Learn About Creating a Legacy Plan With Your Values

Understanding What a Legacy Plan Is

A legacy plan is a set of decisions and documents that communicate your values, wishes, and intentions to your family and loved ones. Unlike a will, which focuses on distributing property and assets, a legacy plan encompasses the bigger picture of who you are, what matters to you, and what you want to be remembered for. This guide explores how to create a legacy plan that reflects your personal values and life philosophy.

The concept of legacy planning has grown significantly over the past two decades. According to research from the American Academy of Estate Planners & Council, approximately 60% of Americans do not have a will or any formal estate plan in place. Even fewer have documented their personal values and life lessons. A legacy plan fills this gap by creating a comprehensive record of your beliefs, experiences, and the principles that have guided your life.

Your legacy plan might include several components: a personal mission statement, letters to family members, instructions about your values on topics like education or charitable giving, stories from your life that illustrate what matters to you, and guidance about how you want to be remembered. Some people also include information about their wishes for family traditions, spiritual beliefs, or causes they care about.

The timing of creating a legacy plan matters. While it's often associated with later stages of life, people of all ages can benefit from documenting their values. A 35-year-old parent might create a legacy plan to guide decisions about their children's upbringing. A 60-year-old entrepreneur might document the principles that built their business. A 70-year-old might reflect on a lifetime of experiences and lessons learned.

Practical Takeaway: Begin by defining what legacy means to you personally. Is it about passing down family stories? Teaching your children about money? Supporting causes you believe in? Your answer will shape everything that follows in your planning process.

Identifying and Clarifying Your Core Values

Before you can create a meaningful legacy plan, you need to identify what your core values actually are. Core values are the principles and beliefs that guide your decisions and actions. They answer questions like: What do I believe is right? What brings me fulfillment? What do I want to stand for? This process of identification is personal and requires honest reflection.

Many people operate from values without ever naming them explicitly. A study from the University of Rochester found that when people take time to articulate their values, they experience greater life satisfaction and make more consistent decisions aligned with what matters to them. The process of writing down your values creates clarity that benefits not just your legacy plan, but your daily life.

To identify your values, consider these questions: What activities make you lose track of time because you're so engaged? What accomplishments are you most proud of? When do you feel most like yourself? What causes or issues make you want to take action? What would you want said about you at your funeral? What lessons do you most want to teach your children or grandchildren? Your answers point toward your actual values, not the values you think you should have.

Common values include family, integrity, learning, creativity, adventure, compassion, independence, tradition, justice, spirituality, health, and contribution. However, your values may be unique combinations or may include values not on any standard list. For example, you might value "creative problem-solving" or "quiet reflection" or "bringing joy through humor." The specificity matters because it helps you communicate what actually drives you.

A practical exercise involves listing 10 to 15 values that resonate with you, then narrowing that list to your top 5 or 6. This narrowing process forces you to prioritize. You might realize that while you care about adventure, learning ranks higher. Or that while you value tradition, you value growth even more. This hierarchy helps you understand yourself better and communicate what's most important in your legacy plan.

Practical Takeaway: Write a personal values statement of 100 to 200 words that describes your core beliefs. This statement becomes the foundation for everything in your legacy plan. Review it periodically and adjust as your understanding of yourself deepens.

Documenting Your Life Story and Key Experiences

A powerful part of legacy planning involves documenting the experiences and stories that have shaped who you are. These stories make your values tangible and memorable for the people who come after you. When your grandchildren read the story of how you overcame a challenge or made a difficult decision, they understand not just what you value but why you value it.

Research from the StoryCorps project, which has conducted over 20,000 recorded conversations, shows that family members treasure stories about their relatives far more than they treasure material possessions. When families know the stories behind decisions and choices, they feel more connected to their heritage and better understand their own identity. According to data from Duke University's Center for Cognitive Neuroscience, people remember stories 22 times more effectively than facts alone.

You might document stories about: a person who influenced you and why, a time you failed and what you learned, a significant decision and what guided your choice, a moment you felt proud of yourself, something you wish you had done differently, how you met your spouse or partner, what parenting or mentoring taught you, a professional or creative achievement, how you overcame fear, or what you learned about money and work. The stories don't need to be dramatic. Ordinary stories about ordinary decisions often contain the most valuable lessons.

The format for documenting these stories can vary. You might write them out in narrative form, record yourself speaking them, or create a combination of both. Some families prefer a structured format where each story answers specific questions: What was the situation? What choice did I face? What did I decide and why? What was the result? What would I want my children to know about this experience? Other families prefer free-form storytelling that feels more natural and personal.

As you document stories, include details that bring them to life. Instead of writing "I learned the importance of hard work," write about the specific job, the specific challenge, who helped you, what kept you going, and how you felt when you succeeded. Details make stories memorable and make your values real to people who might otherwise only read them as abstract concepts.

Practical Takeaway: Identify three to five stories from your life that illustrate each of your core values. Write or record these stories this month. If you have children or grandchildren old enough to understand, consider asking them which stories they'd most like to hear in depth.

Creating Written Guidance for Important Life Decisions

Beyond telling stories, a legacy plan can include written guidance about how you want important values to influence decisions in your family. This guidance helps your heirs understand your thinking when they face decisions after you're gone. For example, you might provide guidance about education, finances, charitable giving, career choices, family relationships, or spiritual matters. This is guidance, not commands—you're sharing your perspective while respecting that others will make their own choices.

Financial values are one common area where guidance proves helpful. You might document your beliefs about spending versus saving, investing for the future, helping family members financially, or supporting causes. A study from the Journal of Financial Planning found that families who discuss financial values experience better outcomes with inherited wealth and stronger financial relationships across generations. Your written guidance about money can address questions like: When is it appropriate to spend on experiences versus accumulating possessions? What do you believe about debt? How do you approach risk? What role should money play in life decisions?

Family relationships are another important area. You might provide guidance about: how you hope your children will relate to each other after you're gone, how you handled conflict and what you learned, your beliefs about forgiveness and reconciliation, how you balanced independence with family connection, or what you learned about marriage or partnership. This guidance doesn't dictate outcomes but shares the wisdom you've gathered.

Educational and career values matter to many people. You might write about: whether you believe college is necessary, your perspective on choosing work you love versus work that pays well, how you handled career changes, what you learned from failures in work, or what you wish you'd known about developing skills and talents. Parents often find this guidance particularly valuable for teenage children who are making early career and educational decisions.

For some people, spiritual or ethical values form the center of their guidance. You might address questions about: what you believe happens after death, practices or traditions you want continued, causes that matter to you, how to treat people from different backgrounds, or how to maintain integrity under pressure. This guidance helps people understand the spiritual or ethical lens through which you made decisions.
