Learn About Jetty Deposits and How They Work

What Are Jetty Deposits and Their Basic Purpose

A jetty deposit is a buildup of sand, silt, and sediment that forms along the sides and ends of jetties—man-made structures built into water bodies to control water movement and protect coastlines. Understanding jetty deposits begins with knowing what jetties are and why they exist. Jetties are long, narrow barriers typically made of rock, concrete, or wood that extend from the shore into the ocean, bay, or river. They serve important purposes like protecting harbors, creating navigation channels, and reducing erosion along beaches.

When a jetty is constructed, it changes how water moves. This altered water flow causes sediment that would normally travel along the shoreline to get trapped. Over time, sediment accumulates on the updrift side of the jetty—the side facing the direction sediment naturally moves. On the downdrift side, the opposite happens: the water scouring action can create deeper channels and cause erosion. This process is entirely natural and predictable, occurring at virtually every jetty system worldwide.

Jetty deposits grow at different rates depending on several factors. Coastal areas with high sediment supply—such as areas near river mouths or with significant wave action—may see deposits grow several feet per year. In other locations, growth is much slower. The Port of New York and New Jersey jetty system experiences notable sediment deposition, requiring regular maintenance dredging to keep navigation channels open. Similarly, jetty systems along the Pacific Coast frequently accumulate sediment at rates of 2 to 5 feet annually in some areas.

Practical takeaway: Recognizing that jetty deposits form through natural processes helps explain why coastal management often requires ongoing maintenance and why some beaches appear to grow while others nearby shrink.

How Sediment Transport Creates Jetty Deposits

Sediment transport along coastlines is a continuous process driven by waves, currents, and tidal action. Sand and silt move along beaches in what coastal scientists call "longshore drift" or "littoral drift." This movement happens because waves strike the shoreline at an angle, pushing sediment in a consistent direction. The amount of sediment moving this way varies greatly by location—some coastlines experience minimal drift, while others move millions of tons annually.

When a jetty blocks the natural path of sediment movement, the sediment doesn't disappear—it collects against the jetty structure. This accumulation happens because the jetty disrupts the water flow patterns that normally keep sediment moving. On the updrift side, water slows down as it encounters the jetty, causing suspended sediment to settle out and pile up. The deposited material includes sand (the largest component), fine silt, clay particles, and sometimes small shells and organic matter.

The physics behind this process involves understanding how flowing water carries sediment. Faster-moving water can suspend larger particles and transport them over long distances. When water speed decreases—which happens when it hits a jetty—larger particles fall to the bottom first, creating a natural sorting of sediment. This is why jetty deposits often show distinct layers: coarser sand at the bottom and progressively finer material toward the top. Engineers studying jetties measure these deposits using bathymetric surveys (underwater mapping) to track how much sediment accumulates over time.

Research from the U.S. Geological Survey shows that sediment transport rates along the Atlantic Coast average between 50,000 and 500,000 cubic yards per year, depending on the specific location. A single jetty can intercept a significant portion of this natural movement, creating substantial deposits within a few years of construction.

Practical takeaway: Understanding sediment transport helps explain why jetty deposits form predictably and why coastal engineering projects often produce unintended consequences on nearby beaches.

The Updrift and Downdrift Effects of Jetties

One of the most important concepts in understanding jetty deposits involves the distinction between updrift and downdrift sides. The updrift side is the direction from which sediment naturally travels, while the downdrift side is where sediment would normally go if the jetty weren't there. This creates two very different environments on either side of a single jetty structure.

On the updrift side, sediment accumulates rapidly, building beaches and creating shallow water areas. This can actually be desirable in some situations—communities have sometimes welcomed the beach growth that occurs on the updrift side of jetties. However, this accumulation must be managed carefully because excessive buildup can create navigation hazards and alter the natural beach profile. Some locations use the accumulated sediment for beach nourishment projects, removing it from the jetty deposit area and moving it downdrift where it's needed.

On the downdrift side, the opposite problem occurs. Without the sediment that would normally replenish the beach, erosion accelerates. Water flowing around the jetty often scours the bottom, creating deeper channels and removing sand that beaches need. This phenomenon has caused significant erosion problems in communities located downdrift of major jetty systems. The Santa Monica Bay in California experienced notable beach erosion following jetty construction, losing substantial amounts of sand annually. Similarly, the Indian River Inlet in Delaware created erosion concerns on the downdrift side when the jetty was first constructed.

Engineers recognize this as the "jetty erosion paradox"—a structure built to protect one area often creates problems for another. The Santa Cruz Harbor jetty system in California deposits sediment on its updrift side while causing erosion problems several miles downdrift. This has led to ongoing debates about jetty management and whether the benefits of having a protected harbor outweigh the downdrift erosion costs.

Practical takeaway: Jetty impacts extend far beyond the immediate structure, making it important to consider both sides when evaluating how a jetty affects a broader coastal area.

Measuring and Monitoring Jetty Deposits

Coastal engineers and environmental scientists use various methods to measure how jetty deposits grow and change over time. Accurate measurements are essential for planning maintenance activities, predicting future changes, and managing coastal resources effectively. The primary tools used include bathymetric surveys, aerial photography analysis, and sediment coring.

Bathymetric surveys use sound waves to map the underwater topography around jetties. A boat equipped with specialized sonar equipment travels in grid patterns across the area, measuring water depth at thousands of points. By comparing surveys taken at different times—often annually or every few years—scientists can calculate exactly how much sediment has accumulated. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers regularly conducts these surveys at major jetty systems to track deposits and plan dredging operations. Results show that deposits can increase elevation by 5 to 15 feet over a decade in high-sediment environments.

Aerial photography and satellite imagery provide another monitoring method. By comparing photos taken over months or years, analysts can track visible changes in beach and deposit areas. High-resolution satellite data from services like Landsat or Sentinel has made this process more precise and cost-effective. The imagery clearly shows where sediment has accumulated as lighter-colored, shallow-water areas compared to darker, deeper water.

Sediment coring involves drilling into the deposit to extract samples showing the composition and layering of accumulated material. These cores reveal information about sediment sources, transport history, and deposit ages. Scientists can determine whether sediment came from offshore, from a nearby river, or from upcoast beaches by examining the grain size, mineral composition, and fossil content of each layer.

Monitoring data collected by the U.S. Geological Survey and the Corps of Engineers shows that major jetty systems in the United States accumulate deposits at widely varying rates. Some systems deposit 100,000 cubic yards annually, while others exceed 500,000 cubic yards per year. This variation depends on local wave climate, river sediment supply, tidal range, and jetty design.

Practical takeaway: Regular monitoring provides the data needed to predict changes and plan necessary adjustments to coastal infrastructure.

Managing and Mitigating Jetty Deposit Problems

Because jetty deposits create both benefits and challenges, coastal managers have developed several strategies to work with these natural processes rather than against them. These approaches recognize that jetty deposits are inevitable but can be managed through various techniques.

Dredging is the most common management strategy. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dredges approximately 400 million tons of material annually from U.S. waterways, with a significant portion coming from jetty deposit areas. Dredging maintains navigation channels by removing accumulated sediment that would otherwise
