Learn About Filing Weekly Unemployment Claims in West Virginia

Understanding West Virginia's Weekly Unemployment Claims Process

West Virginia's Department of Employment Programs (DEOP) manages unemployment insurance claims for workers who have lost jobs through no fault of their own. Each week, claimants must file a new claim form to continue receiving benefits. This weekly filing requirement is a core part of how the state's unemployment system works.

The weekly claims process in West Virginia differs from the initial claim you file when you first become unemployed. While your initial claim establishes whether you may have access to benefits, your weekly claim confirms that you remain unemployed and meet current requirements. The state processes thousands of weekly claims each month—in 2023, West Virginia averaged around 4,000 to 6,000 weekly claims filed.

Understanding this process helps you know what to expect and what information you'll need to prepare. The state requires certain information from you each week, and providing accurate details matters for the smooth processing of your claim. Your weekly filing serves as official documentation of your unemployment status during that particular week.

The filing window for weekly claims typically runs from Sunday through Friday of the following week, though specific dates depend on your claim week. This gives you several days to file, rather than a single deadline on one day. Filing early in the week can help avoid technical issues that sometimes occur as deadlines approach, since many people file on the same day.

Practical Takeaway: Mark your calendar with your regular filing day each week, even though you have several days available. This habit reduces the risk of accidentally missing your weekly claim, which could pause your benefits temporarily.

How to File Your Weekly Claim Online Through WVUI Online

West Virginia's primary method for filing weekly unemployment claims is through WVUI Online, the state's web-based portal. This system allows you to file from any computer or mobile device with internet access. To use WVUI Online, you'll need to create an account with a username and password if you haven't already done so during your initial claim filing.

The login page for WVUI Online is found on the West Virginia Department of Employment Programs website. Once you log in with your credentials, you'll see your claim information and the option to file your weekly claim. The system shows you which weeks are available for filing and indicates whether you've already filed for a particular week. The interface displays your claim balance—the total amount of benefits you may be able to draw—and the weekly benefit amount the state has determined for you.

When you file your weekly claim through WVUI Online, you'll answer questions about your work search activities, any part-time work you performed during that week, and your job search efforts. West Virginia requires claimants to conduct a certain level of work search activity each week as part of maintaining your claim. The questions ask you to report details about employers you contacted, job applications you submitted, and other job-seeking activities.

The filing process typically takes 10 to 15 minutes once you're logged in. You'll need to confirm your personal information, indicate whether you worked during the claim week, report any income you earned, and describe your work search activities. The system stores your responses and provides a confirmation number after you submit. Keep this confirmation number in case you need to reference your filing later.

Filing online through WVUI Online is faster than phone filing and provides an immediate confirmation of submission. The system is generally available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, though the state performs maintenance windows that may briefly take the system offline. Filing during business hours on Tuesday through Thursday usually offers the most stable access to the system.

Practical Takeaway: Save your confirmation number in a safe place, such as a notes app or document on your phone. This number proves you filed your claim for that week and can help resolve any disputes about whether you submitted on time.

Phone Filing and In-Person Alternatives for Weekly Claims

While online filing through WVUI Online is the state's preferred method, West Virginia still offers phone filing options for people who cannot access the internet or prefer to file by phone. You can call the West Virginia Department of Employment Programs at 1-800-827-3507 to file your weekly claim verbally with a representative. This line operates during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, typically from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Eastern Time.

Wait times for phone filing can be substantial, particularly early in the week and on Mondays when claim volumes spike. During the period from 2020 to 2022 when unemployment claims surged nationwide, wait times in West Virginia for unemployment phone lines sometimes exceeded 45 minutes. As of 2024, wait times have shortened considerably but can still reach 20 to 30 minutes during peak times. Calling on Wednesday or Thursday afternoons may reduce your wait time compared to calling on Monday or early Tuesday.

When you call to file, have your claim number and personal identification information ready. You'll speak with a representative who will ask you the same questions as the online system: whether you worked, what income you earned, and what work search activities you performed during that week. Provide accurate information, as the representative enters your responses into the same state system used for online filings.

In-person filing is also available at West Virginia Workforce offices located throughout the state. These one-stop career centers are located in most counties and allow you to file your weekly claim with assistance from a staff member if needed. You can find your nearest office through the state's workforce website. Office hours vary by location but typically are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Using in-person filing can be helpful if you have questions about the process, struggle with the online system, or need verification that you filed. However, you must travel to an office during their hours of operation, which may not be convenient for everyone. In-person filing is particularly useful if you're having technical problems with online filing and need immediate help resolving them.

Practical Takeaway: If you plan to use phone or in-person filing, start your attempt early in the week to avoid running out of time. Have your claim number, identification, and a list of your work search activities written down before you call or visit an office.

Information Required for Your Weekly Claim Filing

Each week when you file your claim, West Virginia asks you to report specific information. Knowing what information the state requires helps you prepare and file accurately. The primary categories of information include your work status, any earnings from work, and your work search activities.

You must report whether you worked during the claim week—this means work you performed for any employer, including part-time jobs, gig work, or self-employment. If you worked, you must report the gross amount you earned before taxes, the number of hours you worked, and the name of the employer. Even small amounts of income must be reported, as West Virginia reduces your weekly benefit amount by a portion of any wages you earned. The state allows you to earn up to a certain threshold before your benefits are reduced; for 2024, this threshold is approximately $56 per week, though this amount may be adjusted annually.

You must also report your work search activities. West Virginia requires that you conduct work search activities during each claim week unless you qualify for an exception (such as being on a temporary layoff expecting recall). Work search activities include submitting job applications, attending job interviews, contacting employers, posting your resume on job boards, attending job training or workshops, and consulting with employment counselors. You should be prepared to report at least two to three work search contacts per week, though the specific requirement depends on the details of your claim.

When reporting work search activities, write down specific details: the date you contacted the employer, the company name, the position you inquired about, and the method of contact (phone, email, online application, in-person). The state may verify these activities, and having specific details available helps you respond accurately if questions arise. Keep records of your job applications, emails, and contact attempts throughout the week so you can recall this information when filing.

You should also report if you've had any job interviews scheduled, if you've attended training programs, or if you've had any communication with potential employers. Anything related to your job search efforts counts as work search activity. The state wants to see that you're actively trying to return to work while receiving benefits.

Additionally, you must confirm your contact information, verify that there have been no changes in your personal circumstances, and answer questions about whether anything has changed regarding your claim since you filed the previous week. Changes you must report include a new phone number
