Learn About Home Care for Intestinal Worms

What Are Intestinal Worms and How Do People Get Them?

Intestinal worms are parasites that live inside the human digestive system. They survive by feeding on nutrients from the food you eat or from your blood. There are several types of intestinal worms that can infect people, including roundworms, hookworms, tapeworms, and whipworms. Each type has different characteristics and causes different symptoms in infected people.

According to the World Health Organization, more than 1.5 billion people worldwide have intestinal worm infections. In the United States, intestinal worm infections are less common than in developing countries, but they still occur. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that millions of Americans may be infected with certain types of intestinal parasites without knowing it.

People get intestinal worms through different routes depending on the type of worm. Common ways of transmission include eating undercooked or contaminated meat, drinking water that contains worm eggs or larvae, walking barefoot on contaminated soil, and poor hand hygiene after using the bathroom. Roundworms and hookworms often spread through contact with soil. Tapeworms typically spread through eating raw or undercooked beef, pork, or fish. Some worms can spread from person to person through direct contact or shared contaminated objects.

Children are at higher risk for intestinal worm infections because they play in soil and may not practice good hand hygiene. People who travel to areas with poor sanitation also face increased risk. Those with weakened immune systems may experience more severe infections. Pet owners can also be at risk, since some worms that infect animals can infect humans.

Practical takeaway: Understanding how worms spread helps you take steps to prevent infection. Focus on hand washing after bathroom use, before eating, and after outdoor activities. Cook meat to safe internal temperatures and wash produce before eating.

Recognizing Symptoms of Intestinal Worm Infections

Intestinal worm infections can cause a wide range of symptoms, though some people have no symptoms at all. The symptoms that develop depend on the type of worm, how many worms are present, how long the infection has lasted, and the overall health of the infected person. Symptoms may appear anywhere from a few days to several weeks after infection.

Common symptoms of intestinal worm infections include stomach pain and cramping, diarrhea or loose stools, constipation, nausea and vomiting, fatigue and weakness, loss of appetite, and weight loss. Some people experience visible worms in their stool or see worms in vomit. Allergic reactions to worms can cause itching around the anal area, hives on the skin, or swelling in the face and lips. In cases of heavy infection, people may experience anemia, protein deficiency, or developmental delays in children.

Different worm types produce different specific symptoms. Hookworms can cause a red, itchy rash where larvae penetrated the skin. Roundworms sometimes cause a dry cough or wheezing if worms migrate to the lungs. Tapeworm infections may cause nutrient deficiencies because the worms absorb vitamins directly from food passing through the intestines. Whipworm infections often cause bloody diarrhea and rectal pain.

It is important to note that many people with mild worm infections experience no symptoms at all. This is why people who have traveled to areas with poor sanitation or have other risk factors may benefit from testing even without symptoms. Children may show signs of stunted growth or poor school performance as a result of chronic worm infections that reduce nutrient absorption.

Practical takeaway: Keep a record of any digestive symptoms that last more than a week or two, especially if they occur after travel or potential exposure. Mention these symptoms to your doctor so they can determine whether testing is necessary.

When to See a Healthcare Provider About Possible Infection

Knowing when to contact a healthcare provider about a possible intestinal worm infection helps ensure prompt diagnosis and treatment. You should contact your doctor if you experience persistent digestive symptoms like diarrhea, constipation, or abdominal pain that lasts longer than two weeks without an obvious cause. You should also seek care if you see worms or worm segments in your stool or vomit.

Tell your doctor about potential exposures that increase infection risk. These exposures include recent travel to countries with poor sanitation, work that involves contact with soil, regular contact with people who have worm infections, or living in an area known to have higher rates of intestinal parasites. If you have young children in daycare who have been diagnosed with parasites, you may want to get tested as well, since some worms spread easily in group settings.

People with symptoms of anemia—such as extreme fatigue, pale skin, shortness of breath, or dizziness—should mention possible parasite exposure to their doctor. Severe infections can cause significant nutrient loss and blood loss, leading to anemia. Young children showing signs of poor growth, developmental delays, or chronic poor nutrition may benefit from parasite testing, especially if they live in high-risk areas or have traveled internationally.

When you visit your healthcare provider, be prepared to describe your symptoms in detail, including when they started, how often they occur, and whether they are getting worse or better. Describe any recent travels, the countries or areas visited, what activities you did there, and the dates of travel. Mention any family members or close contacts who have been diagnosed with parasites. Tell your doctor about any medications you take and any other health conditions you have, since these factors affect both testing and treatment.

Practical takeaway: Write down your symptoms and when they started before your appointment. Include information about travel dates and locations. This information helps your doctor decide whether parasite testing is appropriate.

Testing and Diagnosis Process for Intestinal Worms

Diagnosing intestinal worm infections typically involves testing stool samples under a microscope. Your healthcare provider will likely ask you to provide one or more stool samples collected at home. The samples are then sent to a laboratory where specialists examine them for worm eggs, larvae, or worm segments. This test is called a stool examination or fecal examination. Multiple samples collected on different days may be needed because worms do not always shed eggs consistently every day.

For some types of worms, blood tests can provide useful information. A blood test can show signs of infection through antibodies your body has produced in response to the parasites. Blood tests may also reveal anemia or other nutritional deficiencies caused by the infection. However, blood tests alone cannot usually identify which type of worm is present, so stool examination remains the primary diagnostic method.

In cases where standard stool tests do not show results but symptoms continue and infection is still suspected, doctors may order additional testing. Colonoscopy or endoscopy allows a doctor to directly view the intestines and take tissue samples for examination. Imaging tests like ultrasound or CT scans can sometimes show signs of worm infections, particularly if the infection is severe or worms have migrated to unusual locations.

The diagnostic process typically takes a few days to a couple of weeks from the time you provide samples until you receive results. Laboratory technicians carefully examine stool samples under high-powered microscopes, looking for distinctive eggs or other worm parts. Different worm species produce eggs with distinct sizes and shapes, which helps technicians identify which type of infection is present. Once the results are available, your doctor will discuss findings and recommend appropriate treatment options based on the specific worm type and severity of infection.

Practical takeaway: When your doctor requests stool samples, follow the collection instructions carefully and provide samples on the days requested. Timing matters because worm egg shedding varies, and multiple samples increase the likelihood of accurate diagnosis.

Home Care Strategies for Managing Intestinal Worm Infections

Once a doctor has confirmed an intestinal worm infection and prescribed medication, home care focuses on supporting treatment, managing symptoms, and preventing reinfection. The most important step is taking prescribed medications exactly as directed by your healthcare provider. Anthelmintic medications kill worms or paralyze them so they pass from your body in stool. Medications vary depending on worm type, and some require multiple doses spread over days or weeks for maximum effectiveness.
