Understanding Dental Implants: What They Are and How They Work

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots made from titanium that dentists place into your jawbone to support replacement teeth. Unlike dentures or bridges that sit on top of your gums, implants are surgically inserted directly into the bone beneath your gum line. This makes them function more like natural teeth because they have a solid foundation.

The implant itself is a small screw-like post that fuses with your jawbone over several months through a process called osseointegration. Once the implant has bonded with the bone, a dentist attaches an abutment—a connector piece—to the top of the implant. Finally, a crown (the visible tooth-like part) is placed onto the abutment. This three-part system creates a tooth replacement that can last 25 years or longer with proper care.

Dental implants differ from other tooth replacement options in important ways. Bridges require grinding down adjacent healthy teeth to support the artificial tooth, while dentures rest on your gums and can shift when you eat or speak. Implants preserve your natural teeth and jawbone structure because they don't require support from nearby teeth. They also feel more like natural teeth because they're anchored in your jaw rather than sitting loosely on your gums.

The success rate for dental implants is high, ranging from 90 to 95 percent according to dental research. However, success depends on several factors including your overall health, jawbone density, and how well you maintain the implant after placement. Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes, and poor oral hygiene can reduce the chances of successful implant integration.

Practical Takeaway: Before considering implants, understand that they are a long-term investment in tooth replacement that works differently from dentures or bridges. Implants require healthy jawbone and good overall health to succeed, so discussing your medical history with a dentist is an important first step.

Types of Dental Implants Available in Eugene

Eugene-area dental practices offer several implant options, each with different advantages depending on your specific situation. The most common type is the endosteal implant, which is placed directly into the jawbone. These implants are typically shaped like small screws and work well for most patients who have sufficient jawbone height and width. Endosteal implants support either a single crown, a bridge, or dentures depending on how many implants are placed.

Subperiosteal implants are an alternative for patients who don't have enough jawbone height for traditional implants. Instead of going into the bone, these implants sit on top of the jawbone under the gum tissue. A metal framework with posts extends through the gums to hold the replacement teeth. While less common than endosteal implants, subperiosteal implants can be useful when bone loss is significant and bone grafting isn't an option.

All-on-4 implants represent a newer approach that's gaining popularity in the Eugene area. This technique uses just four strategically placed implants to support an entire arch of replacement teeth—either upper or lower. The two front implants are placed straight up, while the back two are angled. This design works well for people who have lost most or all of their teeth and want a more permanent solution than traditional dentures.

Zygomatic implants are a specialized option that anchors into the cheekbone rather than the upper jawbone. These are used only in specific cases where a patient has severe upper jawbone loss and wants to avoid bone grafting. Very few dentists in Oregon perform this procedure, so you may need referral to a specialist.

Mini implants are smaller diameter implants sometimes used to support lower dentures or replace single teeth in areas with limited bone space. They cost less than standard implants but may not last as long and have somewhat lower success rates.

Practical Takeaway: Eugene dentists can discuss which implant type matches your bone structure and tooth loss pattern. Schedule a consultation to learn which options are realistic for your situation, as bone density and the number of teeth needing replacement determine which types will work.

The Dental Implant Process: Timeline and What to Expect

The dental implant process typically takes between 3 to 9 months from start to finish, though this varies based on whether you need bone grafting and other individual factors. Understanding the timeline helps you prepare mentally and physically for each stage.

The first stage is evaluation and planning. Your dentist will take X-rays and sometimes CT scans to measure your jawbone and plan implant placement. They'll review your medical history to ensure you're healthy enough for the procedure. If you have gum disease, the dentist will treat it first because implants cannot succeed in infected gums. This evaluation phase typically takes 1 to 2 weeks.

If your jawbone lacks sufficient height or width, you may need bone grafting before implant placement. Bone grafting involves adding bone material to build up the area where the implant will go. This material can come from your own bone (taken from another area of your jaw or body), a donor source, or synthetic bone substitute. After grafting, you'll typically wait 4 to 6 months for the new bone to fuse with your existing bone.

The surgical placement of the implant is the next step. Your dentist will make a small incision in your gum, create a space in the bone, and carefully insert the titanium implant. The procedure usually takes 30 to 60 minutes per implant. Most patients experience minimal pain during the surgery because of local anesthesia, though you may feel pressure. After placement, the implant is left to integrate with your bone for 3 to 6 months. During this time, you'll need to be careful with the area and follow specific care instructions.

Once the implant has fused with the bone, your dentist performs a second minor procedure to attach the abutment (the connector piece). This is less invasive than the initial surgery. After a brief healing period, the permanent crown is created and attached to the abutment. Your dentist takes impressions and works with a lab to create a crown that matches your natural teeth in color, shape, and size.

Throughout the process, you'll have multiple appointments for X-rays, impressions, and check-ups. The total cost reflects this complex timeline—implants are more expensive than some alternatives because they involve multiple procedures and highly specialized materials.

Practical Takeaway: Plan for a 6 to 9 month process when considering implants, and budget time off work for the surgical placement day. Ask your Eugene dentist for a detailed timeline specific to your situation, as bone grafting needs and other factors affect how long the process takes.

Costs and Payment Options for Dental Implants in Eugene

Dental implant costs in Eugene typically range from $3,000 to $6,000 per tooth for a single implant, crown, and abutment. This price variation depends on several factors including the dentist's experience, the complexity of your case, and whether bone grafting is needed. A full mouth of implants (multiple teeth or all-on-4 solutions) can cost $15,000 to $30,000 or more.

Most dental insurance plans do not cover implants because they're considered cosmetic or elective procedures. However, some insurance plans cover a portion of the crown restoration (the visible tooth part) if implants are necessary due to injury or disease rather than cosmetic preference. Your insurance company can provide specific information about what they cover. Medicare does not cover dental implants.

Many Eugene dental offices offer payment plans that allow you to spread implant costs over 12 to 24 months with little or no interest. Some offices use third-party financing companies that specialize in medical and dental procedures. These financing options typically require a credit check and monthly payments, but they make expensive procedures more manageable.

Dental schools in Oregon, including those at Oregon Health and Science University, sometimes offer implant services at reduced costs performed by dental students under faculty supervision. This approach takes longer but can lower your out-of-pocket expense significantly. You'd need to inquire directly with their dental school clinic about availability and their referral process.

Some Eugene dentists offer discounts for cash payment made upfront, which can save 5 to 10 percent of the total cost. If you're considering this option, get a detailed written estimate before proceeding. Understanding the full breakdown—surgeon fees
