The Congregate Meals Program operates at various senior centers and community locations throughout Horry County. Seniors gather at designated sites to share meals together. These aren't just places to eat—they're social hubs where participants connect with peers, engage in conversation, and often participate in activities or entertainment. Congregate meal sites typically serve lunch and sometimes breakfast, with menus planned to meet nutritional guidelines for older adults. The program operates several days per week at multiple locations, making it possible for seniors from different parts of the county to participate.

For seniors who have difficulty leaving home, the Home-Delivered Meals Program (often called "Meals on Wheels") brings prepared meals directly to residences. This service is particularly valuable for people with mobility limitations, those recovering from illness, or individuals living alone. Volunteers typically deliver meals on weekdays, providing not just food but also a friendly check-in. Regular contact through meal delivery can provide peace of mind for family members and alert service providers if a senior needs additional support.

The nutrition programs in Horry County work to provide balanced meals that meet dietary guidelines for older adults. Meals typically include a protein source, vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and dairy or dairy alternatives. The programs can often accommodate special dietary needs, including diabetic-friendly options, low-sodium meals, and vegetarian selections. Participants should discuss any dietary restrictions or preferences when enrolling in a program.

Additionally, Horry County's senior programs often connect participants with information about nutrition, food safety, and healthy eating. Some senior centers offer cooking classes or nutritional education workshops led by registered dietitians or nutritional specialists. Practical Takeaway: Contact your local senior center or the Horry County Area Agency on Aging to learn about meal program locations, schedules, and how the programs operate. If you're interested in congregate meals, visit a site to experience the social aspect firsthand. If home delivery appeals to you, ask about the intake process and typical delivery schedules in your neighborhood.

Drivers are trained to assist passengers, and the services operate at times convenient for seniors, including early morning hours for medical appointments.

The HART (Horry Area Regional Transit) system serves the greater Myrtle Beach area and operates fixed-route bus service throughout the county. While not exclusively for seniors, many older adults use public buses for getting around. HART offers reduced fares for passengers age 65 and older with valid identification. Understanding bus routes that serve your neighborhood, shopping areas, medical facilities, and senior centers can increase your transportation options. The transit authority provides route maps, schedules, and customer service to help riders learn the system.

These classes address the specific needs of aging bodies, focusing on flexibility, balance, strength, and cardiovascular health. Common offerings include chair aerobics (exercise performed while sitting), water aerobics in pools, gentle yoga, tai chi, and walking groups. Mental health support is an important component of wellness services.
