Learn About Reading DOT Codes on Tires

Understanding the DOT Code Basics

The DOT code is a series of letters and numbers stamped on the sidewall of every tire sold in the United States. DOT stands for Department of Transportation, the federal agency that sets safety standards for tires. This code is a manufacturer's identification mark that appears as "DOT" followed by a string of characters, typically between 8 and 13 digits long. The code serves as a permanent record of where and when a tire was made, along with the plant code and tire serial number.

The DOT code was established in 1971 as a way to track tires throughout their lifespan. If a tire is found to have a defect or safety issue, the DOT code allows regulators and manufacturers to identify which tires are affected and where they were distributed. This system has proven valuable in numerous tire recalls over the decades. Every tire manufactured for sale in the United States must have this code, whether it's a passenger vehicle tire, truck tire, or specialty tire.

You'll find the DOT code on the sidewall of your tire, which is the rubber part between the tread and the wheel rim. On some tires, the complete code may appear on the inner sidewall, making it difficult to read without removing the tire from the vehicle. The code is molded directly into the rubber during manufacturing, so it will never wear away or fade over time. Understanding what this code tells you can help you make informed decisions about tire maintenance and replacement.

Takeaway: The DOT code is a permanently molded identifier on every tire that tracks manufacturing information. You can find it by looking at the tire's sidewall, and it won't disappear regardless of how much the tire is used.

Breaking Down the DOT Code Components

The DOT code consists of different sections, each conveying specific manufacturing information. The first two characters following "DOT" represent the tire manufacturer's identification code. This is typically a two-letter combination assigned by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). For example, a code beginning with "BF" might indicate one manufacturer, while "GY" might indicate another. These codes help distinguish between different tire manufacturers and their facilities.

The next two or three characters represent the tire size and type code. This portion identifies the tire's specifications, including its width, aspect ratio, and intended use. For instance, a passenger car tire will have different codes than a light truck tire or a performance tire. This helps quickly identify what category of tire you're examining without needing to read the full sidewall information.

Following the manufacturer and size codes, you'll find the plant code, which is typically one or two characters (a letter or number, or both). This identifies which manufacturing plant produced the tire. Large tire manufacturers often operate multiple plants around the world, and this code tells you exactly which facility made your specific tire. Different plants may have different quality standards or production practices, though all must meet federal safety requirements.

The final component is the tire's production date, which appears as four digits. The first two digits represent the week of the year the tire was manufactured (01-53), and the last two digits represent the year. For example, "2417" means the tire was produced during the 24th week of 2017. Some older tires may have only three digits for the date code, representing the week and year differently.

Takeaway: The DOT code breaks down into the manufacturer ID, tire specifications, manufacturing plant, and production date. Learning to identify each section helps you understand where your tire came from and when it was made.

Reading the Production Date and Tire Age

The production date is one of the most important pieces of information you can extract from a DOT code, particularly for assessing tire safety and condition. Tires degrade over time even when not in use, as the rubber compound oxidizes and hardens. The Rubber Manufacturers Association suggests replacing tires every six years, regardless of tread depth, and the industry recommends a maximum of ten years from the manufacturing date for any tire still in service.

To calculate tire age, look at the last four digits of the DOT code. If you see "3520," this means the tire was manufactured in the 35th week of 2020. To determine how old the tire is now, simply count the weeks that have passed since that production date. A tire from the 35th week of 2020 would be roughly four years old in 2024. This calculation helps you decide whether a tire remains safe to use or should be replaced for safety reasons.

Finding very old tires for sale—sometimes called "deadstock" or "old stock"—is not uncommon, especially at discount tire shops or online retailers. A tire manufactured in 2015 or earlier may appear to have good tread depth but has actually sat in various storage conditions for years. Such tires may have experienced temperature fluctuations, sun exposure, or improper storage that degrades the rubber compound invisibly. It's generally not recommended to purchase or use tires that are more than five or six years old, even if they've never been mounted on a vehicle.

When inspecting tires at a shop or considering a used tire purchase, always check the DOT code date first. Calculate the age and compare it to the current date. If the tire is close to or beyond the six-year mark, continue your search for newer stock. A tire that's been sitting on a shelf for eight years may pose a safety risk, even if the visual appearance suggests otherwise.

Takeaway: The last four digits of the DOT code show when the tire was manufactured. Calculate tire age by determining how many weeks have passed since that date, and consider replacing any tire older than six years or approaching ten years.

Using DOT Codes to Verify Tire Specifications

The DOT code can help you verify that you've received the correct tire specifications for your vehicle. When you order or purchase replacement tires, the shop should install tires that match your vehicle manufacturer's recommendations. These recommendations typically appear on a placard attached to the driver's side door jamb or in your vehicle's owner's manual. The specifications include the tire size, load index, and speed rating, among other details.

By understanding the DOT code, you can confirm before installation that the tires you're receiving match your vehicle's requirements. The size and type code portion of the DOT code (the characters following the manufacturer ID) encodes information about the tire category. While the complete specification is better found on the tire's sidewall markings in a standardized format like "P225/65R17," the DOT code provides a quick cross-reference.

This verification step is particularly important when purchasing tires online or from discount retailers. Before accepting delivery, you can examine the DOT code to confirm the manufacturer, production date, and general specifications. If something doesn't match what you ordered, you can refuse the shipment or request a replacement. This prevents installation of incorrect tires, which could affect your vehicle's handling, fuel efficiency, and safety.

Additionally, if you're buying used tires or tires from a clearance sale, the DOT code helps you confirm you're getting what was advertised. Some sellers may misrepresent tire specifications to make a sale. By reading the DOT code yourself, you gain an independent verification of what you're purchasing. This information empowers you to make confident purchasing decisions without relying solely on a seller's description.

Takeaway: Use the DOT code's manufacturer and specification sections to verify you're receiving the correct tires before installation. This confirmation step protects you from receiving incorrect or misrepresented products.

DOT Codes and Tire Recalls

The primary purpose of the DOT code system is to enable tire recalls when safety defects are discovered. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) maintains a database of all active tire recalls. When a manufacturer or NHTSA identifies a safety issue affecting specific tires, they use DOT codes to identify exactly which products are affected. A recall might target tires from a specific manufacturing plant during a particular time period, or it might affect all tires of a certain model regardless of when they were made.

To check whether your tires are subject to any recalls, you can visit the NHTSA website and search their tire recall database. You'll need to provide information from your DOT code, specifically the manufacturer code and the production date. The database allows you to enter your tire's characteristics and see if there are any active recalls. This information is available to the public at no cost and is updated regularly as new recalls are issued.
