Learn About Pancreas Health and Function

What Your Pancreas Does in Your Body

The pancreas is a small but vital organ that sits deep in your abdomen, tucked behind your stomach. Most people don't think about their pancreas until something goes wrong, but understanding what this organ does helps you make better choices about your health. Your pancreas has two main jobs that are completely different from each other, but equally important.

First, your pancreas works as an endocrine gland, which means it produces hormones that regulate your blood sugar levels. The most famous of these hormones is insulin. When you eat food, especially carbohydrates, your blood sugar rises. Your pancreas detects this change and releases insulin, which helps your cells absorb that glucose for energy or storage. Without insulin, glucose would build up in your bloodstream and cause serious health problems. The pancreas also produces glucagon, another hormone that does the opposite job—it tells your body to release stored glucose when your blood sugar drops too low, such as between meals or during exercise.

Second, your pancreas works as an exocrine gland, meaning it produces digestive enzymes. These enzymes travel through ducts into your small intestine, where they break down fats, proteins, and carbohydrates into smaller pieces your body can absorb. Without these enzymes, your digestive system would struggle to extract nutrients from food. Your pancreas produces about 1.5 liters of digestive juice daily to support this process.

The pancreas has about 1 million clusters of hormone-producing cells called islets of Langerhans. Within these clusters, beta cells produce insulin and delta cells produce glucagon. This internal regulation system keeps your blood sugar in a healthy range throughout the day and night. When this system works properly, most people don't notice it. But when the pancreas struggles to produce enough insulin or when cells don't respond to insulin properly, serious conditions like Type 2 diabetes can develop. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 37 million Americans have diabetes, and many cases begin with pancreatic function changes.

Practical Takeaway: Your pancreas performs two distinct roles—hormone production for blood sugar control and enzyme production for digestion. Both functions are essential for your survival and overall health. Recognizing these roles helps you understand why pancreatic health matters and why doctors monitor pancreatic function through tests.

Understanding Blood Sugar Regulation and Insulin

Your body maintains a delicate balance with blood sugar, and your pancreas is the key player in this balancing act. When you eat a meal, especially one containing carbohydrates, your digestive system breaks down those carbs into glucose. This glucose enters your bloodstream, and sensors in your pancreas detect the rising blood sugar levels. Within minutes, beta cells in your pancreas spring into action and release insulin.

Insulin works like a key that unlocks cells throughout your body so glucose can enter. Your muscle cells need glucose for energy during physical activity. Your brain uses glucose constantly—about 20 percent of your body's energy goes to your brain alone. Your liver stores excess glucose as glycogen for later use. Without insulin facilitating this process, glucose stays trapped in your bloodstream, unable to reach the cells that need it.

The normal fasting blood sugar range—meaning the level when you haven't eaten for at least eight hours—is 70 to 100 mg/dL (milligrams per deciliter). After eating a meal, your blood sugar naturally rises to perhaps 140 mg/dL, and your pancreas responds with insulin to bring it back down. This happens hundreds of times per day, constantly adjusting to what you eat and how active you are. This remarkable regulation system keeps your blood sugar in a healthy range without you ever thinking about it.

However, several things can disrupt this balance. A high-sugar diet, physical inactivity, and excess weight can cause your cells to become insulin resistant, meaning they don't respond as effectively to insulin signals. When this happens, your pancreas works harder, producing more and more insulin trying to manage blood sugar. Over time, the beta cells become exhausted, and insulin production may decline. This progression often leads to prediabetes, where blood sugar is higher than normal but not yet in the diabetes range. Without changes, prediabetes frequently progresses to Type 2 diabetes.

The American Diabetes Association notes that about 88 million American adults have prediabetes, but fewer than 15 percent know they have it. This is significant because prediabetes can be reversed or managed through lifestyle changes. Eating balanced meals with whole grains, lean proteins, and vegetables; exercising regularly; and maintaining a healthy weight all help your pancreas work more efficiently and improve insulin sensitivity.

Practical Takeaway: Understanding how your pancreas releases insulin in response to food helps explain why consistent, balanced eating patterns and regular physical activity support pancreatic health. If you have risk factors for diabetes—such as family history, being overweight, or being over 45 years old—asking your doctor about blood sugar screening can detect problems early when they're easier to manage.

Signs Your Pancreas May Not Be Working Properly

Your pancreas often works quietly in the background, but when something goes wrong, your body sends signals. Recognizing these warning signs early can make a significant difference in outcomes. One of the most common signs of pancreatic stress is excessive thirst and frequent urination. When blood sugar stays elevated because your pancreas isn't producing enough insulin or your body isn't using insulin effectively, your kidneys try to eliminate excess glucose through urine. This pulls water from your tissues, making you thirsty and causing you to urinate more often than usual, sometimes even waking you up multiple times at night.

Unexplained fatigue is another signal many people miss. When your cells can't access glucose effectively because of insulin problems, your body doesn't get the fuel it needs, leaving you constantly tired. You might notice this fatigue persists even after adequate sleep. Blurred vision can also occur because high blood sugar affects the lens of your eye, changing its shape and making focus difficult. Some people notice they need new glasses more frequently when blood sugar problems develop.

Slow-healing cuts and infections are worth paying attention to. High blood sugar impairs your immune system's ability to fight infections and affects blood circulation, so even minor cuts take longer to heal. You might also experience numbness or tingling in your hands or feet, which indicates nerve damage from prolonged high blood sugar. Weight changes can signal pancreatic issues too—unexplained weight loss, despite eating normally, may suggest your body can't properly process and use nutrients. Conversely, sudden weight gain despite no change in eating habits might indicate insulin resistance.

If your pancreas isn't producing enough digestive enzymes, you might notice oily or fatty stools, chronic diarrhea, or difficulty absorbing nutrients. Some people develop recurring stomach pain or bloating. Chronic pancreatitis—long-term inflammation of the pancreas—causes upper abdominal pain that may radiate to the back, often worsening after eating fatty foods.

It's important to know that having one or two of these symptoms doesn't automatically mean pancreatic disease. Many conditions cause similar symptoms. However, if you notice a pattern of these signs, talking with your doctor about getting screened makes sense. Your doctor can order simple blood tests—such as fasting glucose, hemoglobin A1c, or fasting insulin levels—to assess how your pancreas is functioning.

Practical Takeaway: Pay attention to persistent changes in your body like unusual thirst, fatigue, or slow-healing wounds. Write down when you notice these symptoms and what you were doing when they occurred. This information helps your doctor understand what's happening and whether pancreatic function testing would be helpful.

Conditions That Affect Pancreatic Health

Several medical conditions can damage or impair your pancreas. Type 2 diabetes is by far the most common pancreatic condition in the United States. It develops when your body becomes resistant to insulin or your pancreas can't produce enough insulin to meet your body's needs. Unlike Type 1 diabetes, which is an autoimmune condition usually diagnosed in childhood, Type 2 develops gradually, often over many years. The American Diabetes Association reports that about 90 to 95 percent of all diabetes cases are Type 2. Risk factors include age over 45, being overweight, physical inactivity, family history of diabetes, and certain racial or ethnic backgrounds.
