Learn About Finding Your Blood Type in MyChart

Understanding Blood Type Basics and Why It Matters

Your blood type is determined by proteins and sugars on the surface of your red blood cells. There are four main blood types: A, B, AB, and O. Each type can also be positive or negative based on whether you have the Rh protein. This means there are eight possible blood type combinations: A positive, A negative, B positive, B negative, AB positive, AB negative, O positive, and O negative. According to the American Red Cross, O positive is the most common blood type in the United States, found in about 37% of the population, while AB negative is the rarest at only 1% of the population.

Blood type information has practical uses in medical settings. If you ever need a blood transfusion during surgery or due to an injury, doctors need to know your type immediately. Certain blood types are universal donors or universal recipients. O negative blood, for example, can be given to people with any blood type, making it incredibly valuable in emergency situations. AB positive blood can receive from any type, but can only be given to AB positive individuals. Knowing your blood type helps medical professionals provide the safest treatment options quickly.

Blood type can also influence some health considerations. For instance, people with O blood type have slightly different clotting factors than other types. Pregnant women with negative blood types need special attention to prevent complications in future pregnancies. Some research suggests blood type may relate to certain health conditions, though these connections are still being studied.

Practical takeaway: Understanding your blood type basics helps you comprehend why this information appears in your medical records and why it matters during medical care.

What MyChart Is and How It Stores Your Medical Information

MyChart is an online patient portal used by many healthcare systems across the United States to give patients access to their medical records. It is not a government program but rather a platform developed by Epic Systems, a major healthcare software company. Hospitals, clinics, and medical practices use MyChart to allow patients to view test results, appointment information, medication lists, and other health data from their own computers or mobile devices.

When you receive care at a healthcare facility that uses MyChart, the medical staff enters information about your visit, tests, and treatments into their system. This information automatically becomes available to you through your MyChart account, typically within a few hours to a day after your visit or test. The blood type information that appears in MyChart comes from testing done at the facility or from information you've provided during registration that was entered into your medical record.

MyChart serves as a bridge between patients and their healthcare providers. Instead of calling your doctor's office to ask about test results, you can log in and view them yourself. You can also send messages to your care team through the portal, request prescription refills, and check upcoming appointments. The system is designed to make medical information more transparent and accessible to patients.

Security is built into MyChart. You must create a username and password to access your account, and the connection between your device and MyChart's servers is encrypted. This means your personal health information is protected and only you can view your own records unless you grant permission to others.

Practical takeaway: MyChart is a secure online tool where healthcare facilities store your medical information, including blood type results, and allow you to view this information from home.

Step-by-Step Process for Locating Your Blood Type in MyChart

To find your blood type in MyChart, start by logging into your account on the MyChart website or through the mobile app. You will need your username and password. If you don't have a MyChart account yet, you can create one by visiting your healthcare provider's website and following the registration instructions, which typically require identifying information like your date of birth and medical record number.

Once you are logged in, look for a section labeled "Health Records," "Results," "Lab Results," or "Medical Records" depending on your healthcare system's setup. Most MyChart versions have these options displayed in the main menu or navigation area. Click on this section to view your available records.

Within your health records, search for any blood type testing or screening results. Blood type information might appear under several names: "ABO Blood Type," "Blood Type and Rh," "Type and Screen," "Type and Cross," or "Transfusion Service Results." Some systems allow you to search by typing keywords. If your system has a search function, try typing "blood type" or "ABO."

If you cannot locate blood type results in the online portal, it may mean the test was never performed at that facility, or the information hasn't been entered into the system yet. You can contact your healthcare provider's office directly and ask them to provide your blood type information. They may have it on file even if it's not yet in the online system.

Different healthcare systems organize information slightly differently. Some show results in a timeline format with the most recent tests first. Others organize by test type or visit date. Taking a few minutes to explore the menu options will help you become familiar with your specific system's layout.

Practical takeaway: Use the Health Records or Lab Results section in MyChart, search for blood type terms, and contact your provider if the information is not visible online.

Understanding Your Blood Type Results and What They Mean

When you view your blood type result in MyChart, you will see a combination of letters and a plus or minus sign. For example, you might see "O positive," "B negative," or "AB positive." The letters represent your ABO type, which is determined by which antigens (proteins) you have on your red blood cells. The plus or minus represents your Rh factor, which is either present (positive) or absent (negative) on your cells.

The ABO system works this way: Type A means you have A antigens; Type B means you have B antigens; Type AB means you have both A and B antigens; and Type O means you have neither A nor B antigens. This might seem backward, but it's how the system was originally discovered and named. Your blood type is inherited from your parents. You receive one type gene from each parent, which determines your type.

The Rh factor is separate from ABO type. About 85% of people are Rh positive, meaning they have the Rh protein. About 15% are Rh negative, lacking this protein. If you are Rh negative and receive Rh positive blood without proper precautions, your body may develop antibodies that could cause problems in future transfusions or pregnancies. This is why Rh status matters in medical care.

Your blood type result might also include additional information like "Type and Screen" or "Type and Crossmatch." A Type and Screen test checks your blood type and looks for antibodies that might cause reactions with donor blood. A Crossmatch test goes further and actually tests your blood against specific donor blood units. These are done to ensure safe transfusions.

Some results may show other information like your blood bank number or additional antibody findings. If you see test results you don't understand, the information typically includes normal ranges or reference values that explain what the results mean.

Practical takeaway: Your blood type result shows your ABO type (A, B, AB, or O) and your Rh factor (positive or negative), which together make up your complete blood type.

Common Reasons Why Blood Type Information Might Be Missing or Different

You may log into MyChart and find that blood type information is not displayed, even though you believe you've had the test done. There are several common reasons this happens. First, blood type testing might not have been performed at the healthcare facility connected to your MyChart account. You may have been tested at a different hospital or clinic that uses a different system. Blood type information from outside facilities doesn't automatically transfer between healthcare systems.

Second, the blood type test may have been ordered but the results haven't been entered into MyChart yet. This is common when testing is done at an outside laboratory. Results sometimes take several days to appear in the online portal after the lab completes the test. If you had blood work done very recently, checking back in a day or two may show the results.

Third, blood type information might be stored in a paper chart or older computer system that hasn't been transferred to MyChart. This is particularly true if you received care at a facility before they switched to their current electronic system. In these cases, your provider's office can look up the information in their archives.

You might also see different blood type results in different places. For example, if you were tested
