Learn About Delta Baggage Fees and Costs

Understanding Delta's Basic Baggage Policy

Delta Air Lines has a baggage policy that varies based on your ticket type, frequent flyer status, and the route you're flying. Learning about these rules helps you understand what charges you might face when traveling. Unlike some airlines that charge for all checked bags, Delta includes one free checked bag for most passengers flying on paid tickets, though this depends on several factors.

The policy distinguishes between carry-on bags and checked bags. Most passengers can bring one carry-on bag and one personal item (like a purse or laptop bag) without paying extra fees. A carry-on bag typically measures up to 22 inches by 14 inches by 9 inches. Personal items must fit under the seat in front of you. These items don't count toward baggage fees because they stay with you during the flight.

For checked baggage, the first bag usually costs nothing if you have a qualifying ticket. The second checked bag typically costs between $35 and $45 for domestic flights, depending on whether you book in advance or pay at the airport. Third and subsequent bags cost more—often $100 or higher for the third bag on domestic flights. International flights may have different pricing structures.

Delta's policy also considers your ticket type. If you purchased a basic economy ticket—the lowest-cost option—you may not receive the same baggage allowance as someone with a standard or higher-tier ticket. Some discount tickets include no free checked bags, meaning your first bag would incur a fee. Checked bags also have weight limits, typically 50 pounds for domestic flights and 70 pounds for international flights, with size restrictions of 62 inches total dimensions (length plus width plus height).

Practical Takeaway: Review your specific ticket confirmation before packing. Look for text stating how many free checked bags your ticket includes, and note the weight and size limits for your bags. This prevents surprises at the airport.

How Frequent Flyer Status Affects Baggage Allowances

Delta's SkyMiles frequent flyer program provides baggage benefits that increase as you reach higher membership levels. The program has several tiers: Member, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Platinum Plus, Diamond, and Diamond Medallion. Each level offers different baggage perks that can reduce or eliminate fees for checked bags.

At the basic SkyMiles Member level, you receive standard baggage allowances based on your ticket type. However, once you reach Silver status, you gain an additional checked bag allowance. Silver members get a second checked bag free, meaning instead of paying $35-$45 for that bag, it costs nothing. To reach Silver status, you need to earn 25,000 SkyMiles in a calendar year or take 10 paid Delta flights.

Gold status members (50,000 SkyMiles or 25 flights annually) also receive two free checked bags and gain priority baggage handling. Platinum members (75,000 SkyMiles or 50 flights) receive these same benefits plus a third free checked bag. Moving to Platinum Plus (110,000 SkyMiles or 70 flights) maintains these benefits. Diamond and Diamond Medallion members (250,000 SkyMiles or 120 flights) enjoy all the baggage benefits plus additional perks like priority boarding and seat upgrades.

It's important to understand that these baggage benefits apply when you fly Delta or Delta partners. They typically extend to eligible companions on your booking as well, though rules vary. Delta credit card holders also receive benefits—the standard Delta SkyMiles credit card provides one free checked bag per flight, which stacks with airline status benefits.

The baggage benefits differ for tickets purchased through third parties or discount booking sites. If you booked through a travel aggregator or received a ticket from a tour operator, your baggage allowance may reflect the ticket type rather than your frequent flyer status.

Practical Takeaway: Log into your Delta account before booking to see your current status and baggage benefits. If you fly Delta frequently, tracking your progress toward the next status level helps you understand whether you'll gain baggage benefits before your next trip.

Baggage Fees for Different Ticket Types and Fare Classes

Delta offers several ticket types, and your baggage allowance depends heavily on which one you purchase. Understanding these differences can help you make informed decisions about your travel costs. The main categories are Basic Economy, Main Cabin, Comfort+, First Class Domestic, and International First Class.

Basic Economy tickets represent Delta's lowest-cost fares. Passengers on these tickets do not receive a free first checked bag—this bag incurs a fee starting at around $35 when purchased in advance through Delta.com or the Delta app, or $45 when purchased at the airport or ticket counter. A second checked bag would cost approximately $45 in advance or $50 at the airport. These fees apply per flight, so a round-trip means paying for each segment separately. Basic Economy tickets also typically don't include seat selection, priority boarding, or the ability to change flights without paying a change fee.

Main Cabin tickets include one free checked bag. The second checked bag costs roughly $35-$45 depending on purchase timing. Comfort+ seats include the same baggage allowance as Main Cabin but add benefits like extra legroom, priority boarding, complimentary drinks and snacks, and early boarding. First Class Domestic tickets provide two free checked bags, priority baggage handling, and additional amenities like hot meals and lie-flat seats on some aircraft.

International First Class tickets offer the most baggage allowance—typically two free checked bags that can weigh up to 70 pounds each. Some premium international tickets may allow additional bags or higher weight limits on specific routes. Business class tickets generally provide two free checked bags as well, making them comparable to First Class for baggage purposes.

The pricing structure for additional bags beyond your included allowance follows a consistent pattern: the third checked bag costs around $100 domestically, and the fourth and subsequent bags cost $100 each. Oversized bags (measuring more than 62 inches but less than 80 inches) incur an oversized fee of approximately $100 per bag. Items exceeding 80 inches or weighing more than 100 pounds may not be accepted as checked baggage at all.

Practical Takeaway: When comparing ticket prices, add potential baggage fees to the base fare. A seemingly cheaper Basic Economy ticket might cost more overall if you need to check bags. Calculate your total travel cost before booking.

Special Items and Additional Baggage Fees

Beyond standard suitcases and duffel bags, Delta passengers often travel with special items that have their own fee structures. Understanding these categories prevents unexpected charges at the airport. Items like sporting equipment, musical instruments, and oversized luggage may incur separate fees beyond your standard baggage allowance.

Sporting equipment has specific rules depending on the item. A single set of golf clubs typically counts as one checked bag and doesn't incur an additional fee if you're within your baggage allowance—however, if you've already checked your maximum number of bags, the golf clubs would count as an extra bag subject to the standard overage fee. Skis and snowboards are treated similarly: one pair counts as a checked bag, and additional pairs or sets count as extra bags with associated fees. Bicycles may incur a special fee of around $20-$30 per flight, and many must be packed in a bicycle-specific travel case or box.

Musical instruments receive special consideration under Department of Transportation rules. According to these regulations, airlines must allow full-size instruments as carry-on baggage if they fit in the overhead bin or under the seat, in addition to your regular carry-on allowance. Smaller instruments generally fit in standard overhead space. However, if your instrument is too large for overhead storage, it may need to be checked. When checked, full-size instruments (violins, cellos, guitars) typically don't incur additional fees beyond your baggage allowance, but airline policies recommend contacting Delta directly to arrange safe handling and confirm whether your specific instrument requires special treatment.

Other special items have varying policies. Pet carriers count toward your baggage allowance and require a pet fee of approximately $125 per pet per flight domestically (often higher for international flights). Strollers and car seats for infants and children are typically checked free of charge and don't count against your baggage allowance. Wheelchairs and mobility devices are transported without charge. Some items like firearms require advance notice and compliance
