Understanding Gastric Balloon Treatment in Compton

A gastric balloon is a medical device designed to help people manage their weight by taking up space in the stomach. The balloon is placed inside the stomach through the mouth using a thin, flexible tube called an endoscope. Once positioned, the balloon is filled with saline solution, which makes a person feel fuller faster and with smaller meal portions. This sensation of fullness can help reduce the amount of food someone eats each day.

The gastric balloon procedure differs from weight loss surgery because it is temporary and reversible. Most balloons remain in place for six months, though some versions may stay longer or shorter depending on the specific device and medical recommendations. Unlike surgical weight loss procedures that permanently alter the stomach or intestines, the balloon can be removed completely, returning the stomach to its original size and function.

Gastric balloons have been used in medical settings since the 1980s, and several FDA-approved versions are currently available in the United States. These include the Orbera balloon, the ReShape Duo, the Obalon system, and the Spatz3 balloon. Each device has slightly different characteristics regarding how it is placed, how long it stays in the body, and how it functions. Medical facilities in Compton and the surrounding area may offer one or more of these options.

People choose gastric balloon treatment for various reasons. Some use it as a stepping stone before committing to more permanent surgical options. Others prefer it because it does not involve cutting into the stomach or changing the digestive system permanently. The procedure may be considered by individuals who have not found success with diet and exercise alone, or who want to avoid the risks and recovery time associated with surgical weight loss procedures.

Practical Takeaway: Before exploring gastric balloon options in Compton, understand that a balloon works by creating a physical sensation of fullness, is temporary in nature, and requires commitment to behavioral changes during and after the six-month period. Learning how the device functions will help you have informed conversations with healthcare providers about whether this approach matches your goals.

Types of Gastric Balloons Available

The Orbera balloon is one of the most widely used gastric balloon systems in the United States. It is a single balloon made of silicone that is filled with 400 to 700 milliliters of saline solution depending on individual tolerance. The Orbera balloon is placed endoscopically, meaning the doctor guides it through the mouth into the stomach without making any surgical cuts. The procedure typically takes about 20 to 30 minutes. The balloon remains in the stomach for approximately six months, after which it is removed in a similar outpatient procedure.

The ReShape Duo system uses two balloons instead of one, which may provide additional fullness and stability within the stomach. Like the Orbera, it is placed through an endoscope and filled with saline solution. The ReShape Duo is designed to stay in place for six months. Some patients report that having two balloons creates a different sensation of fullness compared to a single balloon, though individual experiences vary.

The Obalon system takes a different approach by using multiple smaller balloons—typically three—that are swallowed rather than placed through an endoscope. Each balloon is swallowed in a capsule that is attached to a thin catheter. Once in the stomach, the doctor inflates each balloon using the catheter, which is then removed. The Obalon system may appeal to patients who prefer to avoid endoscopy. The balloons typically remain in place for three months.

The Spatz3 balloon is notable because it can be adjusted after placement. If a patient experiences discomfort or needs the balloon to provide more fullness, the volume of saline can be increased or decreased through an endoscopic adjustment. This adjustability may make the Spatz3 useful for patients who need customization during their treatment period. The Spatz3 typically remains in place for 12 months, which is longer than most other balloon options.

Medical facilities in Compton may not offer all of these options. Availability depends on the training and equipment at each facility, as well as insurance coverage and individual medical circumstances. When researching gastric balloon providers in the Compton area, asking which specific balloon systems they offer will help you understand what choices are available to you.

Practical Takeaway: Each gastric balloon type has different placement methods, inflation volumes, duration in the stomach, and adjustment capabilities. Gathering information about which balloon types are offered at facilities near you provides a foundation for discussing which option might work best for your specific needs and preferences.

How the Gastric Balloon Procedure Works

The gastric balloon placement procedure is an outpatient process, meaning patients typically go home the same day. The procedure begins with preparation similar to an upper digestive endoscopy. Patients are asked to fast for several hours before the appointment and may receive sedation to help them relax during the procedure. The specific type and level of sedation can vary depending on the facility and the patient's medical history.

During placement, the doctor inserts the endoscope—a thin, flexible tube with a camera—through the mouth and guides it down the esophagus into the stomach. The endoscope allows the doctor to see inside the stomach and ensure proper balloon positioning. For balloons like the Orbera and ReShape Duo, the deflated balloon is threaded through the endoscope and positioned in the stomach. Once properly placed, the balloon is filled with saline solution, typically over several minutes. The doctor monitors the filling process and may ask the patient how they are feeling to determine the appropriate volume.

For the Obalon system, the procedure differs because the balloons are swallowed rather than placed through an endoscope. A patient swallows a capsule containing a deflated balloon. Once the capsule reaches the stomach, confirmed by X-ray imaging, the doctor inflates the balloon through a thin catheter still attached to the capsule. The catheter is then gently removed, leaving the inflated balloon in the stomach. This process is repeated if multiple balloons are being placed.

After the balloon is placed and filled, patients may experience some discomfort, nausea, or cramping as their stomach adjusts to the presence of the balloon. These sensations typically decrease over several days to two weeks as the body adapts. Patients receive discharge instructions that often include dietary recommendations, medication to manage nausea, and guidance on when to contact their doctor if concerns arise.

Recovery time is generally brief compared to surgical weight loss procedures. Most patients can resume light activities within a day or two. However, returning to normal eating patterns is a gradual process. In the first few days, patients typically follow a liquid or soft food diet before gradually advancing to regular foods as tolerated.

Practical Takeaway: Understanding the step-by-step process of balloon placement—from fasting and sedation through inflation and adjustment—helps set realistic expectations about what to expect on the day of the procedure and in the immediate days following placement.

Diet and Lifestyle Changes During Gastric Balloon Treatment

The gastric balloon is not a treatment that works by itself. Success depends heavily on the dietary and behavioral changes a patient makes while the balloon is in place. The balloon creates a physical sensation of fullness that supports these behavior changes, but the patient must actively participate by choosing appropriate foods and portion sizes.

In the first few days after balloon placement, patients typically follow a clear liquid diet consisting of water, broth, and similar items. After this initial phase, patients usually progress to a soft food diet that might include foods like scrambled eggs, yogurt, pureed vegetables, and cooked proteins. Within one to two weeks, most patients can resume a regular diet, though in much smaller portions than before.

The goal during balloon treatment is to eat slowly and mindfully. Eating quickly can cause discomfort or vomiting because the balloon takes up stomach space. Patients learn to recognize the sensation of fullness and stop eating before overfilling the stomach. Typical meal portions during balloon treatment are much smaller than before—often around one cup of food per meal instead of two or three cups.

Hydration is important during gastric balloon treatment, but drinking large amounts of liquid with meals can cause discomfort. Patients are generally advised to drink most of their daily water between meals rather than during meals. This approach prevents the feeling of excessive fullness that can lead to nausea or vomiting.

Physical activity recommendations during balloon treatment are usually gradual. Patients are often advised to start with light
