Learn About EBT Card Use on Amazon

Understanding SNAP Benefits and Amazon Partnership Basics

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as food stamps, provides monthly benefits to millions of Americans to help purchase food. As of 2024, approximately 42 million people receive SNAP benefits each month, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Amazon began accepting SNAP benefits—also called EBT (Electronic Benefits Transfer) cards—through its online platform in select states starting in 2019, expanding this option significantly over recent years.

An EBT card works like a debit card connected to your SNAP account. When you receive SNAP benefits, the funds load onto your EBT card monthly. Traditionally, people could only use these cards at physical grocery stores and farmers markets. Amazon's partnership expanded where people can shop, allowing online ordering and delivery or pickup of SNAP-eligible items without leaving home.

The key distinction is that not all Amazon products are available for purchase with EBT cards. Only food items that meet SNAP guidelines can be bought this way. This means you cannot purchase household supplies, vitamins, prepared foods, or alcohol using your EBT card on Amazon, even though these items may be listed on the site.

As of late 2023, Amazon accepted EBT in all 50 states, Washington D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. However, availability can vary by zip code within states, so your specific location matters. Amazon Prime membership is not required to use EBT on the platform, and you don't pay extra fees for this service.

Practical Takeaway: Before attempting to use your EBT card on Amazon, verify that the service works in your zip code by visiting Amazon's SNAP/EBT information page or checking during checkout. This saves time and prevents confusion when placing your first order.

What You Can and Cannot Buy with EBT on Amazon

SNAP benefits follow strict federal guidelines about what counts as food. Understanding these rules prevents checkout surprises and declined transactions. The general rule is simple: you can buy raw and uncooked foods intended for home preparation. You cannot buy prepared or hot foods, regardless of where you purchase them.

Items you can purchase with EBT on Amazon include:

• Fruits and vegetables (fresh, frozen, or canned)
• Grains and breads (rice, pasta, cereal, bread, tortillas)
• Meat, poultry, and fish (fresh or frozen)
• Dairy products (milk, cheese, yogurt, butter)
• Nuts, seeds, and legumes (peanut butter, beans, lentils)
• Snack foods without hot preparation labels (crackers, granola bars)
• Beverages (milk, 100% juice, water)
• Pantry staples (oil, spices, vinegar, baking supplies)

Items you cannot purchase include:

• Hot or prepared foods (rotisserie chicken, deli items, prepared salads)
• Alcoholic beverages or tobacco
• Vitamins and medicines
• Cosmetics and personal hygiene products
• Pet food
• Household cleaning supplies
• Paper products
• Non-food items of any kind
• Meals meant to be eaten immediately (pre-made sandwiches, hot pizzas)

One important detail: Amazon's search filters sometimes show "SNAP-eligible" labels on products, which helps identify acceptable items quickly. However, the responsibility to ensure purchases comply with SNAP rules remains with you. If you're unsure about a specific item, check its product description for mentions of preparation requirements or contact Amazon customer service before purchasing.

Practical Takeaway: Use Amazon's SNAP filter when shopping to see only eligible items, then double-check product descriptions before adding items to your cart. This approach prevents wasted time and denied transactions at checkout.

Step-by-Step Process for Using Your EBT Card on Amazon

Using your EBT card on Amazon requires a few setup steps, but the process is straightforward. First, you need an Amazon account. If you don't have one, create an account using your email address and a password. This is free and takes about five minutes. You don't need Amazon Prime to use EBT, though Prime membership offers additional benefits like faster shipping.

Next, you'll add your EBT card information to your Amazon account. Go to your account settings and look for "Payment Methods" or "Wallet." Select the option to add a payment method and choose "EBT Card." Amazon will ask for your 16-digit card number (found on the front of your EBT card), the expiration date, and the three-digit CVV security code on the back. Enter your billing zip code—this must match the address associated with your EBT account at your state's SNAP agency.

When you're ready to shop, browse for SNAP-eligible items using the search feature. You can filter results by clicking the "SNAP/EBT" filter option to show only approved products. Add items to your cart as you normally would on Amazon. Review your cart to ensure all items are SNAP-eligible, as mixed purchases (combining EBT-eligible and ineligible items) require two separate transactions.

At checkout, select your EBT card as the payment method. Amazon will deduct the purchase amount from your SNAP benefits balance. You can choose delivery to your home (where available) or pickup at an Amazon Hub or Whole Foods location. Delivery typically takes 1-2 business days, though this varies by location and current order volume. Keep your receipt for your records, just as you would with in-store purchases.

Practical Takeaway: Before your first purchase, verify that the address on file with your EBT account matches the billing address you provide Amazon. Address mismatches are the most common reason for transaction failures.

Troubleshooting Common Issues and Transaction Problems

Even with correct information, EBT transactions on Amazon sometimes encounter problems. Understanding common issues helps you resolve them quickly. The most frequent problem is an address mismatch. Your billing address on Amazon must exactly match the address your state's SNAP agency has on file for you. If you've moved recently, contact your local SNAP office to update your address before attempting to use your EBT card online.

Card decline errors occur for several reasons. Your EBT card may have insufficient funds—SNAP benefits load on the first of each month in most states, though some states use staggered schedules. Check your current balance by logging into your state's SNAP website or calling the customer service number on the back of your EBT card. The card itself may also be expired; EBT cards must be renewed periodically (usually every 5 years), and you cannot use an expired card for any purchases.

Sometimes your EBT card becomes temporarily frozen due to suspected fraud or security concerns. This is a protection measure. Call the number on the back of your card to verify transactions and unlock it. Have your Social Security number and other personal information ready when you call.

Technical issues with Amazon's system occasionally prevent EBT transactions. If your card has sufficient funds, the address matches, and the card isn't expired or frozen, try these steps: clear your web browser's cache and cookies, log out of Amazon completely, log back in, and retry the purchase. If the problem persists, contact Amazon customer service and mention you're using SNAP/EBT. They can investigate whether the issue is on Amazon's end or with your card.

Delivery problems may also arise. If your order doesn't arrive within the estimated timeframe, check your order status in your Amazon account. If items are damaged or incorrect when they arrive, report this to Amazon immediately for a refund or replacement. SNAP benefits that are refunded return to your EBT card account within 5-7 business days.

Practical Takeaway: Before contacting support, gather your order number, card information, and a list of any error messages you received. This information helps customer service representatives resolve your issue more quickly.
