Learn About Paying Your PEC Electric Bill

Understanding PEC Electric Bill Basics

Pecos Electric Cooperative (PEC) serves parts of Texas and provides electricity to residential and commercial customers. Your PEC electric bill arrives monthly and shows how much electricity you used during the billing period, the rate you pay per kilowatt-hour, and your total amount due. Understanding how to read and pay this bill helps you stay current with your account and avoid service interruptions.

A PEC electric bill typically includes several key sections. The billing date shows when the meter was read. The service period shows the dates your usage covers—usually about 30 days. Your meter number identifies your specific account. The kilowatt-hours (kWh) section displays how much electricity you consumed. Most residential customers receive a bill between 600 and 1,500 kWh monthly, depending on season and usage habits. Winter months often show higher usage in some areas due to heating needs, while summer months may increase due to air conditioning.

The charges section breaks down costs. Energy charges are based on your kWh usage multiplied by your rate per kWh. Delivery charges cover the cost of maintaining poles, lines, and infrastructure. Taxes and surcharges may apply depending on your location and local regulations. Your bill also shows any previous balance you owed and credits applied to your account. Reading and understanding each component helps you spot errors and know exactly what you're paying for.

Practical takeaway: Locate your meter number and billing date on your next bill. Keep several months of bills in a folder so you can track usage patterns over time.

Payment Methods and Where to Pay

PEC offers several payment methods for your convenience. You can pay online through the PEC website using your checking or savings account. This option is available 24 hours a day and allows you to schedule payments in advance. You'll need your account number, which appears on your bill, to access the online payment system. Many customers choose online payment because it provides immediate confirmation and a digital record of their transaction.

Phone payment is another option. You can call PEC's customer service number to make a payment over the phone using a debit or credit card. This method works during business hours and on certain days. Have your account number and payment method ready when you call. Some customers prefer phone payment because they can speak with a representative if they have questions about their bill at the same time.

In-person payment locations include PEC offices and authorized payment centers in your area. You can pay with cash, check, or card at these locations. Many towns served by PEC have local payment centers beyond the main office, making in-person payment more convenient. Paying in person with cash means your payment is immediate, and you receive a receipt on the spot. This method works well if you prefer handling your payment in a physical location.

Mail payment is also available. Write your account number on your check and mail it to the address shown on your bill. Allow 5 to 7 business days for your payment to reach PEC and post to your account. Mail payments typically arrive at a centralized processing center before being recorded in the system. Keep a copy of your check or take a photo before mailing for your records.

Practical takeaway: Identify which payment method works best for your routine. Set a calendar reminder for a few days before your due date to ensure your payment arrives on time, regardless of which method you choose.

Due Dates and Late Payment Consequences

Your PEC bill specifies a due date, typically 20 to 25 days from the billing date. This due date appears prominently on your bill's first page. Paying by the due date keeps your account current and avoids additional charges. If you pay after the due date, PEC may add a late payment fee to your next bill. The amount of this fee varies but typically ranges from $10 to $25 depending on your account size and PEC's current policies.

If you miss the due date by a significant margin, PEC may impose additional consequences. After 30 days past due, your account typically enters a disconnect stage. PEC sends a disconnect notice stating when service may stop if payment isn't received. This notice usually gives you an additional 7 to 10 days to make arrangements. Service disconnection means your electricity is turned off, requiring you to pay not only the past-due amount but also a reconnection fee when you resolve the situation. Reconnection fees typically cost $50 to $150 depending on circumstances.

Late payments can affect your credit report. If PEC reports your delinquent account to credit bureaus, it may lower your credit score and make it harder to obtain loans, mortgages, or credit cards in the future. This negative mark can stay on your credit report for several years. Some credit bureaus report accounts as delinquent after 30 or 60 days past due, so the timing varies.

PEC may offer payment plans if you're unable to pay your full bill by the due date. These arrangements allow you to split your payment into smaller amounts over several weeks or months. Payment plans require contacting PEC directly to discuss your situation. The company evaluates each request individually, and approval isn't certain, but plans are often available for customers experiencing temporary hardship.

Practical takeaway: Mark your due date on a calendar immediately after receiving your bill. If you're concerned about making a payment on time, contact PEC before the due date to discuss options rather than waiting until after the deadline.

Assistance Programs and Payment Options for Low-Income Customers

PEC and other organizations offer programs that may help low-income customers pay their electric bills. The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is a federal program that provides one-time bill payment assistance to qualifying households. LIHEAP is administered through local agencies in each state, and application processes vary by location. You can find LIHEAP contact information through your county social services office or by searching online for "LIHEAP" plus your county name.

The Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) is another federal program that may help with utility bills. Local community action agencies administer CSBG funds and determine who may receive assistance. These agencies often combine LIHEAP and CSBG funding to help more households. Contact your local community action agency to learn about programs in your area.

State programs vary by location. Texas has several programs specifically designed to help Texans with utility costs. The Texas Energy Assistance Program (TEAP) is one example, though availability depends on funding and your location. Some utility companies, including cooperatives, have their own bill assistance programs. PEC may have a hardship program or emergency assistance fund—contact the company directly to ask about what's available.

Non-profit organizations sometimes offer utility bill assistance. United Way chapters, Catholic Charities, Lutheran Social Services, and local non-profits frequently help residents pay utility bills, especially during winter months. Search online for "utility assistance" plus your city or county name to find local organizations. Many have application processes and limited funding, so applying early in the assistance season increases your chances of receiving help.

Budget billing is a payment arrangement that smooths out monthly costs. Rather than paying different amounts each month based on usage, you pay approximately the same amount every month throughout the year. This works by averaging your previous 12 months of usage. Budget billing doesn't reduce what you pay overall—it simply spreads costs evenly. This option can help customers manage their money more predictably. Contact PEC to learn if budget billing is available in your area.

Practical takeaway: If you're struggling to pay your bill, contact PEC's customer service department before the due date. Ask about payment plans, hardship programs, and budget billing options. Also research LIHEAP and local non-profits that serve your area—these organizations often have funds available and can explain how their programs work.

Managing Your Usage to Control Costs

Understanding how usage affects your bill helps you make decisions about energy consumption. Your kilowatt-hour usage is multiplied by your rate per kWh to calculate your energy charge. If your rate is $0.12 per kWh and you use 1,000 kWh in a month, your energy charge would be $120 before taxes and delivery charges. Reducing usage by 10 percent would lower that charge to $108, saving $12 that month or about $144 annually. Even small usage reductions accumulate over time.

Heating and cooling typically account for 40 to 60 percent of residential electricity usage. During summer, air conditioning is often the largest energy consumer. Adjust
