Learn About Healthcare Career Paths and Programs

Overview of Healthcare Career Paths

The healthcare industry is one of the largest employment sectors in the United States, with the Bureau of Labor Statistics reporting that healthcare occupations are projected to grow by 16 percent from 2021 to 2031—much faster than the average for all occupations. This growth means thousands of job openings will become available across many different roles. Healthcare careers span a wide range of educational levels, from positions requiring a high school diploma to those requiring advanced degrees.

Healthcare careers typically fall into several main categories. Clinical roles involve direct patient care and include nurses, physicians, therapists, and technicians. Administrative roles support the operations of healthcare facilities and include medical records specialists, billing coordinators, and office managers. Support roles assist clinical staff and keep facilities running smoothly. Research and development positions focus on improving treatments and medications. Public health roles work at the community and population level to prevent disease and promote wellness.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, healthcare and social assistance added over 500,000 jobs in 2022 alone. Within this broad field, specific occupations vary dramatically in pay, educational requirements, and day-to-day responsibilities. For example, a phlebotomist may complete a certificate program in six months to one year, while a surgeon completes four years of medical school plus five to seven years of specialized residency training. Understanding this diversity helps individuals find paths that match their interests, timeline, and goals.

The healthcare field also offers career progression opportunities. Many people start in entry-level positions and advance to supervisory, management, or specialized clinical roles. For instance, someone might begin as a nursing assistant, earn their registered nurse (RN) credential, and later pursue a master's degree to become a nurse practitioner or nurse manager. This ladder structure means healthcare careers can adapt as your goals and circumstances change.

Practical Takeaway: Research specific healthcare roles that interest you by looking at job descriptions on sites like Indeed, LinkedIn, or the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook. Note the required education, typical salary ranges, and job growth projections for roles that appeal to you.

Entry-Level Healthcare Positions and Requirements

Entry-level healthcare positions are often the gateway into the industry and typically require minimal prerequisites beyond a high school diploma or equivalent. These roles provide valuable experience and allow workers to explore whether they enjoy healthcare work before pursuing additional education. Many entry-level positions also offer on-the-job training or employer-sponsored education programs.

Common entry-level healthcare positions include medical assistants, nursing assistants (also called certified nursing assistants or CNAs), patient service representatives, and phlebotomists. Medical assistants perform administrative and clinical tasks in medical offices, such as scheduling appointments, taking patient history, and preparing patients for examinations. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, medical assistants earned a median annual wage of $35,850 in 2021. Nursing assistants work under the supervision of nurses in hospitals and care facilities, helping patients with activities like bathing, dressing, and moving. CNAs typically complete a state-approved training program lasting four to twelve weeks.

Patient service representatives, sometimes called patient access specialists, work at the front desk of healthcare facilities. They check patients in, verify insurance information, and answer phones. This role requires strong communication skills and computer proficiency but usually no medical background. Phlebotomists draw blood samples for testing and typically complete a certificate program lasting four to eight weeks.

Many entry-level positions offer clear pathways to advancement. For example, a nursing assistant can pursue additional education to become a registered nurse. A medical assistant might specialize in a particular area like cardiology or pediatrics, or pursue credentials such as Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA). Some healthcare facilities offer tuition reimbursement programs that help employees earn certifications or degrees while working.

Entry-level healthcare work also teaches valuable skills. You learn how healthcare systems operate, gain exposure to different specialties, develop patient care experience, and build professional networks. Many people who eventually become doctors, nurses, or other healthcare professionals started in entry-level roles.

Practical Takeaway: If you are considering healthcare but uncertain about a specific path, look into entry-level training programs in your area. Many community colleges and vocational schools offer short certificate programs (four weeks to one year) that can position you for immediate employment and future advancement.

Nursing and Advanced Nursing Credentials

Nursing is one of the largest healthcare professions, with the Bureau of Labor Statistics reporting 4.3 million registered nurses employed in the United States as of 2022. Nursing offers multiple entry points and numerous specialization options, making it a flexible career path. Nurses work in hospitals, clinics, home care, schools, occupational health settings, and many other environments.

There are several nursing credentials with different education requirements. A Registered Nurse (RN) can enter the field through one of three educational pathways: a four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), a two-year Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN), or a three-year Diploma in Nursing from a hospital-based program. All RNs must pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) to become licensed. The median annual wage for registered nurses was $77,600 in 2021, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. A Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) completes a shorter program, typically lasting 12 to 18 months, and performs more limited clinical tasks under RN supervision. The median wage for LPNs was $48,070 in 2021.

Beyond the RN credential, nurses can pursue advanced degrees and specializations. A Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) typically requires two additional years of education and prepares nurses for roles such as Nurse Practitioner (NP), Clinical Nurse Specialist, Nurse Educator, or Nurse Manager. Nurse Practitioners have greater independence in clinical decision-making and can prescribe medications in many states. Some nurses pursue a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), which is becoming increasingly common for advanced practice roles.

Nursing also offers numerous specialization options. Specialties include critical care, pediatrics, oncology, psychiatric mental health, emergency nursing, and gerontology (caring for older adults). Many specializations require additional certification beyond the basic RN license. For example, Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) certification demonstrates expertise in intensive care settings.

The nursing field currently faces significant workforce shortages. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing reports that nursing schools turned away nearly 80,000 qualified applications in 2021 due to lack of faculty and resources. This shortage creates strong job demand and often translates to signing bonuses, flexible scheduling, and educational support from employers.

Practical Takeaway: Compare the three pathways to becoming an RN (BSN, ADN, and Diploma) by researching programs in your area. Consider the time commitment, cost, and whether your local employers prefer one credential over another. Many nurses start with an ADN and later complete their BSN part-time while working.

Allied Health Professions and Technical Roles

Allied health professions make up a significant portion of the healthcare workforce. These roles typically require one to four years of education and do not involve prescribing medications or performing surgery independently. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, allied health occupations are growing rapidly, with physical therapy assistants and medical technologists among the fastest-growing positions.

Physical therapy is one major allied health area. Physical Therapists (PTs) earn a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree, which typically requires three years of graduate education plus prerequisites. PTs help patients recover function and mobility after injury or surgery. Physical Therapy Assistants (PTAs) complete a two-year Associate degree and work under PT supervision, performing therapeutic exercises and treatments. The median annual wage for PTs was $91,010 in 2021, while PTAs earned a median of $60,380.

Occupational Therapy is another major field. Occupational Therapists (OTs) complete a master's or doctoral degree program and help patients develop skills for daily living and work. Occupational Therapy Assistants complete a two-year program. Respiratory Therapists help patients with breathing problems and typically complete a two-year respiratory therapy program. They work with patients using ventilators, perform breathing treatments, and conduct lung function tests. The median wage for respiratory
