Learn About Fitbit Models and Features

Overview of Fitbit Models and Their Evolution

Fitbit has been making fitness trackers and smartwatches since 2007, when the company first introduced wearable technology that could track daily steps and activity levels. Over the years, Fitbit has expanded its product line significantly, offering devices at various price points and with different features suited to different needs. The company was acquired by Google in 2021, which has led to continued development and integration with Google services. Understanding the different models available can help you learn about which device might match your fitness goals and lifestyle.

Fitbit's product lineup generally falls into several categories: basic fitness trackers, advanced fitness trackers with more sensors, smartwatches with full operating systems, and specialized devices. Basic models like the Fitbit Inspire and Charge lines focus on core fitness tracking features such as step counting, heart rate monitoring, and sleep tracking. These entry-level options tend to cost between $60 and $150. Mid-range options like the Fitbit Sense and Versa series add features such as built-in GPS, stress monitoring, and mobile payments. Premium smartwatches with Wear OS can cost $200 to $400 and include phone notifications, app support, and voice controls.

Each generation of Fitbit devices has typically introduced improvements such as longer battery life, more accurate sensors, larger or better-quality screens, or new health metrics. For example, Fitbit added blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) monitoring in 2015, stress management scores in 2018, and electrocardiogram (ECG) capability in 2019. The company releases updated versions of popular models roughly every two to three years. Tracking the differences between model generations can help you understand what improvements may justify purchasing a newer device or whether an older model meets your needs.

Practical takeaway: Research the specific Fitbit model year and generation before purchasing. A 2-year-old model might offer most features you need at a lower price, while the newest model may include additional sensors or health tracking capabilities worth the extra cost.

Core Fitness Tracking Features Across Fitbit Devices

All Fitbit devices track movement and activity at a fundamental level through accelerometers, which are sensors that detect motion. This allows Fitbit to count steps, calculate distance traveled, and estimate calories burned during daily activities. Most Fitbit models track activity in real time and display step counts on their screens. The accuracy of step counting has improved over generations, though all pedometer-based devices have some margin of error—typically within 5 to 10 percent when compared to manual counts.

Heart rate monitoring is a feature found on nearly all modern Fitbit devices, achieved through optical sensors on the back of the device that detect blood flow through your wrist. This continuous heart rate data allows Fitbit to calculate active heart rate zones during exercise, resting heart rate, and heart rate variability over time. Some research suggests that wrist-based optical heart rate monitors are accurate within 5 to 15 beats per minute compared to chest strap monitors, though accuracy can vary based on skin tone, wrist tattoos, and how snugly the device fits.

Sleep tracking is another widespread feature that uses movement patterns, heart rate changes, and other sensor data to estimate how much time you spend in light sleep, deep sleep, and REM sleep. Fitbit devices detect when you fall asleep by noticing when movement stops and when your heart rate drops. The devices generally provide a sleep score based on factors such as how much deep sleep you had, how many times you woke during the night, and how much time you spent in REM sleep. Sleep tracking does not require additional setup beyond wearing your device to bed.

Exercise recognition is a feature on many Fitbit models that automatically detects when you start certain activities like running, walking, or cycling. The device will pause and resume tracking, adjusting calorie estimates based on the specific activity type. Most Fitbit devices support between 15 and 40 exercise modes, depending on the model. You can also manually start a workout through the device menu to ensure accurate tracking of activities that the device might not automatically recognize.

Practical takeaway: Basic fitness tracking features like step counting and heart rate monitoring are consistent across most Fitbit models. If these core features meet your needs, you may not need to pay for a premium model. Consider your budget and decide whether added features like GPS or stress monitoring justify additional cost.

Advanced Health Monitoring and Wellness Features

Beyond basic fitness metrics, newer Fitbit models include advanced health monitoring tools that provide insights into your overall wellness. Blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) tracking measures the percentage of oxygen in your blood, which can indicate respiratory health and potential sleep apnea patterns. Fitbit devices that measure SpO2 use red and infrared light sensors to estimate oxygen levels, typically providing readings during sleep when changes are most noticeable. This feature is found on mid-range and higher models but requires you to wear your Fitbit consistently, including overnight.

Stress management scores and electrocardiogram (ECG) functionality represent some of Fitbit's most advanced health features. Stress scores use heart rate variability data to estimate your stress levels throughout the day, helping you identify when you are most stressed and when relaxation techniques might benefit you. The ECG feature, available on Fitbit Sense and similar premium models, can record a 30-second heart rhythm similar to what a single-lead electrocardiogram produces. This can help detect atrial fibrillation (AFib), an irregular heart rhythm that increases stroke risk. However, Fitbit ECG data is informational and should not replace clinical evaluation by a healthcare provider.

Women's health tracking features on many Fitbit devices allow you to log menstrual cycle information and symptoms. The device can then predict upcoming periods and fertile windows, and correlate cycle information with other metrics such as mood and sleep patterns. This data is stored privately on your device and in your Fitbit account. Temperature sensing, available on some premium models, tracks skin temperature variations that might indicate illness or hormonal changes.

Workout intensity and metrics have become more sophisticated on newer models. Real-time workout screens display different information depending on your exercise type, such as pace and distance for running, or power output for cycling when used with compatible devices. Some Fitbit models integrate with external sensors like Bluetooth-compatible scales or cycle computers to provide more detailed performance data. Post-workout summaries include information such as average heart rate, maximum heart rate achieved, and estimated calories burned during the specific exercise.

Practical takeaway: Advanced health features like ECG and SpO2 tracking are useful for monitoring trends over time, but these features are informational only. If you have concerns about irregular heart rhythms, low oxygen levels, or other health issues, consult a healthcare provider rather than relying solely on Fitbit data.

Connectivity, Display, and User Interface Differences

Fitbit devices vary significantly in their display technology and interface design. Basic trackers like the Inspire use small black-and-white screens that display limited information but consume minimal battery power, often lasting 5 to 7 days between charges. Mid-range models feature color screens, usually 1 to 1.5 inches in size, that make data more visually interesting and easier to read. Premium Fitbit smartwatches have larger screens similar in size to traditional watches, measuring 1.4 to 1.58 inches diagonally, with resolutions clear enough to read notifications and respond to messages.

Battery life differs dramatically between model types. Fitness trackers with smaller screens can operate for 5 to 10 days on a single charge, while color-screen models typically last 4 to 7 days. Smartwatches with larger displays and always-on screen options may last only 1 to 2 days before requiring a charge. Charging methods vary as well—some older models use proprietary magnetic chargers, while newer devices often use USB charging clips or standard USB-C connections. Understanding battery expectations helps you choose a device that fits your charging routine.

Smartphone connectivity is a key difference between basic trackers and smartwatches. All Fitbit devices sync with the Fitbit mobile app through Bluetooth, allowing you to view detailed information, set goals, and receive insights on your phone. Basic trackers provide notifications only for calls and texts when your phone is nearby. Mid-range models and smartwatches can display full notifications from any app installed on your phone, allowing you to see messages, social media alerts, and calendar reminders directly on your wrist.
