Learn About Ordering Custom License Plates

Understanding Custom License Plate Basics

Custom license plates are personalized vehicle registration plates that display letters and numbers of your choice, rather than the standard random assignment from your state's Department of Motor Vehicles. Instead of receiving a plate like "ABC 1234," you might request something like "FAST CAR" or "DR SMITH" depending on your state's rules and availability. These plates serve the same legal function as standard plates—they identify your vehicle and prove registration—but they reflect your personal preferences.

Custom plates have been available in the United States since the 1970s, and today all 50 states offer some form of personalized plate program. The earliest custom plate programs began as a way to generate additional revenue for states while giving vehicle owners a way to express individuality. Today, millions of vehicles display custom plates across the country. The plates are manufactured the same way as standard plates and must meet all federal and state visibility and reflectivity standards, so they're equally legal and valid for all purposes.

Most states charge an additional fee beyond standard registration costs for custom plates. This fee typically ranges from $25 to $150 per year, depending on your state. Some states offer both traditional custom plates and specialty plates designed to support specific causes or organizations, such as wildlife conservation or veteran support. Understanding the different types available in your state is the first step in the process.

Practical takeaway: Custom plates are legal, regulated personalized vehicle plates available in all 50 states. They cost more than standard plates but serve the same registration purpose while displaying your chosen text.

How State DMV Systems Review Custom Plate Requests

Each state maintains its own rules about what text can appear on a custom plate. These rules exist to prevent offensive language, impersonation of government officials, and confusion with existing plates. When you request a specific text combination, your state's Department of Motor Vehicles reviews it against these standards. The review process is typically automated first—a computer system checks the requested text against a database of banned words and combinations. If the text passes the automated review, it may then be reviewed by a person who evaluates it for context and meaning.

The standards vary significantly by state. Some states prohibit any words that could be considered offensive or vulgar, while others apply stricter standards. Most states prevent requests that look like they're trying to impersonate law enforcement, government agencies, or medical professionals. For example, you generally cannot request "STATE POLICE" or "FBI AGENT." States also prevent requests that duplicate existing plates or are too similar to existing plates, which could cause confusion during traffic stops or when checking registration.

The review timeline varies by state but typically takes anywhere from a few days to several weeks. Some states show you whether your requested text is available through their online system before you make a formal request. This saves time because you can check multiple options instantly. Other states require you to submit a formal request and pay the fee before they review your text choice. If your requested text is denied, most states will explain the reason and allow you to submit a different request, sometimes without an additional fee for the second attempt.

Practical takeaway: States screen custom plate requests to prevent offensive text, impersonation, and confusion. Check your state's specific rules before requesting, as standards differ by location.

State-Specific Rules and Restrictions You Should Know

California allows up to seven characters on standard custom plates and has one of the largest pools of available combinations. The state prohibits any text that, in the judgment of the DMV, is vulgar or offensive. New York allows up to eight characters and permits numbers, letters, and specific symbols. Texas permits customization on most plate types and allows up to six characters for regular custom plates. Florida allows up to seven characters and is known for having relatively accessible rules. Each of these states maintains an online search tool where you can check whether a specific combination is available before submitting a formal request.

Some states impose character limits that affect what you can request. Illinois limits custom plates to six characters, while Vermont allows up to seven. Washington State allows up to seven characters but has specific rules about spacing and symbol use. These character limits matter because they affect what messages or names you can fit on your plate. A seven-character limit might accommodate a last name plus one number, but a six-character limit requires more careful planning.

Many states offer different types of custom plates beyond basic personalization. These include specialty plates that support causes (wildlife conservation, state universities, veterans organizations) or commemorate themes (state pride, sports teams). These specialty plates often have partial text that cannot be changed—for example, a university plate might always include the school logo or name—but allow you to customize the remaining characters. Specialty plates sometimes cost more than basic custom plates but support specific causes. Understanding which plate types your state offers helps you choose an option that matches your goals.

Certain combinations are permanently unavailable in most states due to past decisions or legal requirements. For example, single-letter or single-number plates are typically reserved and unavailable. Plates that spell out "DISABLED" or "HANDICAP" may be reserved for official disabled parking plates. Drug-related terms, even if technically not vulgar, are commonly denied. Each state publishes its list of unavailable or reserved combinations, which you should review before selecting your preferred text.

Practical takeaway: Review your specific state's character limits, available plate types, and content restrictions before selecting your custom text. Most states provide online tools to check availability and specific rules.

The Process for Ordering Custom License Plates

The ordering process begins with checking availability through your state's DMV website. Most state DMV systems have a dedicated section for custom plate requests with a search tool. You enter your desired text combination, and the system immediately tells you whether it's available or already taken. This step is free and requires no registration or payment. Testing multiple combinations helps you find text that's available and meets your state's standards. Write down a few backup options in case your first choice is unavailable.

Once you've identified an available combination, you proceed to the formal request. This typically involves creating or logging into an account on your state's DMV website. You'll provide your vehicle information, including your current license plate number, vehicle identification number (VIN), and current registration details. You'll confirm the custom text you want to order, and you'll review the additional fee your state charges for custom plates. Most states accept online payment through credit card or debit card at this stage. Some states allow you to order in person at a DMV office instead.

After you submit your order and payment, your state's DMV reviews your request. This review process checks your text against content standards and verifies that the combination is still available. If approved, your custom plate is manufactured and mailed to you, or you may be able to pick it up at a DMV office. The entire process typically takes two to four weeks, though this varies by state. Some states send your new plate by mail to your registered address, while others require you to visit a DMV location to collect it. You'll receive notification when your plate is ready for pickup or has been shipped.

Once you receive your custom plate, you must install it on your vehicle following your state's placement requirements. Most states require the plate to be mounted on the front and back of your vehicle, though some allow front-only placement. Your plate must be clearly visible, unobstructed, and properly illuminated at night. Your old plate should be removed and may need to be returned to the DMV, depending on your state's requirements. Some states accept old plates to be discarded or recycled at home, while others require you to submit them.

Practical takeaway: Order custom plates through your state's DMV website by checking availability, entering vehicle information, and paying the additional fee. Allow two to four weeks for manufacturing and delivery.

Costs, Renewal, and Ongoing Requirements

Custom plate fees vary considerably by state and sometimes by plate type. Basic custom plates typically cost between $25 and $75 above your standard registration renewal fee, while specialty custom plates may cost $50 to $150. Some states charge a one-time custom plate fee when you first order, then charge the same additional amount each time you renew your vehicle registration. Other states charge a lower renewal fee but include higher initial fees. A few states offer custom plates for the same cost as standard plates, making personalization no more expensive than ordinary registration.
