Understanding Different Places to Grow Your Money

When you think about growing your money, you're essentially looking for places where your cash can earn more money over time. This guide explores various locations and methods where your funds might increase in value. The key is understanding how each option works, what risks are involved, and which ones might fit your situation.

Money can grow in many different ways. Some methods involve putting your money into accounts at financial institutions. Others involve purchasing investments like stocks or bonds. Still others involve starting a business or investing in real estate. Each method has different rules about how your money grows, how quickly it can grow, and what happens if things don't go as planned.

According to the Federal Reserve, as of 2024, Americans held approximately $18.2 trillion in savings and investment accounts combined. This shows that millions of people are actively looking for places to put their money to work. The choices people make depend on their goals, how long they can leave the money invested, and how much risk they're comfortable taking.

The concept of money growth relies on several principles. Time is one major factor—the longer your money stays invested, the more opportunity it has to grow. Another factor is the rate of return, which is how much your money increases as a percentage. For example, if you put $1,000 into an account that earns 5% per year, you'd earn $50 in the first year. A third factor is whether your earnings also earn money, which is called compound interest.

Practical Takeaway: Before choosing where to grow your money, write down three things: how much money you have available, how long you can leave it invested, and how comfortable you are with the possibility of losing some of it.

Savings Accounts and Certificates of Deposit

Savings accounts are one of the most straightforward places to keep money while it grows. When you open a savings account at a bank or credit union, you deposit your money and the institution pays you interest. Interest is money the bank pays you for letting them use your funds. The interest rate varies depending on the bank and current economic conditions.

As of December 2024, traditional savings accounts at major banks typically offered interest rates between 0.01% and 0.05% annually. However, online banks and credit unions often offered higher rates, sometimes between 4% and 5.35% per year. This difference matters significantly over time. If you deposited $10,000 in a traditional savings account earning 0.01%, you'd earn only $1 per year. In an online account earning 4.5%, you'd earn $450 in that same year—that's $450 more for the exact same money sitting in an account.

One major advantage of savings accounts is safety. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) protects deposits up to $250,000 per depositor per bank. This means if the bank fails, your money is still protected by the government up to that limit. This protection makes savings accounts one of the lowest-risk places to keep money.

Certificates of Deposit, or CDs, are another option offered by banks and credit unions. With a CD, you agree to leave your money in the account for a set period—typically three months to five years. In exchange, the bank pays you a higher interest rate than a regular savings account. If you withdraw the money before the term ends, you usually pay a penalty. CDs currently offer rates ranging from 4% to 5.5% depending on the term length and institution.

The trade-off with CDs is flexibility versus growth. You earn more money, but you can't access it without losing some earnings. For example, a one-year CD might earn 5% while a five-year CD might earn 5.35%. That extra 0.35% might not seem like much, but on $50,000, it equals $175 extra over five years.

Practical Takeaway: Compare interest rates across at least three different banks or credit unions before opening a savings account or CD. Online banks often offer better rates than brick-and-mortar locations because they have lower operating costs.

Stock Market Investments and Brokerage Accounts

The stock market is a place where people buy and sell shares of companies. When you buy stock, you own a small piece of that company. If the company does well and grows, the value of your stock typically increases. You can sell it for more than you paid, earning what's called a capital gain. Some companies also pay dividends, which are portions of company profits distributed to shareholders.

Investing in individual stocks can be profitable, but it's also riskier than savings accounts. Stock prices go up and down based on company performance, industry trends, and overall economic conditions. For example, if you bought $5,000 worth of stock in a company, that stock could increase in value to $7,000 or decrease to $3,000 depending on how the company performs. You could even lose your entire investment if the company fails.

Many people reduce risk by investing in mutual funds or exchange-traded funds (ETFs) instead of individual stocks. These are baskets containing many different stocks. A mutual fund or ETF might hold 50 to 500 different stocks from various companies and industries. If one company's stock falls, the decline is offset by others. The S&P 500, which tracks 500 large companies, has historically returned about 10% per year on average over the past 90 years, though individual years vary significantly.

To invest in stocks or funds, you need a brokerage account. You open this account at a brokerage firm, deposit money, and then use it to purchase investments. Many online brokerages like Fidelity, Charles Schwab, and others offer accounts with no minimum deposit requirements. Some don't charge commissions or fees to buy and sell stocks and funds.

Time horizon matters greatly in stock market investing. If you invest money you need within the next year or two, stocks might not be appropriate because the market can fluctuate. However, if you're investing money you won't need for 10, 20, or 30 years, stock market investments have historically had strong returns despite short-term ups and downs. A person who invested $10,000 in the S&P 500 in 2000 would have had approximately $67,000 by 2023, even accounting for major market crashes during that period.

Practical Takeaway: If you're new to stock market investing, consider opening a brokerage account and starting with low-cost index funds or ETFs that track the overall market rather than picking individual stocks.

Real Estate and Property Investment

Real estate represents another major category where people grow wealth. Property can increase in value over time through appreciation, meaning the market value rises. Additionally, if you rent out a property, the rent payments provide ongoing income. Real estate investment requires more money upfront than many other options and involves additional responsibilities.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the median home price in the United States was approximately $430,000 in 2024. However, prices vary dramatically by location—homes in rural areas might cost $150,000 while similar homes in major cities could exceed $1 million. Historically, home values have increased by about 3% to 4% annually on average, though this varies by region and time period.

Most people purchase real estate by taking out a mortgage loan. They put down a percentage of the price (typically 10% to 20%) and borrow the rest from a bank. Over 15 to 30 years, they pay back the loan with interest while building ownership equity. For example, someone buying a $300,000 home with a $60,000 down payment borrows $240,000. As they pay the mortgage, they build equity. If the home appreciates to $350,000 over several years, their total wealth in the home has grown by much more than the initial $60,000 investment.

Rental property investment involves purchasing property specifically to rent to tenants. The rental income ideally exceeds the mortgage payment, property taxes, insurance, and maintenance costs, leaving profit. However, rental properties require active management or hiring a property manager, dealing with tenant issues, and handling repairs. A residential rental property might generate $2,000 per month in rent while costing $1,400 in mortgage, taxes, insurance, and maintenance, netting $600 monthly or $7,200 annually.

Real estate also involves risks. Property values can decrease due to
