Learn About Getting a Debit Card

What Is a Debit Card and How Does It Work

A debit card is a plastic payment card that draws money directly from your bank account when you use it to make a purchase. Unlike a credit card, which borrows money that you pay back later, a debit card uses funds you already have. When you swipe, insert, or tap your debit card at a store or online retailer, the transaction goes through an electronic system that instantly transfers money from your checking or savings account to the merchant.

The debit card system relies on networks like Visa, Mastercard, or your bank's own network to process transactions. These networks connect your bank, the store's bank, and payment processors to complete the exchange in seconds. Your bank assigns you a personal identification number (PIN) that you enter at checkout to verify you are the cardholder. Some transactions, like online purchases or contactless payments, may not require a PIN.

Most debit cards come with a 16-digit card number, an expiration date, and a security code on the back. You can use your debit card at millions of locations worldwide—grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants, hotels, and online retailers. You can also withdraw cash from automated teller machines (ATMs) using your debit card and PIN. According to the Federal Reserve, Americans made over 90 billion debit card transactions in 2022, making debit cards one of the most common payment methods in the country.

One key difference between debit and credit cards is fraud protection. Federal regulations protect debit card users, but the rules differ slightly from credit card protections. If someone uses your debit card without permission, report it to your bank as soon as possible. Your liability depends on how quickly you report the fraud—reporting within two business days typically limits your loss to $50, while waiting longer may expose you to greater losses.

Practical Takeaway: A debit card is a direct-payment tool that lets you spend money from your bank account instantly. Understanding how it works—from the PIN verification to the electronic network processing—helps you use it safely and track your spending accurately.

Types of Debit Cards Available

Not all debit cards are the same. Banks and financial institutions offer different types based on your needs, age, and account status. The most common type is the standard debit card, which comes with a checking account at a bank or credit union. When you open a checking account, your bank typically provides a standard debit card at no cost. This card works anywhere that accepts Visa, Mastercard, or your bank's network logo.

Prepaid debit cards are another major category. These cards are not linked to a bank account. Instead, you load money onto the card beforehand, and you can spend only what you have loaded. Prepaid cards do not require a credit check and do not report activity to credit bureaus. People use prepaid cards for budgeting, giving money to family members, or as an alternative when they do not have a bank account. Prepaid cards typically charge fees for loading money, monthly maintenance, or ATM withdrawals, so review the fee schedule before choosing one.

Teen or youth debit cards are designed for minors and young adults. Parents can monitor spending and set limits on how much money their child can use per day or transaction. These cards teach financial responsibility and let parents track where their child is spending money. Banks like Chase, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo offer youth accounts with debit cards. Some come with parental controls and spending alerts sent via text message or app notification.

Government benefit debit cards are issued by state and federal agencies to deliver benefits like unemployment insurance, child support, or tax refunds. These cards function like standard debit cards but are pre-loaded with benefit money on a schedule set by the program. Veterans' benefits, Social Security payments, and workers' compensation can all be deposited onto government-issued debit cards.

Specialized debit cards exist for specific purposes, such as FSA (Flexible Spending Account) cards used for health expenses or transit cards used for public transportation. Some employers offer payroll debit cards that deposit paychecks directly onto the card. Virtual debit cards, generated through banking apps, exist only in digital form and are used for online shopping without sharing your physical card number.

Practical Takeaway: Debit card options range from standard bank cards to prepaid, youth, and specialized cards. Identifying which type matches your situation—whether you need to build a banking relationship, control spending, or receive government benefits—helps you choose the right card for your circumstances.

Requirements and Information for Getting a Debit Card

The requirements for getting a debit card vary depending on the type and issuer. For a standard debit card linked to a checking account, you must open an account with a bank or credit union. Most banks require you to be at least 18 years old, though some allow minors if a parent or guardian co-signs. You will need to provide a valid government-issued ID, such as a driver's license or passport, to verify your identity. Banks use this information to comply with federal anti-money laundering laws.

You will also need to provide your Social Security number (SSN). Banks use your SSN to check the ChexSystems database, which tracks banking history and reports accounts closed due to fraud or unpaid overdrafts. If you have a history of overdrafts or fraud, some banks may deny you. However, second-chance banking accounts exist specifically for people with damaged banking histories. Credit unions and community banks sometimes have more lenient policies than large national banks.

For prepaid debit cards, requirements are generally simpler. Most prepaid cards require only a name, address, and phone number. Some require a Social Security number for tax purposes. Many prepaid card companies do not run background checks or review banking history. This makes prepaid cards accessible to people new to banking or those rebuilding their financial history. However, prepaid cards require you to load money upfront before you can use them.

Teen debit cards require parental involvement. A parent must open the account and provide their identification and Social Security number. The parent becomes the account owner, and the teen user receives a linked card with spending controls. Age requirements vary—some banks allow teen accounts starting at age 13, while others require age 16 or older.

Government benefit debit cards typically do not require you to "open" anything. When you qualify for a benefit program, the government agency or contractor automatically issues a debit card. You simply receive it in the mail. No formal application process with the card issuer exists because the government administers the card program.

Practical Takeaway: Getting a debit card requires providing identity verification and, in most cases, your Social Security number. Understanding what information each card type requires helps you prepare documents and choose the option that fits your situation, whether you have an established banking history or are starting fresh.

Fees and Costs Associated with Debit Cards

Many standard debit cards issued by banks have zero annual fees. When you open a checking account, the bank typically provides a debit card at no charge as part of the account. However, your checking account itself may have monthly maintenance fees, which typically range from $5 to $15 per month. Some banks waive monthly fees if you maintain a minimum balance, set up direct deposit, or use online banking. Credit unions often charge no monthly fees for checking accounts, making them a lower-cost option.

Overdraft fees occur when you spend more money than you have in your account. A typical overdraft fee ranges from $25 to $35 per transaction. If you overdraft multiple times in one day, you may be charged multiple fees—sometimes called "stacking." Federal regulations now limit overdraft fees, and many banks offer overdraft protection that transfers money from a savings account or linked account to cover the shortfall instead of charging a fee. Some banks offer a certain number of free overdrafts per year before charging fees.

ATM fees vary widely. Using an ATM owned by your bank is typically free. Withdrawing from an ATM belonging to another bank often costs $2 to $3 per transaction. Some banks reimburse out-of-network ATM fees, particularly for premium checking accounts. If you frequently use ATMs, choosing a bank with a large ATM network or a credit union that participates in shared branching networks can save you money.

Prepaid debit cards carry more fees than standard bank debit cards. Typical charges include activation fees ($5 to $10), monthly maintenance fees ($5 to $10), ATM withdrawal fees
