Learn About Lockdown Browser Installation Steps

Understanding What Lockdown Browser Is and Why It's Used

Lockdown Browser, officially called Respondus LockDown Browser, is software that educational institutions use to monitor students during online exams. Schools, colleges, and universities install this program on student computers to create a controlled testing environment. The software restricts what students can do on their computers while taking an exam—it prevents opening other applications, accessing the internet outside the exam platform, or using certain keyboard functions that might allow cheating.

The program was created to address concerns about academic integrity in distance learning. When students take tests online from home or other locations, schools cannot physically observe them. Lockdown Browser attempts to solve this problem by controlling the computer environment. The software locks down the computer so thoroughly that students essentially cannot interact with anything except the exam itself.

Many institutions adopted this software during the expansion of online education, particularly after 2020. Colleges use it for proctored exams in online courses. Some high schools and testing centers also use it. The software works across different operating systems—Windows computers and Mac computers can both run it. However, it's worth noting that Lockdown Browser alone doesn't monitor what students are doing; many schools pair it with a webcam monitor called Respondus Monitor that records students during exams.

Understanding this software matters if you're a student who needs to use it for classes. Knowing what it does and how it works can reduce confusion and help you prepare properly for exams. Many students encounter Lockdown Browser without understanding its purpose or limitations, which can lead to problems during testing. This guide explains the installation process and what to expect.

Practical takeaway: Before installing Lockdown Browser, confirm that your school actually requires it for your courses. Check your course syllabus or contact your instructor, since not all online classes use this software. This prevents installing unnecessary software on your computer.

System Requirements and Compatibility Checks Before Installing

Before attempting to install Lockdown Browser, you need to verify that your computer meets the minimum requirements. The software has specific technical needs, and older computers or certain operating systems might not support it properly. Checking compatibility first prevents installation problems and failed exams.

For Windows computers, Lockdown Browser requires Windows 7 or later. The software needs at least 100 MB of free hard drive space. Your computer should have a modern processor—older computers with very limited processing power may experience performance issues. The RAM requirement is modest; even computers with 2 GB of RAM can run it, though more RAM provides better performance.

Mac users need macOS 10.5 or later to run Lockdown Browser. Like the Windows version, it requires approximately 100 MB of storage space. Mac computers with Intel processors work reliably, though support for newer Apple Silicon Macs (computers with M1, M2, or M3 chips) continues to expand but sometimes has compatibility issues.

An internet connection is essential during installation and exam-taking. Lockdown Browser communicates with the exam server to verify that the exam environment is secure. If your internet connection drops during an exam, the software typically locks the exam until connection is restored. Testing your internet connection stability before exam day is important.

You should also check whether your school uses the basic Lockdown Browser or the combination with Respondus Monitor (which includes webcam recording). Some schools use just the browser lock; others add the proctoring camera component. Knowing which version you need prevents confusion during setup.

Practical takeaway: Run the system compatibility check tool on Respondus' website before beginning installation. This tool scans your computer and reports whether your system meets requirements. It takes about two minutes and can save hours of troubleshooting later.

Step-by-Step Installation Process for Windows Computers

The installation process for Lockdown Browser on Windows computers follows a standard software installation pattern. Your school's learning management system (like Canvas, Blackboard, or D2L) typically provides a link to the installation file. You may also access it through Respondus' website directly if your institution has provided you with the download link.

First, locate the installation file. If your school provided a link through your course or learning management system, click that link. If downloading directly from Respondus, visit the official Respondus website and look for the section on Lockdown Browser downloads. The file will be named something like "LockdownBrowser-Setup.exe." Save this file to a location you can easily find—most people save it to their Desktop or Downloads folder.

Once the installation file is saved, double-click it to begin the installation wizard. Windows may ask for permission to allow this program to make changes to your computer. Click "Yes" to continue. The installation wizard will then open and display the software license agreement. Read through this carefully, as it explains what the software does and doesn't do. You must check the box indicating you accept the terms before proceeding.

The installer will ask where you want to install the software. The default location is usually fine—this is typically "C:\Program Files\Respondus" or similar. Don't change this unless you have a specific reason to do so. Click the install button and wait while the files copy to your computer. This typically takes 2-5 minutes depending on your computer's speed.

Once installation completes, Windows may ask to restart your computer. Some versions of Lockdown Browser require a restart for certain features to work properly. Even if it's not required, restarting is a good idea to ensure everything initializes correctly. After restart, you should see a Lockdown Browser icon on your desktop or in your start menu.

Practical takeaway: Install Lockdown Browser at least 24 hours before your exam, not the morning of the test. This provides time to troubleshoot any issues with your school's IT support rather than dealing with technical problems while testing.

Installation Process for Mac Computers and Troubleshooting Common Issues

Mac installation follows a similar but slightly different process than Windows. Your school's learning management system or the Respondus website provides a download link for the Mac version. Look for a file named "LockdownBrowser.dmg" or similar. Click the link to begin downloading.

When the download completes, a window typically opens showing the Lockdown Browser icon and a folder icon. To install, drag the Lockdown Browser icon into the Applications folder. Alternatively, you can double-click the installer and follow the installation wizard. The process is faster than Windows—usually 1-2 minutes for file copying.

On newer Macs, you may see a security warning because the software isn't from the official Apple App Store. Click "Open" or "Install" to proceed past this warning. You'll likely need to enter your Mac password to authorize the installation. This is normal security procedure for Mac computers.

Some Mac users experience issues after installation, particularly with the webcam component (Respondus Monitor). If your webcam isn't recognized, try unplugging the webcam and reconnecting it after installation completes. If the program won't open, restart your Mac entirely. For M1 or M2 Mac users, Respondus has released updated versions that work better on Apple Silicon chips, so update to the latest version if you're using a newer Mac.

A common issue for all users is that antivirus software or firewalls sometimes block Lockdown Browser. If you get error messages about network connections, check your firewall settings. You may need to add Lockdown Browser to your firewall's allowed programs list. Contact your school's tech support for specific instructions, as different schools use different network configurations.

Storage space is rarely an issue, but if you're running very low on hard drive space (less than 200 MB available), the installation may fail. Free up space by deleting large files or temporary files, then try installing again.

Practical takeaway: For Mac users experiencing problems, create a test exam session before your real exam. Most schools allow students to practice with a sample exam using Lockdown Browser. This identifies problems while you can still contact support.

Configuring Settings and Running Your First Test Launch

After installation, Lockdown Browser is ready to use, but you should configure it and run a test before your actual exam. Open the application by clicking its icon on your desktop or finding it in your applications. The first time you launch it, you may need to enter your school's course ID or exam code if your school requires it. Your instructor provides this information.
