Learn About Credit Cards With Bad Credit

Understanding Credit Cards and Credit Scores

A credit card is a financial tool that allows you to borrow money from a credit card company to make purchases. When you use a credit card, you're essentially taking out a short-term loan that you agree to pay back. The credit card company charges you interest on the balance you don't pay back in full, usually calculated as an Annual Percentage Rate (APR). Your credit score is a three-digit number that ranges from 300 to 850, and it represents your creditworthiness—essentially how reliable lenders think you are at repaying borrowed money.

Your credit score is determined by five main factors. Payment history accounts for 35% of your score and shows whether you've paid your bills on time. The amount of debt you currently owe, called credit utilization, makes up 30% of your score. The length of your credit history comprises 15%, newer accounts hurt this category. The types of credit you use (credit cards, loans, mortgages) account for 10%, and hard inquiries from recent credit applications make up the remaining 10%. According to Experian data from 2023, the average American credit score is around 716, which falls into the "good" range.

Bad credit typically refers to scores below 620, though some lenders define it as scores below 580. People develop bad credit through missed or late payments, high credit card balances, defaulting on loans, or filing for bankruptcy. About 16% of Americans have credit scores below 620, according to recent consumer credit data. The consequences of bad credit include higher interest rates on borrowing, difficulty renting apartments, potential job application rejections in certain fields, and trouble obtaining insurance at standard rates.

Practical takeaway: Before exploring credit card options, understand your actual credit score by checking your credit report from AnnualCreditReport.com, the government-authorized site where you can obtain free reports from the three major bureaus (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion) once per year.

How Bad Credit Affects Credit Card Options

When you have bad credit, traditional credit card companies view you as a higher-risk borrower because your history suggests you may have difficulty repaying what you borrow. This risk assessment translates into direct consequences for the terms you're offered. Credit card companies protect themselves by charging higher interest rates to borrowers with bad credit. While someone with excellent credit might receive a card with a 12% APR, someone with bad credit might face rates of 24% to 36% or even higher. This means if you carry a $1,000 balance on a card with a 30% APR and pay $50 monthly, you'll take approximately 35 months to pay it off and pay roughly $750 in interest alone.

Beyond interest rates, bad credit limits your card options significantly. Major card issuers like Chase, American Express, and Citi typically don't offer cards to people with scores below 650 to 700. This forces people with bad credit to seek alternatives: secured credit cards, subprime credit cards from specialized lenders, or store-branded credit cards with more lenient requirements. Many bad credit cards come with annual fees ranging from $25 to $99, plus additional fees for late payments, foreign transactions, or exceeding credit limits. Some cards charge penalty APRs that spike even higher if you miss a payment.

Rewards programs are another area where bad credit limits your options. People with good or excellent credit receive cards offering cash back, travel points, or sign-up bonuses. Bad credit cardholders rarely receive these perks because issuers assume higher default risk. Research by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau in 2022 found that consumers with bad credit pay an average of 10% to 15% more annually in credit costs compared to those with good credit, factoring in higher interest rates and additional fees.

Practical takeaway: Compare the actual costs of different cards by calculating the total interest and fees you'd pay over a year, not just looking at the APR alone. A card with a higher APR but no annual fee might cost less than a card with a lower rate but a significant yearly charge.

Types of Credit Cards Available for Bad Credit

Secured credit cards represent the most common option for people with bad credit who want to rebuild their credit history. With a secured card, you deposit money into a savings account held by the card issuer—typically between $200 and $2,500—and this deposit becomes your credit limit. You use the card like a regular credit card, making purchases and paying bills monthly. The deposit isn't used to pay your bill; instead, the card issuer reports your payment activity to the credit bureaus, helping you build a positive payment history. Capital One, Discover, and Bank of America all offer secured cards. After demonstrating responsible use (typically 6 to 18 months of on-time payments), you can graduate to an unsecured card, and your deposit is returned.

Subprime credit cards, sometimes called "bad credit" cards, are unsecured cards specifically designed for people with poor credit histories. Unlike secured cards, these don't require a deposit. However, they come with steep costs: APRs often exceed 24%, annual fees range from $50 to $95, and they frequently include program fees for credit counseling services (often $15 to $25 monthly). Companies like Milestone, CreditOne, and Surge Card offer subprime products. While these cards help people access credit immediately, the high costs make them expensive for building credit compared to secured alternatives.

Retail store credit cards sometimes approve applicants with bad credit because they're tied to a specific store and the issuer has direct control over the merchandise if payments aren't made. These cards typically have APRs between 20% and 30% and often include promotional financing offers (0% APR for 6 to 12 months on store purchases). Target, Home Depot, and Best Buy store cards have historically approved applicants with lower credit scores. Authorized user status is another option—becoming an authorized user on someone else's established credit card account allows their positive payment history to appear on your credit report, potentially improving your score without requiring your own card.

Practical takeaway: A secured card is generally the most cost-effective option for bad credit because it typically has lower fees than subprime cards and helps you build credit faster. Choose one with no annual fee or the lowest possible fee.

Steps to Improve Your Credit While Using a Bad Credit Card

Using a bad credit card strategically can actually improve your credit score if you follow specific practices. The most important action is making every payment on time, ideally before the due date. Payment history comprises 35% of your credit score, so even one late payment can reduce your score by 100 points or more. Set up automatic payments for at least the minimum amount due to prevent accidental lateness. When you make on-time payments consistently, credit bureaus report this positive behavior to other lenders, gradually rebuilding trust in your creditworthiness. After 6 to 12 months of perfect payment history, many people see their scores improve by 50 to 100 points.

Keep your credit utilization—the percentage of your available credit that you're actually using—as low as possible. Credit utilization accounts for 30% of your score. If your card has a $500 limit, try to keep your balance below $150 (30% utilization). This shows lenders you can manage credit responsibly without depending entirely on borrowed money. For a secured card with a deposit of $500, try to spend no more than $150 monthly and pay it off completely each month if possible. Using your card for small, regular purchases and paying them off quickly demonstrates responsible use without accumulating debt.

Don't close old accounts after you upgrade to better cards, and avoid opening multiple new cards quickly. The length of your credit history and the number of recent inquiries both impact your score. Each new credit application triggers a hard inquiry, reducing your score by a few points. Spacing out applications by at least three to six months minimizes damage. Additionally, having older accounts on your report helps your credit history length; closing accounts removes this positive element from your profile. If you graduate from a secured card to an unsecured card, keep the secured card open to maintain your credit history length.

Practical takeaway: Create a simple system to track due dates—use phone calendar reminders, automatic payments, or a written calendar—to ensure you never miss a payment. One late payment can erase months of credit-building progress.
