Learn About Internet and WiFi Differences

What Is the Internet and How Does It Work?

The internet is a global network of computers and devices connected together to share information. Think of it like a massive postal system, but instead of mail traveling through trucks and planes, digital information moves through cables, fiber optics, and wireless signals. When you send an email, watch a video, or browse a website, your data travels from your device through various networks until it reaches its destination and comes back to you.

The internet operates through a system of servers—computers that store websites, emails, and other data—and your personal devices that request and receive that information. Your device connects to an Internet Service Provider (ISP), which is a company that owns the infrastructure to connect you to the larger internet. Major ISPs in the United States include Comcast, AT&T, Verizon, and Charter. These companies maintain the physical cables and equipment that make internet connections possible.

The actual transmission of data happens through different types of connections. Broadband is a general term for high-speed internet connections. There are several types of broadband: cable internet uses the same lines as television service, fiber-optic internet transmits data through thin glass strands that carry light, DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) uses standard telephone lines, and satellite internet beams data from space-based satellites. Each type has different speeds and availability depending on where you live.

Speed is measured in Mbps (megabits per second). The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) defines broadband as at least 25 Mbps for downloading and 3 Mbps for uploading. However, different activities require different speeds. Checking email might only need 1 Mbps, while streaming video in high definition requires 5-8 Mbps, and video conferencing works best with 2.5-4 Mbps per direction.

Practical Takeaway: Understanding internet basics helps you recognize why your connection speed matters and what type of connection might work best for your needs. Check your current internet speed by searching "speed test" online—this shows you what your ISP is actually delivering to your home.

What Is WiFi and How Is It Different From the Internet?

WiFi is a wireless technology that allows devices to connect to the internet without using cables. This is an important distinction: WiFi is not the internet itself. WiFi is like a bridge that connects your device to your internet service. You can have internet service without WiFi (using a wired connection instead), and you can have WiFi that connects to internet service, or even WiFi that only connects devices to each other without reaching the internet at all.

WiFi works by converting your internet signal into radio waves that travel through the air. A device called a WiFi router receives the internet signal from your ISP and broadcasts it wirelessly. Your phone, laptop, or tablet has a WiFi receiver that picks up these radio waves and converts them back into a signal your device can use. WiFi operates on specific radio frequencies—typically 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz bands. The 2.4 GHz band travels farther but is slower, while the 5 GHz band is faster but has a shorter range.

The key difference between internet and WiFi is this: internet is the service (the actual connection to websites and online services), while WiFi is the method of connecting to that service. You could connect to the internet using a wired Ethernet cable plugged directly into your router, but you wouldn't be using WiFi. Conversely, WiFi without internet simply creates a local network where devices can communicate with each other but cannot access websites or online services.

WiFi networks can be secured with passwords to prevent unauthorized access, or left open for public use. Most home and business WiFi networks use security protocols like WPA2 or WPA3, which encrypt your data so others cannot intercept it. Public WiFi networks in coffee shops, libraries, and airports typically don't require a password but also don't encrypt your information, which is why it's generally not recommended to handle sensitive matters like banking on public WiFi without additional security measures.

Practical Takeaway: Remember that having a WiFi router doesn't mean you have internet—you still need an ISP. And having internet service without a router means you'd need to use a wired connection. Test your WiFi by moving your device to different rooms to see where the signal is strongest, as physical distance and obstacles like walls affect WiFi performance.

Understanding Internet Speed, Bandwidth, and Data Limits

Internet speed refers to how quickly data travels from the internet to your device (download speed) and from your device to the internet (upload speed). Download speed matters most for activities like streaming, downloading files, and loading websites. Upload speed matters when you send files, video call, or post content online. Both are measured in Mbps. According to the FCC, as of 2024, approximately 21 million Americans still lack access to broadband service meeting current standards.

Bandwidth is different from speed—it's the total amount of data that can pass through your connection at one time. Think of speed as how fast a car travels, and bandwidth as how many lanes the highway has. You might have a fast internet connection, but if your bandwidth is limited, multiple devices using the network simultaneously will slow things down for everyone. Home internet plans typically offer between 50 Mbps and 1,000 Mbps, depending on your location and ISP.

Data limits are caps that some ISPs place on how much data you can use monthly. For example, an ISP might offer unlimited data, or they might limit you to 1 terabyte (1,000 gigabytes) per month. Streaming video uses significant data—one hour of HD video uses approximately 3 gigabytes. Data limits are more common with satellite internet and some mobile hotspot services than with cable or fiber connections. If you exceed your data limit, your ISP may charge overage fees or slow your speed for the remainder of the month.

WiFi speed can be affected by several factors beyond your internet service quality. The distance between your device and the router, physical obstacles like walls or metal objects, interference from other electronic devices, and the number of devices connected all impact WiFi speed. A device right next to a router might receive 100 Mbps while the same connection 50 feet away through several walls might only receive 20 Mbps. This is normal and expected.

Practical Takeaway: Check your internet bill or contact your ISP to find out your plan's download and upload speeds, and whether you have any data limits. For most household activities like streaming and video calls, 25-100 Mbps is sufficient. If you have multiple people using the internet simultaneously, consider plans offering higher speeds.

Types of Internet Connections Available

Cable internet uses the same coaxial cables that deliver television service to your home. These cables can transmit both TV signals and internet data simultaneously. Cable internet speeds typically range from 50 Mbps to 500 Mbps, though some newer systems offer higher speeds. Cable internet is widely available in urban and suburban areas and is generally reliable. The main disadvantage is that your speed can slow during peak usage hours when many people in your area are online simultaneously, since all users share the same infrastructure. According to FCC data, cable internet serves approximately 56 million Americans.

Fiber-optic internet transmits data through thin strands of glass using light pulses. This technology offers the fastest speeds currently available to consumers, often exceeding 1,000 Mbps. Fiber is also the most reliable and consistent, with less variation during peak hours. However, fiber infrastructure is expensive to install, so it's primarily available in newer developments and dense urban areas. Only about 42 million Americans have access to fiber internet as of 2024, though this number is growing.

DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) uses existing copper telephone lines to deliver internet service. DSL speeds are typically slower than cable or fiber, ranging from 5 Mbps to 35 Mbps, and speeds vary significantly depending on your distance from the provider's facility—farther distances mean slower speeds. However, DSL is widely available in rural areas where other options may not exist. DSL service is often less expensive than other options and doesn't experience the same peak-hour slowdowns as cable since each customer has a dedicated line.

Satellite internet beams data from orbital satellites, making it available virtually everywhere including remote rural areas. However, satellite internet typically has higher latency (delay), which means there's a noticeable lag between sending a request and receiving a
