Learn About Finding Your SAT Test Scores

Understanding SAT Score Basics and What Your Scores Mean

The SAT is a standardized test that many colleges and universities use to review student applications. Your SAT score is a numerical representation of how you performed on the test across different subject areas. Understanding what your scores represent is the first step in locating and interpreting them.

The SAT is scored on a scale of 400 to 1600. This total score combines two main sections: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, and Math. Each section is scored from 200 to 800 points. Within the Reading and Writing section, you also receive a separate score that breaks down your performance on reading versus writing specifically. The Math section may include additional subscores depending on the version of the test you took.

Your SAT score report includes more than just your total number. It also shows you a percentile ranking, which indicates what percentage of test-takers scored at or below your score. For example, if you scored in the 75th percentile, that means 75% of people who took the test scored at or below your score. This context helps you understand how your performance compares to other students nationally.

Different versions of the SAT may have slightly different scoring structures. If you took the SAT before 2016, your score may have been on a different scale (2400 total instead of 1600). If you took the SAT in 2021 or later, you may have taken the digital version, which still uses the 1600 scale but has a slightly different format. Understanding which version you took matters because score comparisons across different versions are not straightforward.

Practical Takeaway: Before searching for your scores, think about when you took the SAT. This helps you understand which scoring scale applies to you and what your score means in context. Knowing the difference between your total score, section scores, and percentile ranking will help you interpret your results when you find them.

Official Sources for Locating Your SAT Scores Online

The College Board, the organization that administers the SAT, maintains official records of your test scores. The most direct way to view your scores is through your College Board account on their official website. This is the most reliable method because it comes directly from the source and ensures you are looking at your actual scores, not outdated or incorrect information.

To access your scores through the College Board website, you will need to create or log into your College Board account. You can visit www.collegeboard.org and look for the "Sign In" option. If you have already taken the SAT, you should have received information about creating an account during your test registration. Your account is typically connected to the email address you used when registering for the test.

Once logged in, you can navigate to your score reports. The College Board makes scores available on a rolling basis after test administration, typically within 2-3 weeks for the standard SAT dates. If you took the test on a weekend date, scores may be released sooner. The website will show you your score release date if your scores are not yet available.

You should see all of your SAT scores from every test you have taken listed in your account. This is helpful if you tested multiple times, as you can compare your performance across different test dates. Your account will show your total score, section scores, subscores, and percentile ranking for each test date.

You can also see your score information through the College Board's mobile app, which offers the same access as the website. Many students find the app convenient for checking their scores on their phone. The app requires the same login information as your College Board account.

Practical Takeaway: Set up or log into your College Board account today to familiarize yourself with how to access your scores. Bookmark the official College Board website so you can return to it reliably whenever you need to view your scores. Having your account set up in advance means you can check your scores as soon as they are released.

Understanding Your Score Report Components

When you locate your SAT scores, your score report contains several different pieces of information, each telling you something different about your performance. Learning what each component means will help you understand your results more fully.

Your total score is the sum of your Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score (200-800) and your Math score (200-800), giving you a total between 400 and 1600. This is the primary number that most colleges focus on when reviewing your application. However, colleges also look at your section scores separately because they want to understand your strengths and weaknesses across different skill areas.

The Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section score combines your performance on reading comprehension and grammar/writing questions. However, you will also receive separate subscores for Reading and for Writing and Language. These subscores range from 1-38 and show more specifically where your performance was strong or where you may want to improve. For example, you might score well on reading passages but have room for improvement on grammar questions, and these subscores would reflect that difference.

Your Math score includes your overall performance, but you will also see a breakdown by content area. The report shows how you performed on problems related to Heart of Algebra, Problem Solving and Data Analysis, and Passport to Advanced Math. These breakdowns, sometimes called cross-test scores, help you identify which mathematical concepts you understand well and which ones might need more focus if you take the test again.

The percentile ranking tells you how your score compares to all students who took the SAT. If you scored in the 85th percentile, for example, that means you scored as well as or better than 85% of students who took the test. This percentile is helpful because it shows you not just your number, but where you stand among your peers nationally.

You may also see a score range or confidence interval reported with your score. This range represents the typical variation in scores and acknowledges that if you took the test again, your score might be slightly different. The College Board calculates this based on measurement precision.

Practical Takeaway: When you receive your score report, review each component carefully. Look beyond your total score to understand your section breakdown. If you are considering retaking the test, the subscores show you which areas to focus on studying to potentially improve your overall performance.

Handling Multiple SAT Test Dates and Score Choice

Many students take the SAT more than once. If you fall into this category, your College Board account will show all of your scores from each test date you participated in. Understanding how multiple scores are handled and what options you have is important for your college application process.

When you take the SAT multiple times, colleges receive information about all of your test dates and scores. The College Board does not automatically hide or remove earlier scores just because you took the test again. This means that if you took the SAT three times, colleges will see all three of your scores unless you take specific action regarding score reporting.

Many colleges have adopted "Score Choice" policies, which allow students to decide which test scores to send to a particular college. With Score Choice, you can send only your highest scores, or you can send scores from specific test dates while excluding others. Not all colleges offer Score Choice, so it is important to check the specific testing policies for each school where you plan to apply. Some colleges require you to send all scores, while others are flexible.

If you are deciding whether to retake the SAT, viewing all of your previous scores in your College Board account can inform your decision. You can compare your performance across different test dates and identify whether your scores improved or stayed similar. This historical information helps you determine whether taking the test again might lead to meaningful improvement or whether your current scores represent your typical performance.

Your College Board account allows you to see the exact date you took each test, your scores from that date, and the time that has passed since you tested. If you took the SAT several years ago, your older scores may still be available in your account. Some colleges set time limits on how recent SAT scores should be, so checking the dates of your scores matters when planning your applications.

When you are ready to send your scores to colleges, you will use your College Board account to request official score reports. This process is separate from simply viewing your scores online. You pay a fee to send official reports directly from the College Board to each institution, and you can choose which scores to include at that time if the college offers Score Choice.

Practical Takeaway: If you have taken the SAT multiple times, log into your account and review all of your scores side by side
