Understanding Dental Implants: What They Are and How They Work

A dental implant is a replacement tooth made of three main parts: the implant itself, which is a small titanium screw placed into your jawbone; the abutment, which connects the implant to the visible tooth; and the crown, which is the part that looks like a natural tooth. The implant acts as a replacement root, providing a strong foundation for the artificial tooth above it.

Dental implants have been used successfully for decades. According to the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, approximately 3 million Americans currently have dental implants, and that number grows by about 500,000 each year. Implants are made from titanium because this metal has a unique ability to bond with bone tissue through a process called osseointegration. Over several months after placement, the bone grows around the implant, making it become a permanent part of your jaw.

The process of getting a dental implant typically takes several months from start to finish. First, a dentist or oral surgeon places the implant into the jawbone. Then you wait for three to six months while the bone heals and bonds with the implant. After healing is complete, your dentist places the abutment and crown on top. During this waiting period, you can wear a temporary tooth so you don't have a visible gap.

Unlike dentures, which rest on your gums and must be removed for cleaning, implants function much like natural teeth. You brush and floss them just as you would your natural teeth. They don't move around or make clicking sounds while you speak or eat. Many people report that implants feel completely natural and that they forget the tooth isn't real.

Practical takeaway: Understanding the basic structure and function of dental implants can help you decide whether this option might work for your situation. Learning how implants integrate with your bone helps explain why the process takes several months but results in a long-lasting solution.

Comparing Implants to Other Tooth Replacement Options

When you lose a tooth or need a tooth removed, several options are available. Dental implants are one choice, but they're not the only one. Understanding the differences can help you make an informed decision about what might work best for your needs and circumstances.

Dental bridges are one common alternative to implants. A bridge uses crowns on the teeth next to the gap to support a replacement tooth in the middle. Bridges typically cost less upfront than implants, ranging from $2,000 to $5,000, compared to $3,000 to $6,000 for a single implant. However, bridges require that healthy teeth next to the gap be shaped down and crowned, which means removing some of the natural tooth structure. Bridges typically last 5 to 15 years before needing replacement.

Dentures are another option, especially if you're missing several teeth or all your teeth. Complete dentures replace all upper or lower teeth, while partial dentures replace some teeth. Dentures are removable and generally cost less initially, ranging from $300 to $5,000 depending on the type. However, dentures require daily removal and cleaning, and they may shift or move while eating or speaking. Many people find dentures uncomfortable or feel self-conscious wearing them.

Implants offer advantages over these other options. Because they don't rely on neighboring teeth for support, implants don't require damaging healthy teeth. Implants are designed to last many years—often 20 years or more—with proper care. They function and feel more like natural teeth than bridges or dentures. However, implants do require healthy jawbone, and the process takes longer and costs more upfront. Implants also may not be recommended for people with certain health conditions or inadequate bone density.

A newer option called implant-supported dentures combines elements of both solutions. These are dentures that attach to implants, giving them better stability than traditional dentures while costing less than multiple individual implants. This option works well for people missing all their teeth who want something more secure than regular dentures but are concerned about cost.

Practical takeaway: Each tooth replacement option has pros and cons regarding cost, longevity, function, and maintenance. Your specific situation—how many teeth are missing, your budget, the condition of your remaining teeth, and your jawbone density—will influence which options might work for you.

The Dental Implant Process: From Evaluation to Completion

Getting a dental implant involves several stages over many months. Understanding this timeline can help you prepare mentally and practically for what to expect.

The process begins with a consultation and evaluation. During this visit, your dentist or oral surgeon examines your mouth, takes X-rays, and may order a CT scan to examine your jawbone in detail. This evaluation determines whether you have enough bone density to support an implant. If your jawbone is too thin or shallow in certain areas, bone grafting may be needed before implant placement. This additional procedure adds time and cost to the overall process. The dentist also reviews your medical and dental history to make sure implants are appropriate for you. This consultation is the time to ask questions and discuss your concerns.

Once the dentist determines that implants are a good option, implant placement surgery is scheduled. During this appointment, local anesthesia is applied, and the dentist or oral surgeon makes a small cut in your gum to expose the bone. A series of increasingly larger drills create a hole in the bone where the implant will sit. The titanium implant is then screwed into this hole, and the gum is stitched closed over it. This appointment typically lasts 30 minutes to two hours depending on complexity. You'll receive aftercare instructions, including what to eat, how to keep the area clean, and when to take prescribed antibiotics or pain relievers.

After implant placement, osseointegration begins. This is the biological process where bone grows around the implant and anchors it permanently. This phase typically lasts three to six months. During this time, the implant must remain undisturbed under the gum, so you cannot place pressure on it. You'll need to follow a soft diet and avoid chewing on that side of your mouth. Your dentist will schedule follow-up appointments to monitor healing. Some dentists place a temporary tooth or bridge during this phase so you don't have a visible gap, while others leave the area uncovered.

Once osseointegration is complete and your dentist confirms the implant has integrated with the bone, the next phase begins. An impression is taken of the implant position and your bite. This impression is used to create a custom crown that matches your natural teeth in color, shape, and size. Before the permanent crown is placed, your dentist may place a temporary crown to shape the gum tissue and ensure comfort. When everything fits correctly, the permanent crown is attached to the abutment. Once the crown is in place, you can resume normal eating and oral care habits.

Aftercare is important for long-term success. Brush twice daily with a soft toothbrush, floss daily using special floss or a water flosser, and visit your dentist every six months. Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol, as these can compromise implant healing and longevity. With proper care, dental implants can function for 20 years or more.

Practical takeaway: The dental implant process takes time—typically six to twelve months from start to finish—but breaks down into manageable stages. Understanding each stage helps you prepare for appointments, aftercare, and realistic timelines for when your new tooth will be fully functional.

Single implants are the most common type. These replace one missing tooth with an implant, abutment, and crown. Single implants work well whether the missing tooth is in the front or back of your mouth. Dentists throughout the Dormont area offer single implant placement and restoration.

Multiple implants can be used when several teeth in a row are missing. Instead of placing an implant for each tooth, dentists sometimes place implants strategically and connect multiple crowns to them. For example, if you're missing three teeth in a row, a dentist might place two implants and attach three crowns, with the middle crown brid
