Understanding Masks and Their Purpose in DaVinci Resolve 20

Masks in DaVinci Resolve 20 are tools that let you isolate specific areas of your video or image. Rather than applying effects to your entire clip, masks allow you to create boundaries around particular regions. This means you can adjust color, add effects, or make corrections to just one part of your footage while leaving the rest untouched.

Think of a mask like a stencil. When you place a stencil on paper and spray paint, only the uncovered areas get paint. Similarly, a mask in DaVinci Resolve determines which portions of your video receive an effect and which portions remain unaffected. This selective approach gives you tremendous control over your editing.

Masks become especially useful in several real-world scenarios. If you're working with a music video and want to brighten only the singer's face while keeping the background darker, a mask lets you do that. If you have a shot where one person's skin tone needs correction but another person's doesn't, masks solve that problem. Professional colorists use masks constantly to ensure that color grading looks natural and targeted.

DaVinci Resolve 20 offers multiple mask types, each with different strengths. The software provides circular masks, rectangular masks, polygon masks, and even brush-based masks that you draw freehand. Some masks remain static throughout your clip, while others can move and change shape across frames—this is called keyframing a mask.

Understanding when and why to use masks separates amateur editing from professional work. Masks let you create sophisticated looks that would be impossible to achieve otherwise. Learning this skill opens up creative possibilities in color correction, visual effects, and overall video enhancement.

Practical Takeaway: Before diving into mask creation, spend time thinking about what part of your footage needs special attention. Ask yourself: Is there a specific region that needs color correction, effects, or adjustments? If yes, a mask is likely the solution you need.

Accessing the Masking Tools in the Color Page

To work with masks in DaVinci Resolve 20, you'll need to navigate to the Color page. This is where most masking happens, though masks also exist in other areas of the software. Start by clicking the "Color" tab at the bottom of your screen. This takes you to the color correction workspace, which is the primary location for mask creation and adjustment.

Once you're on the Color page, look at the interface. On the right side of your screen, you'll see the "Masks" panel. This panel is your command center for all mask-related functions. If you don't see it immediately, you can open it by going to the menu bar and selecting View, then ensuring Masks is checked. The Masks panel displays all masks associated with your current clip, and it's where you create new ones.

At the top of the Masks panel, you'll notice several buttons that represent different mask types. These include a circle icon (for circular masks), a rectangle icon (for rectangular masks), a polygon icon (for free-form polygon masks), and a brush icon (for painting masks by hand). Each button has a small dropdown arrow next to it, revealing additional options specific to that mask type.

To create your first mask, click one of these buttons. For example, clicking the circle button adds a circular mask to your clip. A circular mask appears on your video preview in the center viewer. This mask comes with default settings—a circle in the middle of your frame with a specific size and feather amount. You can then modify this mask to suit your needs.

The Masks panel also shows you detailed information about each mask you create. You'll see options for adjusting the mask's position, size, rotation, and softness (called feathering). If you create multiple masks, they all appear listed in this panel, letting you toggle them on and off individually or edit them one at a time.

Practical Takeaway: Spend a few minutes exploring the Color page and Masks panel in an empty project. Create a circular mask just to see how it appears. Familiarize yourself with where the buttons are and what the panel shows. This exploration builds your confidence before working on actual footage.

Creating and Shaping Different Mask Types

DaVinci Resolve 20 provides several mask shapes, each suited to different situations. Understanding the strengths of each type helps you choose the right tool for your task. The circular mask works best when you need to isolate a roughly round area, like someone's face or a lamp in the corner of a shot. The rectangular mask handles subjects with straight edges, such as a window, sign, or wall.

To create a circular mask, click the circle button in the Masks panel. A circle appears on your video. You can resize it by dragging the edge handles, move it by clicking and dragging the center, and rotate it if needed by using the rotation handle. The circle mask also features a "feather" slider, which softens the edge of the mask. A higher feather value creates a gradual transition between the masked and unmasked areas, producing more natural-looking results.

Rectangular masks work similarly to circular masks but have four corner handles instead of one. You can stretch the rectangle horizontally or vertically to match rectangular objects in your scene. Rectangles are especially useful for isolating a person's torso, a window in a building, or any rectangular area that needs separate color treatment.

For more complex shapes, the polygon mask lets you create custom outlines by clicking to add points. If you want to isolate someone's head from their shoulders, you could use a polygon mask to carefully trace around their head. This requires more precision and takes longer than circular or rectangular masks, but it offers flexibility for irregular shapes. You add points by clicking, and you can adjust each point's position after creation.

The brush mask gives you complete freedom. Instead of defining a shape mathematically, you paint directly onto your video preview to indicate which areas the mask should cover. This is useful when you need to select areas with complex boundaries, like hair or foliage, that don't fit neat geometric shapes. You paint with white (which includes that area in the mask) and black (which excludes it), with gray values creating soft transitions.

Once you create any mask, you can modify its properties through the Masks panel. You'll find sliders for position (X and Y coordinates), size, rotation, and most importantly, feather amount. Feathering is crucial because harsh mask edges look artificial in video. A properly feathered mask blends smoothly with the surrounding footage.

Practical Takeaway: Try creating each mask type on a sample video clip, even if you don't apply any effects yet. Get comfortable with resizing, moving, and feathering each one. This muscle memory makes you faster when you're working under time pressure on real projects.

Applying Effects and Corrections Within Masked Areas

After you create a mask, you can apply color corrections and effects only within that masked region. This is where masks become powerful tools for professional editing. In DaVinci Resolve 20, once you have a mask selected, any adjustments you make to color, brightness, saturation, or other properties apply exclusively within the masked area.

The workflow is straightforward: create your mask, then adjust the controls in the color correction panels. If your mask is active (selected), you'll notice a small indicator showing that you're making corrections inside a mask. The color wheels, curves, lift-gamma-gain sliders, and all other color correction tools function normally, but their effects appear only where your mask covers the video.

Here's a practical example: You're editing a scene where someone's face appears too pale compared to the rest of their body. You create a circular mask around their face, then use the color correction tools to warm up and brighten just that area. The rest of the frame remains unchanged. Without the mask, any brightening adjustment would affect the entire frame uniformly.

Another common use involves skin tone correction. Actors' faces sometimes have blemishes, uneven coloration, or lighting issues that need targeted fixes. Rather than correcting the entire image and potentially affecting background elements, you create a mask around the face and make corrections there. This precision prevents your adjustments from looking artificial or creating unexpected color shifts in other parts of the frame.

You can also stack multiple masks in a single clip. For example, you might create one mask around a person's face to adjust skin tone, another mask around their clothing to adjust color saturation, and a
