeks (for an additional fee).

A permanent resident card (green card) or a REAL ID-compliant license also works for air travel. If you're a lawful permanent resident of the United States, your green card is valid for boarding domestic flights. Some individuals also hold military ID cards, which are acceptable for air travel and federal building access regardless of Real ID status.

Enhanced driver's licenses (EDLs) and enhanced identification cards represent another option. These documents meet or exceed Real ID standards and are available in several states. Enhanced licenses include additional security features and typically cost more than standard Real ID licenses. They're valid for air travel, federal building access, and also for land and sea travel between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean—something standard Real ID licenses don't cover.

For access to federal buildings (not air travel), acceptable documents include a Real ID license, passport, passport card, military ID, federal employee ID, or several other government-issued documents. TSA PreCheck members who have been vetted by the Transportation Security Administration may use PreCheck benefits at airport security, though they still need an acceptable form of ID to board the flight.

Practical takeaway: If you travel internationally or frequently visit Canada or Mexico, an enhanced license or passport may offer benefits beyond what a standard Real ID license provides. If you primarily travel domestically by air, either a Real ID license or passport works fine—choose based on which document you'll have ready when you need it.

Cost, Timeline, and What to Expect

Understanding the costs and timeline for obtaining a Real ID-compliant document helps you plan your application. Costs and processing times vary significantly by state, so checking your specific state's website provides the most accurate information.
